Rode with a few other couples Sat to J & P Cycle's open house in Anamosa. About 50 miles into the ride we were going around a bend in the road and all we both saw was brown hair and then bang, bang, bang....The deer had to have made one leap from the other side of the ditch right into the left side of our fairing. All I can say is my husband is one heck of a good driver. We skidded into the other lane, onto the gravel shoulder the whole bike is swerving and he held onto it. I can't believe we didn't hit the ditch or lay the bike down. Cut in the front tire from the fender bending down, headlights sitting crooked and a few more dings. We're hoping the forks are ok.I don't think he was going over 45 mph when it happened. I can't belive how lucky we were. Kept on going down to the open house, but between the crowd down there, high winds and rain the whole way home...It was one of those days when we should have just hung it up for the day. No one hurt except his ankle which he drug on the road. A few Harley Riders from our hometown heard about it and everyone of them told Gary."It's lucky you had the Venture...cuz if it would have been an HD it would have never held up to that kind of force hitting it" Hope that's the first and last time we ever hit a deer!

You bet... Needles Highway /must do Iron Mountain Road/must do Spearfish Canyon/must do Town of Nemo ...All three roads that lead into a little town called Nemo. There is a little bar there that is fun! It's the only one in town so you can't miss it. It's really a pretty drive and off the beaten path. Did the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop and well worth it. Saw 300-400 buffalo within 10 feet of us. Sturgis Hwy 16 and 16a You need to stop at Sylvan Lake and walk around it. Of course Mt Rushmore, Pactola Lake, Deadwood, Keystone and Hill City. One thing we didn't do but should have,...take the "Badlands Loop" It takes about an hour to ride it and it's worth it. Once you get out there, every stop has a great map that has the whole area enlarged. It's well worth picking one up. If your staying a night or 2 we stayed at Mystic Hills campgrounds and cabins about 10 miles soth of Deadwood. They are reasonable, built in 06 and of the main highway tucked in the woods. www.mystichillscampground.com We were out there 5 or 6 days and had a blast!

Just got back ourselves from the same trip. We had to have been meeting each other on the road as Spearfish Canyon was closed for 3 days and we did the same as you. Running it and turning around going back the same way!

Just wanted to let you know the we made it home safe!! Put on 2011 miles (which I know is just a short run for some of you!) through the Black Hills and just want to say thanks for all the input on the different roads to take! It was beautiful!! The best part of the trip was when each one of our boys came and told us it was the "best trip they've ever had"! No cells, no tv's and no crowds. It's the perfect time of year to go out there! Hubby had a lot of lookers & questions on his new carrier he built! It worked great! Trying to catch up on the forums and just wanted to say it's been fun catching up on all the humor you clowns throw at each other!!

Thanks everyone! Mini, it was fun seeing pix of Don's MD and to put a face to a name!! Keep our boys in your prayers as it's a little nerve wracking making sure they ride safe! You never get over "worrying" about them no matter how old they get!

Looking for a littel help for my brand new rider wife of mine..

Virago is the way to go! I ride an 1100 and I love it. I'm 5'3 but I have no problem handling it and it keeps up with all the big bikes. It sits low to the ground, and I have no problems reaching anything on it. I don't know the weight of it, but it's light enough for me to handle. Plus you can get an older one reasonably priced. -
Finally take off with our son's on a 10 day ride out to Black Hills and Wyoming. Any place we've missed that we really should ride? Spearfish Canyon Needles Hiway Vanocker Canyon Norbeck Hiway Iron Mountain Rd Nemo Rd Mt Rushmore Devils Tower 16 & 16A We also plan to spend a day in the Little Big Horns. Appreciate any input and suggestions would be appreciated!

Same thing happened to us the first night we bought the Venture. If you have a thin helmet cover it will keep it from scratching any more.

Just wanted to say thanks for the replies! It's been fun to read about the event this weekend! Wish it would have worked for us! I'd say "Stay out of trouble" but by the sounds of it.....!! Anyway...ride safe!

Last night on the way home from work...I got to thinking about the women here....I thought all of you had met each other at rallies, etc, and never realized till now that some of you had never met each other. Hoping to get to know some of you a little better as not many women around our area have the same interest in riding as I do. We don't have internet at home so the only time I check the site is during the day. We just bought our Venture a couple of months ago and the hubby has all these tech questions he wants me to find out on the site. It's been a wealth of info for him. I was wondering if any women were planning on going to Pork in the Pines? It would be fun to meet in person!

Hubby asked if I would jump on the website (we don't have internet at home) and find out from you guys if wiring from the Venture (tail lights and blinkers)to a new carrier he's made that sits behind the bike is easy or if he needs to do anything special. I'm not sure what thread I'm looking for about wiring. He's planning on doing it tonight so any help would be appreciated!

So I took all of your advice on the IKEA sheepskin. Can't wait to try it out as we leave for 10 days to South Dakota next week! The only color they have is white, which both of our bikes are black. Has anyone ever tried dying these? Also, can you cut them? The one I got is pretty big, and I would like to cut it in half. One for my passenger seat on the Venture and one for my Virago. Thanks for any advice!

Well, here in Iowa where we've got 9 months of winter, gray skies, and it gets dark at 4:30 pm....once summer hits, the warm breeze is blowing and your looking out at 10 acres of grass that needs mowing, branches that have blown down all winter, painting the house, and all the other projects that really need to be done in the few short months of summer....I look at my husband and say "Screw it, let's ride". I apparently say this a lot, as my brother just gave me that same bumper sticker! I cut the harley logo off and it's on my fridge. I've worked my can off my whole life and since we started riding a few years ago....life's too short...so now we just ride. My whole personality has changed because I don't sweat the little stuff anymore. The grass still needs mowing, the logs still need splitting, but I know I enjoy life a lot more after climbing on my bike for a couple hours and feeling that warm breeze and the sunshine...well, you all know the feeling. So the next time your having a lousy day, screw it, get out there and ride!

The hubby and I are taking our 3 sons out to Spearfish/Deadwood for a trip in a couple of weeks!! We don't want to travel interstate (I-90) so we are looking at Hwy 44 south of I-90 . We've never been out there before. Just wondering...has anyone ridden this road in the last year? Is it a decent one (potholes, etc)? Also, have gotten a lot of info off the website as far as where to ride, (Needles, Spearfish Canyon, Custer Park) but anyone have any funky off the beaten path roads or places we should stop. We'll be out there a week and the boy's can't wait. Thanks!

A bunch of us are riding to Rockton WI. A little tiny town in the hills that's suppose to have great b-b-q chicken! It's one of those little hideaway places that a lot of bikes go to!! Can't wait!!

if I buy them from you and if you ever want them back, I will send them back to you. I don't ever plan on selling my bike ...cuz it fits me perfectly, easy to handle, pipes sound great and is the most comfy ride!
