Like fresh corn on the cob, but not the mess ...
Iowawegian replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
Oh my gosh.....do you know how many years I've sat on our front porch husking sweet corn, trying to get every little bit of silk off? I can't wait to try this next yr!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Silver T for posting the video...you've just made my life a lot easier as it's hard not to beat a meal of sweet corn!!! By the way....saw a film yesterday on cooking large batches of sweet corn. They husked it first, stuck it in a coleman large size cooler and poured hot water over it. Shut the lid, 20 min later the whole batch was done. Thought it was a great way to cook large batches of sweet corn!- 13 replies

First time I've been at a computer since Pork n da Pines, so the hubby and I just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone!! We didn't get to spend a lot of time up there, but it was fun to see old friends and meet new ones!! Also a shout out to Astraka...Gary and I were in Soldiers Grove this past weekend. Took a ride down to Wazekua...tried finding your place, but no luck. He thought we should be on Hwy 131 and I thought you said Hwy 61. Were either one of us right? Anyway...you've got a great looking trike! Thanks again, everyone! Deb & Gary

Hi Peggy! We live on 1 mile of gravel before we hit blacktop. It's always scary for me, but since I drive my own bike sometimes, I've learned to not say anything because you just have to get through it. One thing that I've found Gary doesn't mind...instead of saying anything, gasping, etc... is if I see a hazard or feel he's going to fast around a sharp curve, I lightly, and I mean lightly touch his side. It lets him know I'm concerned about something that's ahead without scaring the bejeezes out of him. The hubby has always been a more cautious driver than I have been. His eyesight for deer is better than mine, but sometimes, his mind is on other things. This seems to work well for both of us! Deb

Well, it happened AGAIN yesterday morning. No one got hurt, but the semi had to pass the bus on the shoulder of the road because he couldn't stop in time. What is it going to take to make people slow down. NORTHWOOD, IA - A semi-truck driver is ticketed for passing a school bus while it had its stop-arm out Thursday morning. The driver is identified as Thomas Burkhart of Kentucky. He drives for Swinford Trucking Company of Illinois. Worth County authorities say the bus driver reported the semi at around 8:00am. A police officer stopped Burkhart in Northwood. He's cited with unlawful passing. This comes just two days after Aaron Gunderson was taken into custody in the hit and run death of Kadyn Halverson of Kensett, as she tried to board her school bus. Gunderson was ticketed for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right away. Charges against Gunderson are pending an investigation into the crash.

You should be not only proud of them, but also of yourself!!! I think it's great that you have such a close bond with them. Know what your going through as we raised 3 son's ourselves....it's not easy seeing them leave, but it helps to know they turned out pretty darn good!!!

It hasn't been a good week around here.....Tues morning a 7 yr old girl was getting on the school bus and a pick up killed her. Hit and run. It happened right down our road. The hubby was hauling gravel for the county and was the first one that came upon the accident. 18 kids on the bus watched it happen. She laid 3 bus lengths down the road. She was DOA. Thank God they found the driver of the pick up because every one of those kids could describe the truck. We live in a rural area where everyone knows everyone and it's really hit hard. I feel so bad for Gary as he's having flashbacks. He's a volunteer fireman/emt, but you never get over the sight of a little girl laying there lifeless. Anyway, was going to ask for your prayers for not only the little girl's family, but also the hubby..... but I'm afraid to even ask after I keep reading the the thread about people not thinking this is the right place.....so I guess I'll just ask for you to keep him in your thoughts. Thanks Deb NORTHWOOD — A 7-year-old Worth County girl was killed Tuesday morning by an alleged hit-and-run driver as she prepared to get on her school bus. The Iowa State Patrol identified the girl as Kadyn Halvorson of rural Kensett. The driver, identified as Aaron Dwayne Gunderson, 31, of Northwood, allegedly fled the scene but was later apprehended. Gunderson was ticketed for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way. Iowa State Patrol Trooper Mindy Griffin said the Northwood-Kensett school bus was stopped to pick up the child when a 2002 Chevrolet pick-up traveling southbound on Raven Avenue failed to stop for the bus and struck the girl. The accident happened at 7:49 a.m. at 4336 Raven Ave., near the home of the child’s babysitter. It’s about 2.3 miles north of 410th Street/County Road A38 between Northwood and Kensett. The child was crossing Raven Avenue to get on the northbound bus when she was hit. Griffin said the bus had its red lights activated and the stop arm was deployed from the side of the bus as required by law. The children on the school bus witnessed the accident, as did the babysitter, Griffin said. The vehicle and Gunderson were taken into custody by the Worth County deputies about two miles from the accident scene. The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed. Northwood-Kensett Superintendent Tom Nugent said Tuesday was a sad day for everyone in the school district. “We were notified of the tragic accident and we are now providing crisis assistance for our kids and we are working in collaboration with law enforcement,” Nugent said. — By Peggy Senzarino, Arian Schuessler

(and I'm even more tickled, I'm able to handle her!!!) And yes I'm keeping my Virago, as she's the best bike I've ever owned !! 2004 1100 VStar Classic

I am sooooooooooooo excited!!!! I'll try and make this short....our oldest son bought a 2004 1100 V Star Classic about 5 years ago. I've always told him, if he ever wants to sell that bike that I wanted first crack at it......Well, I finally got my chance. He was at the dealers buying a new bike and I got the call! I had 5 minutes to make up my mind! I ride an 1100 Virago that I just love. I was worried I might not be able to handle the V Star with it being so much heavier....anyway...he brought it home to me Sunday and I put 65 miles on it. The hubby followed me the with Venture....and so far so good. It's going to take me a while to get used to the width of the bike, wider handlebars, floor boards and the braking, but I think I'll be able to do it!!! I will never sell my Virago because she has been the best bike I could have ever had, but I'm so tickled to get the VStar!! The only thing I want to add is a windshield. Called J & P cycle...shield was $157.00 but I about fell over that the quick disconnect mounting hardware was $147.00 in addition!!!! I didn't order it because I was in sticker shock. Anyone know where I can find it cheaper? I tried uploading a pix of it but I'm getting the message upload failed! Don't know what I'm doing wrong....Can anyone help me out?
