Hey Jeremy, Sorry to hear about your 87'. I have an 86' V65 magna as well as an 87' VR and while riding the V65 at the beginning of the summer I went to pick up Jean (co-pilot) at work and when I pulled into the parking lot I noticed that it was freshly paved and I thought "wow, this is nice and smooth" I got off my bike, covered it and went inside to wait for Jean. When I came outside, I was horrorified to see the bike on it's side! I pulled off the cover and saw that the kickstand had sunk into the pavement! Every time the wind would blow, the bike would pivot on the kickstand, it scuffed up the seat, sidecover, muffler and the handlegrip. I was so bumbed I almost called a cab! After the accident, I was so mad I decided to redo the seat, bought another side cover and handlegrip and Installed headers on the bike. It looked really great after that, But I found that I didn't use the cover nearly as much after that. Also I stay away from fresh pavement now! I hope this spures you to make your 87' look even better than before! Good Luck on the repairs, Earl

Hey Rick, I have a cruse control panel from an 87' VR that is fully functional with a very slight crack where the screw connects the panel to the handle bars that is yours for the postage! I will need your address to send it on it's way. I have not done the swap you are talking about, but did replace my cruse control unit to spiff up my bike a bit. this CC unit has all of the lights, the power switch as well as the 5 pin female connector! If you can use this part just let me know. Good luck on your project! Ride Safe, Earl

Hi Jack, Been there, done that as well! 16 years, Believe me, It's her LOSS! My Jean is 10 times the woman my X was! My dad always said "boy, if it don't kill ya', it will make you stronger!" IMHO, Keep the bike, throw the X to the curb! Hang tuff, Earl and Jean -
Hey Squid, Floating rotors are actually a two piece set-up that a lot of sport bike riders run on their R1's and R6's. There is the "hub" section which attaches to the front or rear wheel and the "caliper contact area" which is the surface the brake pads come in contact with. (see attached thumnail) I have been working on modifying a set of R1 floating Rotors and Calipers for my 87' VR, when I'm done I'll post the results on the VR site. The biggest benifit of the floating rotors is they don't warp from repeated high speed stops like the one piece rotors that come stock on the VR's and RSV"s. I'll keep you posted as to the results, Ride Safe, Earl

Hi Ken, First off, I am glad to hear you came thru you accident with as little personal damage as you did. That being said, I can't tell you how many times I have been distracted by the things passing by while I have been riding. Sometimes I think Jean (wife) has the better end of the deal being the co-pilot. My suggestion would be to rest now and get well. You'll have plenty of time to fight with your Ins. company over what the bike is worth when you are feeling better. It's not like you are going to be back in the saddle in a week...or month for that matter. Rest up, and by the time you deal with the Ins. company after being cooped up in the house for a few weeks I'm SURE you will be fired up enough to deal with them! Get well soon, Earl and Jean

Welcome Larry, Jean and I were glad to hear that you are ok after your accident. We also hope that your scoot is not to badly damaged. Please feel free to ask any questions about your VR as you tackle your repairs, the members of this site are the best! Mend quick, It's harder to ride in the snow! Earl and Jean

Hi Vic, The Stock rotors on most all of the Yammies is heat treated cast steel which provides excellent wear under "normal" breaking conditions. A brake/rotor upgrade would put you into oversized piston calipers and SS rotors to the tune of $1500.00. So unless you like to go REALLY fast and stop REALLY quickly, The cintered brake pads would work just fine for you IMHO. It is the Nickel content of the SS that determins weather it is magnitic or not. More nickel, less magnatism. On my first gen. I figure it's easier/cheaper to replace the pads more often then the rotors, what with the lack of availability of the stock rotors for my particular bike. I'm all for a little extra stopping power but the first time you have to shell out to replace a set of front rotors on your RSV because you overheated them you might find yourself doing what I do, laying back a bit and being a bit easy on the brakes. If your 800+ lb. motorcycle is sliding, you are out of control in my book. I'm SURE some of the other riders here on the site with a more aggressive riding style will sound off but frankly if I wanted to power brake my bike onto the front wheel or lock the front brakes and do burn-outs I'd ride an R1! Maybe I'm getting old! Just my thoughts on this subject. Ride Safe, Earl

Hi all, There is a guy on ebay selling a set of first gen. VR carb. diaphragms new with a starting bid of $49.99. He even shows pics of the install right on the bid page. Dan, I wish I had a sound bite for the other members but I do have a pic!

Hi Dan, I removed my stock exhausts in March of this year and replaced them with the Jardines and what a difference! Right away I noticed the bike was more peppy in the mid RPM range and the engine wound up quite a bit faster. I didn't have to rejet and the sound is sooo cool! Not too loud at idle but when you grab a handfull, she lets you know! Even my wife likes them! Now that doesn't happen often enough! Ride Safe, Earl and Jean

To Don and the other members of the VR.Org. "Staff", I try to log on daily just to see how everyone is doing and from time to time to receive help with a problem I am having. I often wish keeping up with my other "family" members was as easy and fullfilling as the time I spend on the VR.Org. website. Both Jean and myself sit in front of our computer and we laugh, and cry with each and every post we read here. We say prayers for people we have never met, We give thanks to people for the smallest bit of kindness and this site has enriched our lives in much the same way that riding motorcycles has. I just wanted to take a moment of my time for all the time that Don and all the other staff members have spent making this the best website on the internet. Respectfully, Earl and Jean

I live in a relatively rural area in south central Pennsylvania and have a small Machine/ Motorcycle shop in a building beside my house. I am real big on motion sensored lighting, and have alarms on my home and shop. Two times in the past, the motion sensors went off and as I stepped out on the front porch I saw two young men running thru the field beside my shop... the lights scared them off. The only time I was actually broken into, the shop alarm went off, I stepped out on the front porch with my older mossburg 12 ga. shot gun to see one young man passing MC parts out the broken window of my shop. I alternate rounds in my shotgun, birdshot, buckshot, birdshot, buckshot. I peppered the lower torso(a**) of the young man standing outside the window pretty well, there was a 55 gal. drum next to the side of my shop that I hammered with the buckshot and the other young man came out the window and laid on the ground. The police came, were not to happy about the shooting, I went to court, and of all things it was ruled an "accidental shooting" I guess I caught a break from the Judge. I do shoot ALL of my weapons regularly and would probley use my 9mm or .357 inside my home. The young man that wasn't shot paid to replace the window and now works on his MC at my shop, we've become pretty good friends! Who wodda' thought? I realize this is not a "home invasion" but it is the only thing I can compare it to. I can tell you this..... if you come into my home and you are not invited, you will be stopped....period! Just my thoughts on this subject. Earl

Hi Gerald, I have had pretty good luck with WD-40 on yellow jackets earlier this year. If you get the big can and use the small red straw that comes with it you can stay back a few feet and move closer as they flee. Not only does it kill them on contact, (wicks up their bodies and smothers them) but it is absorbed by everything it touches and fumes off even after you stop spraying. As an added benifit, if you are lucky enough to hit the nest, it gets absorbed into the nest material, killing the eggs as well. I admit they are tough little buggers and I pretty much used the entire big can on the two nests I found. I got a deal at Home Depot, 2 big cans for $5.00. Hope this helps, Earl and Jean

Brake fluid warning light
skydoc_17 replied to Andrew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There is a sensor on the rear brake and it might be nothing more than the brake pads wearing which moves the caliper pucks closer to the rotor which in turn uses more fluid which makes the res. Lower. I find that because of the location, i have a tendency to not check the rear res. Very often. I would try this first befor ripping into any wires. The only other thing i have happen is there are two wire plugs just below the handlebars that come from the front res. I got the brake alarm, i unplugged the two wires, cleaned them greased them and replugged them. All was well after that. Hope this helps, earl -
Another 1st gen brake problem
skydoc_17 replied to PEIslander's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hi PEIslander, According to the Yammer Service Manual, (page 6-4) Max runout on the front brake rotors can be .15mm (.006 ins.) You said in your post you were seeing .5mm (.020 ins) runout. This would be more than 3 times the allowable runout according to the service manual. Sounds to me that you have a pair of warped front rotors. The Mark 1 VR used the unvented rotors (no slots) and like a regular car were suseptable to warping. Plus if you use the front brake lever more than the foot pedal you would be stopping your 850 lb. scoot with just the right rotor. If you are seeing more runout on the left side, it is one of two things, you brake a lot with the foot pedal or you have a caliper draging on the left side. Either way, If you decide to replace the rotors I would take a REAL CLOSE LOOK at both of the front calipers to make Darn Sure you don't smoke those new rotors. (Don't ask me how I know this!) Just my 2 cents, Ride safe, Earl -
A very big thanks to danob11 and lonestarmedic!

Thank You All for the kind words, I have a few sets of the terminal blocks left over and a bunch of the terminal connectors left over if anyone needs any of these items just send me a Pm or post it here and I will be more than happy to send them along to you free of charge. For those of you who are Electrically Challanged as I am I would be willing to Purchase the fusebox, prewire it, and send it along to you for only the cost of the fusebox and wire. All you would have to do is mount the fusebox, connect the old wires to the new fusebox and off you go! Let me know if I can Help! Ride safe, Earl. -
