  1. I would just like to say that both Jean and I admire those people that have quit smoking!! I personally didn't start until I was 40+ years old! (Don't ask why, It's a stupid story!) Recently, My work has gotten really strict about the whole smoking thing, forcing us to go to the far corner of the parking lot, into a small "shack" exposed to the weather, and just this week, I was written up for not returning to my work area fast enough after my smoke break. I have NEVER been written up at work before. I tried the Chantix med., and Jean found me in the garage, sawing on my wrist with an old rusty, tuna can lid so I had to give that one up! I had surgery last year and thought it would be a perfect time to quit, but I got soooo grumpy that It came to the point that it was either smoke again or start sleeping in the garage. I am a high energy person by nature, and smoking "calms me down". I have chewed gum until my inner lips were chewed up, I've chewed on straws, pencils, and used the patch, (don't smoke while using the patch, you fall down!). At this point, I would go to a "Witch Doctor" if I could get a positive result. I am, for the most part, a VERY confident person, but every time the subject of smoking comes up, I just hang my head, ashamed of myself. I didn't mean to get off on a rant here, Congrads on your ability to stop smoking, you have my upmost respect! Earl
  2. Thank You For The Enlargable Picture, I thought the guy was dating my X-Wife!!! Earl
  3. Boy, after spending that kind of money, thats the kind of stuff that makes your stomach flip up side down! Well, I'm glad you found the "root" cause for the problem! It's good you can laugh about it...NOW! Earl
  4. I don't mean to get off on a rant here, but after looking at the Ebay ad for the washer I couldn't help but notice that the shipping cost for that $11.00 washer was $6.00 more dollars! I guess at this point, I am BEGGING Lonestarmedic to please measure that washer, and like I said in my other post, I will make one for anybody who wants one. Heck, If you feel guilty about taking me up on my offer, Make an $11.00 donation to VentureRider.Org and save the $6.00 shipping cost! No wonder we're paying $3.00 for gas! Earl
  5. If someone will send me the dimentions for this washer, Outside diameter, Inside diameter, and thickness, I will make everyone on this site one for FREE! Is the material aluminum or steel? If you even might think you need one, I'll make you one! Good Grief! Washer Safe, Earl
  6. OK First Gen. MK1 owners, here is your chance to up-grade your front forks to the 1986-1993 MK2 Front Forks...Cheap! Front Forks are currently listed on Ebay and the bid is at $5.00! Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/forks-swingarm-1986-yamaha-venture-1300-royale_W0QQitemZ160297653154QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item160297653154&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 I don't know the seller and have nothing vested in these parts, just seemed like a good deal. Earl
  7. I have an 87' VR with the Jardine exhausts, I know it's a First Gen. but it's the same motor, and there is QUITE a difference between the stock exhaust and the Jardine exhaust! It will never sound like a big twin but it will sound much smoother and more powerful. There have been other VR riders that have complained about the loudness of my exhausts so in a group I tend to ride at the rear of the pack, but for myself, when I wring the throttle out, it comes as close to driving a race car as I need to get for a fraction of the cost of a Firebird, Transam, or a V8 Mustang. Even Jean doesn't seem to mind, as long as I keep it under !00 mph! I know there are some people that enjoy the "Thump" of a big twin but for me personally, I enjoy the "Rumble" of the V4 better. I think it is a matter of what you enjoy, after all it is YOUR scoot! If other people don't enjoy the sound of your exhaust, let them ride in front of you, or stay home for that matter. Just my thoughts on this subject, for what there worth. Ride Safe, Earl
  8. Here is another First Gen. Windshield on Ebay that is dirt cheap and has free shipping, again never bought one just passing it along. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-Royale-Windscreen-Windshield_W0QQitemZ270288583737QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item270288583737&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 Ride Safe, Earl and Jean
  9. Here's a TALL First Gen. Windshield on Ebay, I have never done business with this seller, Just passing along another option. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-VENTURE-ROYALE-XVZ12-XVZ13-WINDSHIELD-TALL-XVZ_W0QQitemZ290272844519QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item290272844519&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 Ride safe, Earl and Jean
  10. Hey Mike, Where to start! I placed my bike on the center stand, I placed a shallow pan about 18"x 18" under the general area of the master cyl. remove false tank cover, seat and right side side cover. I removed the frame brace that runs parallel to the seat that blocks the removal of the Master Res. I drained the Res. My hose that runs from the Res. to the master was shot so I cut the line off, below the res. and above the master cyl. with side cutters. there are two bolts that hold the res. to the frame, remove these. there are two wires that plug into the res. and run to the harness that goes to the dash, unplug these two wires. You will have to rotate the res. to get it to come out of the frame, it is very tight in there, don't give up, it will suddenly fall out of the frame when rotated properly. next, unbolt the master from the frame, I used a cresent wrench on the master to break the brake lines loose. There will be two of them. The brake lines are on the back and side of the master. You will need a GOOD pair of inturnal snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring from the end of the master. I bought a pair of snap ring pliars from Sears, with interchangable anvils, you will also need them if you ever do the front brake or clutch masters, I paid around $26.00 and they were worth every penny! Remove the guts from the master, I laid everything in the order it came out, clean the master and res. with brake cleaner in the aerosol can, install the new kit, Now you have two options, you can buy the Yamaha Res. to Master brake hose ($30.00) or do what I did, go to Tractor Supply and buy a foot of Chemical resistant tubing ($1.35) and cut to the right length. Put one end of the hose on the master with a hose clamp, put it back in the frame, reconnect the brake lines,as you rebolt it to the frame, Make sure you put the rod into the boot that goes to the brake pedal as you rebolt it. Now, wiggle the res. with the top on securely, back into the frame and reconnect the sensor wires, install the top of the hose with a hose clamp and bolt the res. to the frame. Fill the res. and bleed, and bleed and bleed the brakes until you get all the air out. I have some really good pics of this area of my bike in my photo gallery under "VR to R1 Brake Swap". Go to my profile, and on the right side of that page, you will see my photo gallery, click the photo that says VR to R1 brake swap 1" and there is a few pics of the right side of my bike cleared for the master removal. If you have any other questions, drop me a line and I will walk you thru it. Brake Safe, Earl
  11. I just wanted to throw in that any headlight bulb you buy NEEDS to be an H4 rated bulb. A regular 9003 automotive headlight bulb will fail prematurely due to vibration. The H4 bulbs have the larger diameter filament and will withstand the vibration of a motorcycle much better. Ride Safe, Earl
  12. Hey All, Just to clear this up, Am I understanding that The 1996 to present VMAX and the 1993 VR have a 4 brush starter, and are interchangeable with ALL of the first gen. VR's? Sorry to make this so simple but Electrical is like VOODOO to me! Start Safe, Earl P.S. I too think it would be GREAT if Lutz could come to the U.S. for a visit, I'd love to buy him a few frosty beverages of his choice. Just my 2 cents! Earl
  13. Hi Gary, I sent you a PM, and here is the layout for the fuse box. Hope this helps! FRONT OF BIKE: 10A ACC 15A HEAD 15A IGNITION 20A SIGNAL 10A TAIL Ride Safe, Earl
  14. You might have good luck taking the starter switch assembly apart and clean the contacts well with aerosol contact cleaner (I use CRC QD Electronic Cleaner, Wally Mart) and put dielectric grease on the contacts, That worked for me. The battery cable upgrade is a great idea and on my winter "to do" list. Also, check my profile, in my photo gallery is a description for replacing the stock fusebox with an ATC fusebox. Ride Safe, Earl
  15. Hey Jack, I have done business with The Old Bike Barn in the past, friendly, fast, and good products. I have not personally purchased the VR diaphragms but they do sell them. Here is a link: http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Motorcycle_Parts/Carb-Slide-Diaphragm/V-Max-Venture-Royale-Mikuni-Slide-Diaphragm;jsessionid=0a0108431f43878438ac0bba423aab70b6bac005d706.e3eSbNyQc3mLe34Pa38Ta38Lc3z0 Hope this helps, Ride Safe, Earl
  16. Hey Kite, Thanks for the kind words, It put a smile on my face to blow thru that driving test with an 800 pound motorcycle as old as I am! After it was all over, the DMV instructor actually shook my hand! I too try to keep as "nimble" as I can be on my VR and would love to take a shot at that skills test the motor officer was driving. Perhaps we will have a chance to take a ride together sometime, It would be my pleasure I assure you! Ride Safe, But Nimble, Earl
  17. I know this is gonna sound a little anal but when I first started towing a trailer with our old bike (86' VR) I would stand on a bathroom scale, and Jean would hand all of the items that were going in the trailer to me. We subtracted my body weight and kept a running total of all of the items. After we did this a few times we noticed the weight didn't change much, plus or minus 10 or 15 pounds because we usually carried the same stuff every time. I was even able to weigh the tounge using this method. Oh, by the way a trip to the local recycling center and a few bucks got me the weight of the trailer, empty. They had a really nice, big scale there and were happy to help. Tow Safe, Earl and Jean
  18. In my honest opinon, the first question I would be asking MY wife is: do you prefer to be a passenger or a rider? My wife's answer is she would prefer to be a passenger. She loves to ride but does not want to drive. If your wife says she wants to be the driver, then the next question I would ask is, Do you want to learn how to ride a bike for the first time on an 800 plus pound three wheeled motorcycle. If she answers this question "yes" she must be one hellofa' woman, and you are a very lucky man! If she says "no" then you might want to think about triking a smaller bike, in the 750 to 1100 cc range. Something with enough poop to run on the highway but small enough for her to handle. And when YOUR bones get old enough you both can step up to a triked goldwing, RSV, or Harley. By then SHE might even give YOU a few driving lessons on the trike! I have more than one friend who bought more bike than they could handle and either stopped riding it or even worse.....crashed it and NEVER rode again. Just my two cents, for what it's worth! Trike Safe, Earl and Jean
  19. I recently had to take my motorcycle riding test again, (don't ask!?!?) and made the mistake of bringing my 87' VR for the test. The DMV Officer got a big laugh when he saw my bike, and told me "most people borrow a dirt bike for this test"! Well I scraped the pegs quite a few times, but never put my feet down, and missed all the cones, and pulled off 3 figure eights in an area the size of 2 parking spaces. I hope I NEVER have to ride like that again! Nice riding in the video, That Officer has SKILLS! Earl and Jean
  20. Hi All, A friend of a friend is selling his 2001 XVS1100 VSTAR (see pics below) for $2500.00. It has A Harley Headlight and Running Lights, Hard Saddle Bags, Cobra Exhausts, and rear Air Suspension with onboard compressor. It has 6100 miles on it. It is a bit loud for my tastes but Ebay has stock pipes cheap. If anyone knows anything about these bikes, PLEASE let me know, I know very little about the big twins. Thanks for your help, Earl
  21. Hey Mike, Both Jean and I are glad to hear that you faired as well as you did in your accident. Thank you for reminding us that good riding gear is an important part of the riding experience. We both hope you heal quickly and return to riding as soon as possible. Earl and Jean
  22. Jean and I have 4 sons and 1 daughter. NONE of them got their drivers licenses until they were 18 years old! They ALL have their own policies, We did buy more than a few "a little better than a beater" cars for them but the Insurance and gas is paid for by them. Our three oldest sons have purchased newer cars/trucks/motorcycles and the youngest son and daughter are still driving the "beater" cars we bought for them. Their driving records weather good or bad did not affect our insurance one bit. And there has been a few times when our youngest son has had to park the car because he didn't have gas money. I have Erie Ins. on the Nissan Maxima and my S15 Jimmy and Progressive Ins. on the 87' VR, Full Coverage on the Nissan and VR and libility only on the S15 Jimmy and I pay $403.00 per year. I help my sons repair their cars/trucks/motorcycles and I do all the repairs on my daughter's car. I don't buy parts! I know this sounds like tough love but IMHO it's hard to have respect for something you don't pay for! By the way, the oldest son got off to a shaky start but after he got his first ticket and got the bill, he figured it out real quick! the rest of the crew have spotless driving records and pay accordingly. I have one son that regularly takes his motorcycle to the drag strip and my second oldest takes his v-tec honda civic pylon racing but they leave their "Need for speed" on the track. Just my 2 cents, Earl and Jean
  23. Gary, Both Jean and myself have you in our thoughts and prayers my friend. God Bless you and your family. Earl and Jean
  24. Hi Cliff, I'm glad to hear that you were able to fix the problem yourself. I have found that more than once that with the shared knowledge of this group I have been able to muster the courage to try things that I would not normally attempt. (electric things come to mind for me!) Glad I was able to help, I hope you and your wife have many wonderful rides together. Earl and Jean
  25. Hi Rosebud, This is Jean, I have never posted on the VR site before, But Earl pointed the thread out to me and said I should just "jump in" so I will. Thank you for this thoughtful message and as all of you ladies know we stand by our men and be strong thru the tough times so they will be there for us during the good times. It is a true pleasure to be part of the VR "family" and little things like this remind me of the important role we as VR women play in the lives of our VR men. Warm Regards, Jean.
