  1. Thanks Don! (You Old Softy!!) Earl
  2. I just wanted to take a moment to thank Reinhard, and Bob (Atlantadragonslayer) and anyone else that took the time to look into getting us a discount on the Carb. Diaphragms! With times as tough as they are right now, It's refreshing to see people going out of their way to help each other. Because of the efforts of those mentioned above I am now planning to replace the Carb. Diaphragms on my 86'VR, Something that was never in my budget before now! Here is a link to the thread describing the replacement of the Carb. Diaphragms with photos: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32052 If anyone has questions about the replacement, please feel free to PM me. And again, THANK YOU gents for making this happen! Earl
  3. The year was 1973, The car was a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner. Need I say More!?!? Earl
  4. Well Goose, Thanks for the tip on the Colortune! I was wondering after setting your Carbs. with the exhaust gas analyzer how close were you to the "Tride and True" seat the screw and back off 21/2 turns. Is a poor smoe like me even close using this method? Would you modify the rule to 2 turns...or 3? :confused24:I would be grateful for any light you could shed on this issue. Thanks, Earl
  5. I just thought I would throw some "Big Hair" into the pot! Earl
  6. Hey Terry, SWEEET lookin' 87'VR you got there, I really like the color! How many miles does it have on it? Just in time for spring riding season! Good Score! Earl
  7. Isn't Cow Poop Nitrogen Enriched!!!:rotfl::rotfl:
  8. Hey Joe, Other that the fact that your new truck color clashes with your RSV, It looks like a SWEEEET RIDE! Both Jean and I are very excited to hear about your new job! I know that being out on the road is not the best for your family but it has to be better than sitting around the house with no income! We wish you "Safe Journeys" on your new job! Does this mean that you will be keeping your scoot? Earl and Jean
  9. Hey John, Have you ever noticed that when you are digging around in your tool box for another tool because you don't have the exact "right" tool to do something on your RSV, for the most part you can usually find something that will work? Well, there isn't another tool that does the job in this case. You either own one or you don't. I own an 86'VR and an 87'VR and it was a no brainer for me, it costs LESS to buy the Carbtune than it would have to get two bikes Carb. Synced. just one time. When ever I have a performance issue or a vibration issue it's the first tool I grab now. Not to mention, I have Synced. the carbs on a few friends bikes and have received more that my fair share of beer, food, and the occasional big juicy kiss on the cheek (female) from bike owners that thought their bikes were near death and also thought that I had done some VOODOO on their bikes to get them to run like a champ again. Being a Machinist I own many "special" tools that I don't use every day but when I need that special tool I know I have it and it makes the job that much easier. Like the lady on the "Lorial" hair color commercial says, "I'm worth it"! Just my 2 cents, Earl
  10. Hey Bob, Could you tell me how often you need to clean your vent filter? Is this something you do with every oil change or is it an "as needed" kinda thing. Thanks, Earl
  11. Hey Dave, On page 8-4 of the First Gen. Manual, it states that the Camshaft to Cap Clearance should be .0008 to .0021 inches. when you get your caps from one of the members, find the cap that is stamped with the same number you are replacing, (I'd try this one first) install the cap on the cam and torque to 7.2 foot pounds with the plastic gage between the cap and cam. If after removing the cap you find that the plastic gage shows you are in the range of .0008 to .0021 then you should be OK. If the cap is less than .0008 then try another cap. If you can't find one that is in the .0008 to .0021 range then look for one that is greater than .0021. Use a piece of 600 grit wet and dry automotive sandpaper, place the sandpaper on a very flat surface, (a piece of glass works well for this) wet the sandpaper, draw the "legs" of the cap across the sandpaper using equal downward pressure on the cap. Do not rub back and forth, pull the cap in one direction only. After drawing the cap across the sandpaper a few times remeasure with the plastic gage. Keep drawing the cap until it comes into the .0008 to .0021 range. I would personally shoot for .0015 inches. Keep in mind that if you go below the .0008 range, then this cap is junk! So don't be too "heavy handed" while doing this operation. It's better to sand and check for an hour (not that it's going to take that long) than to over sand and scrap the cap out. I have used this method more than once and it has worked VERY WELL for me. It's not perfect but it will do the job nicely for you. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. By the way, I have been an Aerospace Machinist for 37 years so I am not suggesting this method lightly. Earl
  12. Last week the Carbtune was going for $78.27 US. Here's a link to the thread from last week: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=303544#post303544 I got one and it worked great for me. Earl
  13. Jean and I saw this movie last night and burned up a half a box of tissues before it was over. My father was a Marine, but did not die in action. I had no Idea the military went to such lengths for their KIA's. It made us feel proud to be Americans, first time in a while. YOU Must see this movie! Earl and Jean
  14. This is probably NOT what you had in mind but I was looking for the same part recently and while I was at Home Depot I saw a folding lid arm there, one was in brass and the other was Stainless Steel. I ended up finding a used one from a VR on Craigs List but if I had not I was going to pick up a pair(so they would both match). I also saw a pair of pnumatic cylinders that I thought was really cool, They were for a writing desk. Just some options in case you can't find one. Earl
  15. Hey Mark, I too welcome you home and Thank You For Your Service! I second the motion on the Seafoam after the tank and Carb. Bowel drain. Try a few tanks of gas with the Seafoam. Here is a link for the Carb. Diaphragm replacement: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32052 As far as the Coolant problem goes, check the line from the overflow tank to the radiator for pluggage. Could just be a sticky thermostat, regular riding will help that. The coolant by your right toe is from the water pump, which has a ceramic seal in it that doesn't like to be "dry". In other words, ride the bike regularly and if the coolant continues to leak, you may have to do a water pump rebuild. My 86'VR is the one that drips there when I don't run her regularly. If I ride her 2-3 times a week, no problems. The other thing to check is the fan, make sure it turns on when the temp. goes up. Right side of bike, behind the radiator side cover, two wire plug,if you connect battery power to that plug, fan should run. If fan runs, there is the temp. switch and I think a relay to auto cut on fan at higher temp. Earl
  16. Hey Bill, Thanks for the tip, I did remember! Had my Ensure today, LOL. I got the vent filter off of ebay, James. I guess I should mention that I had to remove the very small water line that is in front of the crank case vent tube coming out of the engine to get the vent filter in there. If your radiator is full when you pull that line it won't be after! I had a pair of rubber plugs handy and was able to plug off both the line and the nipple in the engine.(red cap plug in last pic) It was a gusher there for a moment or two but it made it a lot easier to get the vent filter in that tight space. Earl
  17. At the end of the riding season last year, I bit the bullet and Installed a K&N Air Filter. Since the weather has been so bad here, (snowing again today, 3 ins. by morning) I have had an extended amount of time to do all of the things to my 87'VR that I would never do during the riding season. I removed the Air Box Cover and to my surprise there was a BIG messy oily spot on my brand new filter where the Crank Case Vent Tube enters the Air Box. I was not happy. Well the old 87'VR has 75,000 miles on it now and I figured that there is probably going to be some blow by. I remembered that on my 86' V65 Magna, before I rebuilt the engine I had the same problem and added a Crank Case Vent Filter and disconnected the Crank Case Vent Tube from The Air Box. So, I did the same thing on the 87'VR. The pics below show the plumbing that I removed, How I plugged the two holes in the Air Box, The New Vent Filter, and the final result. Any Questions, Feel free. Earl
  18. Nice lighting George! Would it be safe to say that not every First Gen. owner could run these awsum lights because of the amp draw on our stock, wimpy electrical systems? Earl
  19. You Can definitely get a better price on the Carbtune Pro if you buy from Morgan! They have a special on the Pro plus the Pouch. I actually just got the Carbtune Pro without the pouch and purchased a small plastic tool box from Wally-World for $3.97 and now I don't have to disconnect the tubes every time I put it away, plus I think it is much better protected. also there was a top tray in the tool box that holds all of the adapters nicely. Here's the link to Morgan: http://www.carbtune.com/ As we speak the "special" with the Carbtune Pro and the Pouch is $88.24US and I think it was about $5.00 to ship (Maybe a little less). Mine came in about 6 days and was very securely packaged. The Carbtune Pro by its self is $78.27US. What a difference it made in the performance of both my 87'VR and 86'VR. definitely a MUST HAVE item. I hope you find this information useful, Earl
  20. Hey Tom, Both Jean and I wanted to wish you "Safe Journeys" on your upcoming trip. Don't worry, If you miss the snow, we'll send you a box of it! Have a great time, Earl and Jean
  21. You know the rule......no picky...no helpy! By the way, Congrats on the new trailer! Earl and Jean
  22. I Finally know why they didn't put a Reverse on the First Gens., ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Beacuse then, we could outrun those Second Gens. IN BOTH DIRECTIONS!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Earl
  23. Something must have changed, The Link worked for me. Earl
  24. I'm good for a set. Earl
