I have just returned from my 4 state, 2400 mile "Maintenance Tour" and I wanted to personally thank Steve DuBois, (Steve D), his lovely wife Michelle, Joe Taylor (Shot) and his lovely wife Deborah, Jay Richards (J Richards) and his lovely girlfriend Patricia and all of the VR.ORG members that showed up for Steve D's little "Maintenance Day". I even had the privilege to work on a 1974 R75 BMW and with the help of Steve D got that piece of "rolling history" running so well we were able to take a ride with the proud owner of her. I also had the honor of greeting a group of World War II Vets as they returned home with the North Carolina Patriot Guard Riders and needless to say, there was not a dry eye in the house when they landed. I was treated to some fine southern style pot roast, one of the best steaks I have ever had, AND some world famous Parker's BBQ! Oh Yea, I actually worked on quite a few bikes in between meals and naps and rides and the occasional cigar! Southern Hospitality is alive and well and I am living proof of that fact. My 87'VR averaged 42MPG, never missed a beat over the 2400 miles, and according to my fancy new GPS unit that Jean got me for my birthday, My top speed was 100.8 MPH as a result of a rather brisk afternoon/evening ride I took with a VR.ORG member that will remain nameless (in case his wife reads this post over his shoulder!) I just wanted to take a moment to thank ALL of the VR.ORG members that responded to my original post of "Willing To Work For Food/Lodging" If I didn't get a chance to visit/work on your bike it was due to weather and time limitations. I saw temps. in the high 70's low 80's while in the south but upon returning to Pa. today, I rode into Duncansville with the temp. at 39 degrees and rain. I had more clothes on my back than I did in my travel bag! Thank you ALL again for giving me the privilege to work on your equipment, and for sharing your homes and hearts with me, I was truly humbled by the gesture. Oh, and on a final note, Jean says THANKS for sending me HOME! Earl and Jean

Hey Beau, I applaud you efforts to solve the noise, tranny shifting problems you have been having. The few times I have heard of clutch slippage problems with the "Eco-friendly" motor oils is during extended in town driving where the engine temp. rises into the upper range and during high ambient temperatures. Since you tried your experiment pretty late in the riding season for us Northern folks, (day time temps. not over 60F usually) you may want to keep a close eye on that clutch come spring time when the Temps. will get much hotter. I have seen more than one bike run the "Eco-friendly" oils and never have a problem and I have also seen more than one bike run the same oil and slip like a school girl on a icy sidewalk. I personally think that clutch spring pressure plays a part in this, but have not been able to study the clutch spring pressure affect to be able to say that this is an absolute fact. (I'm still compiling data on this) I suggest you continue to monitor this change in the way you lube your engine and tranny and if it proves to be a "fix" for the whine and hard shifting then I congratulate you on your courage to "think outside the box" to solve a difficult problem. Earl

If there is someone from this site making the spacers you need I will bow out. But if they are no longer making them, or you can't get in touch with them I would be happy to help a fellow VR.ORG Member with these spacers. I do not own a Second Gen. so I will need Dimentions and material type, but if you can furnish me with this information, I can make anything you need. Hope this helps, Earl

Hey Norm, I have a rear trunk from a 1986 (MKII) VR that is sound plastic wise but would need some paint work to match your 98'RSTD. (Nice bike by the way!) I even have the chrome mounting rack that was on the 86'VR if that would help. If you are interested, PM me. Earl

Ebay Carb. Diaphragm Replacement!
skydoc_17 replied to skydoc_17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Randy, I just wanted to mention that the cap screw set I am selling has had the knurled outer diameter machined off and then the outer diameter is polished, I think you will be hard pressed to find a nicer set of cap screws at a hardware store. Just an FYI, Earl -

FYI, 47 percent of ALL Arab immigrants are Catholic!!!! Who left Iraq because they were beaten, and tortured, because they believe the same way we do! Being Irish and in my own lifetime I have been referred to by Americans as a "Potato Ni@@er" I measure a man by the way he looks me in the eye, and shakes my hand, and conducts his business, NOT by where he comes from. I have run into more than one Butt-Head and never had to leave the United States to find him. Compare the violence in ANY major city in the U.S to the violence in the Middle East or any European country and you will be hard pressed to fine more there than here. I'm glad we are buying oil from the Canadians but if the Arab's started selling it for $1.00 a barrel tomorrow, I'd say "filler-up". I'm a fifth generation United States Citizen and still get treated like an immigrant from time to time. My name is Earl Harrell and that how I feel about this subject.

Hey Phil, Utadventure hit the nail right on the head with this one! Pull the windshield, 4 Phillips Head screws on sides of dash unit, just loosen them, dash cover comes off, 10MM nuts on back of dash unit, (be careful not to drop them) Rock the dash unit forward after disconnecting the speedo cable, 3 in 1 oil, or motor oil works just fine, (not WD40) button everything back up, (don't forget to reconnect the speedo cable!) and you should be good to go. Hey Don, I have the Garmin Nuvi 855 and although I haven't had it very long it functions very well for me on the bike. The screen does wash out a bit in bright sun but in my truck it's not a problem. On the bike, with the voice commands, I rarely look at the screen anyway. My bike is a bit on the loud side and I use the headphone jack witch solves the noise problem. I love the size, very easy to remove and carry around, It has a feature called "go home" which gives you 1 touch course plotting for your home where ever you are. The battery doesn't last as long as they say, ( 2 hrs. max) but I have a car charger for the truck and I found a hard wire charger for my bike. ( no need for a cig. lighter input) This unit has more bells and whistles than any other GPS I've had so it's hard to compare but I like the Nuvi 855 very much. I don't use bluetooth and this unit does not have it. Hope this helps, Earl

Hey Tom and Gang, It snowed here AGAIN today ! I wish I could have made it up to NY with you guys. I see the "Blond Coyote" got her ski jacket on that penguin!:crackup:You should have come here for Ice Cream, we were making it on the @#$% front porch! I am glad you all had a great ride, hopefully we can get together in the spring. Earl

An easy check would be to put a level on the tongue of the trailer, then check the level with you one up and then two up. I think you are going to find that the tongue is going to be "high" until you get two up. All the tongue weight in the world is not going to help until you lower the tongue. Think of a triangle, the height of the end of the trailer tongue is the side adjacent of the triangle, any weight added to the tongue is effectively being shifted to the rear of the trailer because of the angle created by the side opposite and the hypotenuse of the triangle. So to put this in ENGLISH, lower the tongue until you see level to 1/4 bubble low with one up and your scoot and trailer should track the same as it did before! (sorry for the tech-no-babble!) Earl

Passing Light hollow bolt
skydoc_17 replied to iquester's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Hey James, Thanks for the kind words. Being a First Gen. owner, if it wasn't for the help and kindness of the members of this site, my bike could very well not be running today. I try to pay it forward every chance I get. The world would be a much better place if we would all get along together as well as we do on this site. Knowing that Mike can now ride his scoot with his lighting fully functional is my reward. Earl -
Hey Saddlebum, I could not agree with you more! I installed new speakers and gave the old cassette deck the once over and the stereo on these first gens. ROCKS! I go to the flea markets and pick up all my favorite music from twenty-five cents to a buck a tape. I must admit though on a few extended rides, I have listened to the same tape for like 500 miles! I keep forgetting to put a new tape in. Of course in the old days I played more than one cassette until it spooled off the reel! Aaaahhhh, memories! Earl

Hey BEER30, WOW! What a nice trailer! Thanks for taking the time to explain that whole "Fiberglass Thing!" Talking about "thinking outside the box!" Very impressive! Earl

Cold start problem 86
skydoc_17 replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Gerry, I have an 86'VR and an 87'VR and you would SWEAR they were two different types of bikes! To start the 86'VR I give full choke, hit the button, and she fires right up. Now the 87'VR (which is my favorite) If I even LOOK at the choke lever BEFORE I hit the start button, it will not start when it is cold. Here's what I do for the 87'VR: Key on, left thumb on choke lever (but do not move lever) I then push the Start Button, once the bike fires I then use my left thumb to move the choke lever until I hit between 1500 and 2000 RPMs. Then like you said, I'm good for the rest of the day. Don't ask me why! But it works every time.... I just have to remember which bike I'm on! Hope this helps, Earl -
Hey Wizard, I just got a Garmin Nuvi 855 for my birthday and I made this mount for it for my First Gen. VR. It's Clean, works really well, and is made from Stainless Steel so it will look the same 10 years from now as it does today. I have more. Pics Below. I just wanted to mention that this Ebay seller has the Garmin 785T for $259.00 with free shipping! I have no connection with this guy, just a good price. I have had 2 refurbed GPS's with out a single problem. Same warranty, this seller is an authorized Garmin distributor. Earl

Triple tree swap 1200 and 1300????
skydoc_17 replied to Holgi's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Holgi, Welcome to the site by the way! I would be willing to send you the entire front end of a 1986 MKII VR which would allow you to run the 4 piston calipers (or R1 Calipers for that matter) from the MKII's. This would include the triple tree, both fork tubes, both lowers and the anti-dive units. What ever the actual cost would be, thats what you would pay. Let me know if I can help you with this issue. Oh, and one more thing your bike would be one of the few in Europe with the 4 piston calipers in the front. (Braggin' Rights) Check out this link: [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27170]VR to R1 Brake Swap Part 1! - VentureRider.Org[/ame] Earl -
Hey Emery, Last December, I bought this 1986 VR for only $800.00 The person that sold it was trying to get some money together and was desperate. (I have attached a pic below) The point I am trying to make is if you can wait till spring, you will see more offers and better prices. From now till Feb. is the time of the year when people like me shop around for people who absolutely NEED to get rid of their bikes, offer them a very small amount and may have to do it 2 or 3 times before finding someone who needs the money so badly they have no choice. I sold that 86'VR in late May for $3800.00 with some work done to it. If you can afford it, hold on to it till spring. Earl

What's behind the rubber plug???

Hey Dan, The ONLY reason you saw that rear is cause you have a First Gen. Too! Earl -
What's behind the rubber plug???
skydoc_17 replied to Woody2shoes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Woody, I have attached a pic below of a final drive with a red arrow pointing to what I Think you are talking about. ( If I am wrong, tell me where to look!) Yamaha uses this final drive housing for a number of shaft drive bikes with different gear ratios and different shock mounting configurations. Your bike has a "Mono-Shock" and the shock mount is built into the swing arm. On a bike like the VMAX, Yamaha uses a pair of shocks and the bottom of one of the shocks would mount in this hole. As you can see in the pic, there is no hole in this final drive because it is from an 05' FJR1300 (a Mono-Shock bike) If your final drive has a plug then it was drilled and tapped for a stud that a shock would mount to. You Didn't say what you wanted to use this hole for but I do want to mention that what ever you bolt on there NEEDS to be something that will be solely mounted to the final drive because this hole, like the final drive itself, is in a state of constant up and down motion when the bike is being ridden. In other words DO NOT attach a trailer hitch, strut that goes to the frame or any other rigid piece of metal to this hole because you will effectively make your bike a rigid frame scoot, stopping all movement of the rear suspension. If this is not what you were talking about...........Well never mind! Earl -
Hey Mark, U-Haul rents a trailer just for hauling motorcycles! I have attached two pics of it hauling a First Gen. and a Second Gen. The trailer is low to the ground so it is an easy load, it tows great, I am able to haul an 800 lb. bike with my V6 truck easily. And at $14.95 a day, you would be hard pressed to beat the deal. They even offer "Load Insurance" if for any reason something happens to the trailer or anything you are hauling, it's paid for!I use this trailer to haul bikes to and from my shop all the time. (30 plus uses) Only had a problem one time and the Ins. Covered it completely. Check out the pics. If you book your Res. in advance, they will bring one in for you if they don't have one there. Even if you rent the larger trailer, Get the Ins. for the peace of mind. Hope this helps, Earl

Hey Jimbob, There is one on Ebay, it has a guarantee, Ebay item # 120477605253 Hope this helps, Earl -
I have attached two pics of the Double Banjo Splitter Adapter Bracket. It is mounted with two "Shock Absorber" mounts so you don't get any pulsing from the brake lines when you grab a handful of front brake. Earl
