Broke a *%&!##$ Valve cover bolt
skydoc_17 replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Dan, I am very sorry to hear this, could you please give us a few more details. Is it on the right side or left? Did just the head break off? Can you see any way to get the Valve Cover off over the stud? Fill us in and we will see if we can't get a game plan together. Earl -
Hey Mark, First off, I wanted to say you are very lucky that you have such an honest Dealer, Most are not. With all of the money you just saved by NOT having your 12,000 mile service done, purchase a Manometer (CarbTune) so you can do your own Carb. Sync's. and heck you could even spring for a nice Motorcycle Jack and get that puppy off the floor when you work on it, AND STILL have $500.00 in the bank! SilverT had some great ideas for maint. you can do for yourself and will prolong the life of your scoot. (especially with that new jack!) Just my thoughts, Earl

Hey Jonas, Your Carbs. arrived today! It's a very nice looking set and I am sure you will be happy. They are in a big box, setting next to another big box that is holding your VMAX camshafts! I wish you could be here, it's like Christmas! I noticed that you did not have a set of Valve Cover Gaskets on your "Wish List". Before you buy new VMAX Valve Springs, I wanted to let you know that I am now searching for them. Earl Earl

Pipes, Carbs, Airbox 08 Venture
skydoc_17 replied to Reed's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hey Reed, First off, welcome to the site! Now, about those MPG's. If power is not your problem, then moving MORE air thru the engine and enlarging the size of the jets to allow MORE fuel to enter the engine IS NOT going to give you better gas milage! Far be it for me to tell ANYONE NOT to put some excellent safty chrome on their bikes. The new pipes are going to be shiny and louder, the air filters are going to be *****in' but if you want to get your milage around 40 MPG where it should be then spend your money on a Manometer (Carbtune) learn how to use it, and Sync. your Carbs. If you are running hi-test gas then stop it. Check your tire pressure every time you ride and if you are only running 32 to 34 PSI in your tires then air them up a bit more. Lastly, if you are "chugging" around town in fifth gear under 55 MPH then stop that too! Unless you are sitting at a stop light, 3000 to 3500 is as low as you want to go on your tach. (oops! I forgot, Cassette player, no Tach! MY Bad!) anyway, if the mirrors are vibrating while you are riding around then your RPM is too low. Keep in mind that this engine is not a twin, it needs to see RPM's to function properly. I like to say, "Ride it like you just robbed a bank" and you might not see an increase in fuel economy until you Sync. those Carbs........but you will have a LOT more fun riding! Earl -
Hey Dan, When ever I take a set of Carbs. apart I pull the cover to the cut off valves and check for two things, one is corrosion on the spring from moisture collecting in the cavity where the shut off valve sits and the other thing I look for is a tear, rip or puncture in the Diaphragm itself. Sometimes you only need to replace one or two, I don't usually replace the entire set unless the person I am doing the Carbs. for is really rich or really picky. I've never had one I have visually inspected give me any trouble after the Carbs. were put back on the bike. The same goes for you Dano, if Sirius wont give you the discount, let me know. Earl
-
Try Sirius Consolidated Inc., (The folks we get the regular Carb. Diaphragms from) Tell them you are with VentureRider.ORG and they should give you a discount. I think they are in the $15.00 Range. If they will not give you a discount, PM me, I have a business account with them. The Sirius Part number is 88-Y001. Hope this helps, Earl

It looks a little smallish but I bet it would be a LOT cheaper than a Can Am. I have attach a few pics of what YAMAHA ought to do to keep up with the Can Am. Now THAT'S a three wheeler! Earl

MKII Headlight for my MKI
skydoc_17 replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Gary, I have an 86'VR and have already sold the headlight but the framework is still there. This bike was not in a wreck, and the framework is in excellent condition. I am pretty sure the MKII adjuster assembly is there as well. If interested, PM me. Earl -
YOU GUYS....GETTA ROOM! Earl

Hey Chris, There is a product called "KIT" in a yellow bottle for $2.95 at Wally-Mart that is a scratch remover that works REALLY WELL. I used it on my 87'VR windshield when I first got the bike and it pretty much made it like new. Now, don't get me wrong, there was some "elbow grease" involved, but for $2.95, I had more time than money, if you get my meaning. An added bonus is the fact that the Kit scratch remover puts a wax coating on the windshield and the water beads off nicely. Hope this helps, Earl

Hey Mike, Happy new Year to you. If we are talking about the "scoop" looking plastic part that covers the oil filter then I am pretty sure I have a black one from an 86'VR with the tab broken on the left side. It's yours for the cost of the shipping. PM me if you are interested. Hope this helps, Earl

planning a ride from cincinnati to gettysburg
skydoc_17 replied to ronhenry4's topic in Watering Hole
Hey Ron, I live east of Pittsburgh Right off of the Turnpike, you and your friends are always welcome to stop by, we could put some dogs and burgers on the grill, check you bikes out, and make a day of it. There are Hotels near by and I have camping space and a spare room and a cozy couch to offer. I can take you from 400 feet above sea level to 2800 ft. in 12 minutes, we have the Amish and some great riding in the area. We have the Johnstown Flood Memorial, the 911 Memorial as well. You can stop in on the way over or the way back. It would be my pleasure to meet you. Earl- 11 replies

I would love to see Paul Tuttle and David Letterman do the old Abbot and Costello Bit, "Who's On First"! I think it would be a riot. Paul Sr. is as blunt as a hammer head! Reminds me of my Dad. On a personal note, I live in a state (Pa.) where riders get to choose to wear a helmet or not. As many of you know, I ride my bike to the limits that it will perform....regularly. I count on my equipment to function the way it should, and if it doesn't, I count on my helmet to do it's job. I always wear a helmet, and it has saved my life more than once. I still think as adults we should be able to make that decision for ourselves, after all, we get to choose weather or not we will ride a motorcycle! (just between you and me, I don't even like it when Jean tells me what shirt to wear!) My thoughts, for what they are worth, Earl

Hey Tom and Taters, Both Jean and I were sorry to hear about Casey. During my visit to your home, I remember Casey being such a cute little spud and thought how lucky you were to have him. I am sure he is in a better place now, with no pain, and plenty of sunshine, running and playing. My wish for You and Taters is that your next pet will bring as much joy to your life as Casey did. I have a Yamaha Dealer 1.5 miles from my "little shop by the creek" here in Pa. and if a bike is more then 10 years old.....they send it to me. I am happy for the work but it must be tough for most people with older bikes to find an honest mechanic to do work for them. I would think in this economy, dealers would be jumping at the chance to bring more work in. I must admit that my 87'VR is older than the mechanic at the local Yamaha dealer. That might be part of the problem. This looks like another indication of our "throw away" society.Sad, but true. It's a shame you don't live closer, I charge $30.00 an hour and you could watch all you want! Earl

Hey Eddie, I'm in for a pair as well. Great job on making this happen! Earl

Hey Clint, Try contacting them. Perhaps they forgot to put the O'Rings in the shipment, or maybe they are a seperate part number and you need to order them as well. Just a thought, Earl

Hey Vic, Happy New Year to you! And what a way to start off the new year than to roll on the throttle of one of the finest bikes ever produced. Both you and I have been around the block once (or twice) and it's not every day that you find something that makes you say "WOW" Well my friend, you have stumbled across one of the best kept secrets that Yamaha ever had. I wish you many, many miles of excellent riding and of course memories. Perhaps we will get the chance to dust a few wanna' be's together some day. I look forward to it, Earl

I spent the night at Big Tom's house when I went to NY for the meet and eat at Pioneer Motorsports and in the middle of the night I woke up to this mountain of a man hunkering over me with that BIG Ice Cream Eating Grin on his face! I felt like a double scoop of "Rocky Road"!!! The therapy is going well for me as well, I hardly wake up in the middle of the night screaming any more! I have a whole new respect for Taters now! What a GOOD SPORT she is! That would be like living with a Sasquatch! Earl

DavePa, requested more pics, so here are some I have of the 86'VR during assembly Enjoy, Earl

I had the great pleasure to help a fellow VR.ORG member add a few custom pieces to his VR recently and I wish I could say I had a hand in fabbing up the body on this 86'VR but I would be lying!! Please enjoy these pics of one of the most original VR's I have ever seen. By the way, this bike belongs to Steve Crossley and he is a bit shy about braggin' about his scoot, BUT I'M NOT! Enjoy. Earl

Thanks to Gary for bringing an important point to the forfront that because of the difference in design of the First Gen. MKI and MKII final drives the "dip stick" is a must have item on the MKI but not on the MKII. Thanks again Gary, Earl -
I got a 26, over thought a few. Earl
