  1. Hey Gary, How about a power windshield raiser/lowerer, or a power windshield vent opener. OR a power seat adjuster. OR a power center stand like the NASCAR vehicles have. Just thinking out loud! Earl
  2. Hey Bob, Dingy (Gary) is working on an adapter bracket that would allow you to install the 6 piston late model R1 Calipers on the front of your Second Gen. You might ask him how that is coming. Barregner makes a 6 piston caliper that is a direct bolt on, but at $1200 a set, you may want to wait on Gary. If you can find an older set of R1 "Gold Dot" Front Calipers with the Aluminum Pistons in them, that would be a great addition to your trike. They would be direct bolt on as well. No matter what you put up front, you need to ditch that "tinker toy" front brake splitter you currently have on your bike. Earl
  3. Hey Dan, A few months ago, I got a Blue 87 Standard as a parts bike here at the shop. Every time I look at that bike, I think of the fun time we had a few years ago. I hope the road is treating you well, my friend. Please send my best regards to your lovely wife, and Jean says "Hey". This link will take you to the NEW Needle Shim Mod I offer now. The new shims are Nylon, are lighter, and are a refinement of the original S.S. shims that were installed on the Main Jet Needle years ago. I custom machine these nylon shims on my lathe. Here's the link: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3770&title=first-gen1983-to-1993-vr-needle-shim-mod-kit-21&cat=22 I sure would love to see you at Don's this year, It always brings back fond memories. Earl
  4. Hey JB, I screwed up, I sent you the "Good Nylon" shims by mistake! I meant to send you a set of rusty old cast iron ones I had laying around. I must be getting old! You did good JB, give those Diaphragms a bit more break in time, and you might even see 45 MPG when the dust settles. Which reminds me, make sure you have a clean air filter, a clogged air filter will slow the wind up on these motors. I wish I could get 5 extra MPG on my truck! Congrats on a job well done! Earl
  5. Hey Randy, There is no need to ground the brush plate on the 4 brush starter. Yamaha finally figured this one out! Slap her in, and go for a ride! Earl
  6. Hey JB, I can honestly say that it took a few thousand miles for my 87'VR to "Break In" the Carb. Diaphragms after I changed them. I was wondering if you used the Nylon Needle Shims, or did you replace the stock Nylon Needle Shims with S.S. washers? I have seen in the past the combination of a new set of after market Carb. Diaphragms, and the weight of S.S. washers replacing the Needle Shims on the Carb. Sliders really slows down the slider action, which makes you twist the throttle all that much harder, resulting in poor gas mileage. As those Diaphragms loosen up, you should see another mile or two better MPG's on your scoot. As far as the Color Tune Goes, I know many people that have them, but because the spark plug hole is so deep in the well of the cylinder head, that tool will most likely spend most of it's life in the bottom of your tool box! I am ALWAYS impressed when a VR owner takes the time to really "Fine Tune" their scoot. Because of the many mods on my 87'VR, I have "fiddled" with my Carbs. a hundred times. Not many have the patience for that. I commend you for your patience, and the resulting gas mileage improvement! Just in case someone else would like better gas mileage yourself: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3770&title=first-gen1983-to-1993-vr-needle-shim-mod-kit-21&cat=22 Earl
  7. Hey Matt, It sounds like you did your homework very well. If this bike has the Ventureline Driver Backrest, And the Cassette works, (Take a tape with you) and NONE of the items on the check list are an issue, then this bike is worth $3250.00 TOPS. If this bike doesn't have the backrest, the cassette doesn't work, the brake fluid is cola colored, the water pump elbow has the gash in it, and you can't see the oil level because the window is dirty, then this is a $2000.00 bike Tops. If he will not budge on the price, then try "walking away". You can still call him in a day or two and give him what he wants. You are buying a motorcycle during the worst possible time of the year for buying a motorcycle. I would be prepared to spend a bit more for this bike, but NOT $3500.00 If it had 38,000 miles on it, maybe. Keep your cool, don't be over excited about the bike, and you should do fine. Go get um', Tiger! Earl
  8. You Two GET a Room, For Pete's Sake! Earl and Jean
  9. Hey Rosie, Welcome to VR.ORG! The two sets of Jardine Exhausts I have here both have "Jardine" engraved right into them. Jack is correct, if the exhausts are unmarked, and have the welded extension on them, they are MAC's. Earl
  10. Hey Ty, The springs you are showing in your pic appear to be Progressive, but at 17 3/4 inches, these are the correct length for the Yamaha R6 motorcycle. (a 500 pound motorcycle) The length of the Progressive Fork Springs for the Venture Royale are 21 inches. (an 800 pound motorcycle) You can see a pic of the correct Progressive Fork Springs here: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3768&title=first-gen1983-1993-progressive-fork-springs-21&cat=22 Replacement of these springs is the only cure. As you stated, you have very little travel, and the springs currently in your bike are not rated for the weight of your Motorcycle. Actually, you are very lucky that these springs didn't bottom out in a sweeper turn, or a panic stop, and throw you over the handle bars. (thru the windshield) It is your good fortune you discovered this error BEFORE an accident. Buy a lotto ticket! Earl
  11. Hey Don, Like You, I tried my best to teach all three of my sons the things in life that I thought were important. Some of these lesson's were hard learned by myself, and I wanted to spare my boys the pain I went thru to figure these lessons out. I visited my oldest son out in Southern California a while back, he was getting married, and he told me he needed "to get something off his chest". Like you, I worried, and I ran down a mental list of ALL the "Dubious" things I did as a young man, wondering which one of those issues I would be faced with. I braced myself for the worst, and told myself that no matter what confession my son, my first born seed of my loins, would share with me, I would be there for him, and reassure him that I loved him always, and together, we would work thru this, no matter what. When my son and I had moved to a quiet area, away from everyone else, I began to chew my lower lip. I was quiet, I allowed my son to compose his words, I didn't speak, I allowed him the time to bear his soul to me. I have to admit, I wasn't prepared for what he said next. He was looking at the floor, shuffling his feet, when he raised his head, our eyes met, I tried to look into his eyes with as much compassion as I could muster. He was speaking softly at first, I leaned in a bit, to hear him better. I placed my hand on his shoulder, in an effort to comfort him. (or was I bracing myself for the shock to come!) He was speaking in a wisper.... I strained to make out what he was saying. He muttered, "Dad, I love you, and I know you have always been a Chevy guy," The room started to spin, a lump formed in my throat, I suddenly developed "tunnel vision", my legs got weak. Suddenly he was speaking much louder, he threw his shoulders back, and raised his chin high, the words burned in my ears, BUT DAD, I'M A FORD MAN!" Where did I go wrong, I BLAME HIS MOTHER! Thank You Don, for giving me the courage to share this issue with the group. Let the healing begin! Earl
  12. Hey Brian, Have a look at the First Gen. HO Stator and R/R Upgrade Kit I offer in the Classifieds. In the kit, you get the High Output Stator, The Solid State MOSFET Regulator/Rectifier,(NO diodes like the stock R/R) and ALL of the gaskets you need to do this project properly. I even have a kit for the Second Gens. Here's the link: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3853&title=first-genhigh-output-stator-and-high-output-regulator-2frectifier-kit-21&cat=22 If anyone has questions, or you are a Second Gen. owner with a charging issue, please feel free to PM me. Earl
  13. Hey John, Here is some info on stator's that you may find useful. I copied and pasted from a thread that was going around last week. Earl I have found a local AMERICAN MADE Company that makes the High Output Stator and High Output R/R I offer in the Classifieds. The R/R is a DIRECT Electronic Copy of the High Output Shindengen MOSFET Regulator Rectifier that was originally offered in the group buy. I offer the Stator and R/R for the Second Gen.'s as well. Both the Stator and the R/R have a 1 year warranty and as it is with EVERY item I offer in the Classifieds, I personally stand behind these two products. In the Ad I have in the Classifieds, I offer the Stator and the R/R as a matched set. The addition of a High Output Stator run thru a stock R/R does not yield the full benefits of the High Output Stator. The addition of a High Output MOSFET Regulator Rectifier powered by a stock Stator has even less electrical value. Not only do you get a matched set of components in the kit I offer, you also get every gasket you will need to complete this project, with USPS Insured Priority Mail shipping Included in the USA. This project falls into the "I only want to do the job once" category, in my opinion. So I suggest you choose your components wisely. Here is a link to the kit I offer: http://www.venturerider.org/classifi...-kit-21&cat=22 If you have any questions about your charging system, or if you are a Second Gen. owner and are wondering if you already have the High Output Charging system on your bike, please feel free to contact me. Earl
  14. While these two items aren't "Official Accessories" they certainly do qualify as "unique". The first set of pics is of my hand made GPS mount, using the mirror mount that is on the right side brake master cylinder. (that never gets used) The second set of pics is of the "lazered" back lit side cover inserts that add a nice "glow" to the side of my 87'VR at night. Earl

  16. Before you get crazy, and rip the Carbs. off your bike, I use a cleaning method for the Carbs. while they are still on the bike. If ANYONE is interested, feel free to PM me. Earl
  17. They Probably won't work, but it will be fun to watch! Have one of his Harley buddies hold the business end of a spark plug while he cranks the beast. Check the fuel filter, If it's brown, it's been around, too long. Check the main fuse, and the ignition fuse. My guess is one, or both of the coils are toast. It happens a lot. The rectifier on these bikes is not much better than a string between two cans. Unless he saw fire out the tail pipe, or there is a piston hanging out the side of one of the jugs, it is not getting fuel, or spark. Period. Check for spark first, if good there, try some starting fluid in the Carb. If it lights off, then figure out why the fuel from the tank is not getting to the engine. If my bike blew up every time I hit 90MPH, I'd have three dead bikes in the front yard, JUST TODAY! Earl
  18. Hey Jeff, That Differential is vented, and I would say that this rear end is getting "wound tighter" by you V4 engine then it ever did in a car. You need to find out what car this rear end came out of and then search for a manual to see how full it needs to be AND the type of oil that goes in it. It would be a very expensive mistake to put the wrong type of oil in that rear end just to save a few bucks. I would also check the Valve Covers to see if oil is weeping from them, and blowing back on the Differential Cover. Lastly, check the oil level sight glass for the engine, (on the right side of the bike, down by the water pump, if the oil level of the engine is above half way, (overfilled) then engine oil could be leaking past the seal for the drive shaft yoke, and getting on the Differential cover. It doesn't take much oil to collect a LOT of dirt. My guess is Differential Lube from the vent is collecting on the Differential Cover. BUT it is wise to check the other items as well. I keep a small notebook on my bike for particulars about the items I have done mods on because the regular service manual is no longer correct for the mods I have done. Make a note of the origin of the rear end, the fill level, and the type of gear oil for next time. Earl
  19. That seal should be PRESSED in, if you try to beat it in with a hammer, you'll be buying a few, usually. I would suggest you add the Thermostat Housing Cover to the list. The Thermostat Housing is Metal, the cover is plastic. With only two screws holding it down, sometimes it seals, and sometimes it doesn't. (the plastic warps) The two metric cap screws are usually rusted up pretty good as well, I always replace them. I usually don't replace the Yamaha Thermostat, it is an excellent quality porduct. Certainly not with a "made in china" one. For what it's worth, I won't rebuild a water pump here at the shop any more, Frying a motor over the cost of a new water pump is not worth it, In my opinion. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck With This Project! Earl
  20. USPS Priority Mail Shipped right to your front door: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3876&title=deka-etx-18l-sealed-agm-battery-21&cat=22 This Battery Icon Bypass Lead will stop the red light from blinking: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3766&title=first-genbattery-icon-bypass-lead-kit-21&cat=22 Earl
  21. The Two reasons that I would swap a VMAX or Venture to chain drive would be, #1 the loss of power from the Final Drive, and #2 Once you reach the 150+ Horse Power threshold, the stock drive shaft and Final Drive can't handle the extra power any more! Usually, when the Vmax boys hop up their VMAX's, the next thing to fail is the Clutch, then the drive shaft or final drive. If you wanted to install a Yamaha V4 engine in a small buggy or quad, a chain drive would be the way to go, but frankly, any of the inline, big bore bike motors would give you an easier install, (they are already chain drive) and gobs more power. To install a chain drive on an RSV, you would not be able to use the stock swing arm any more, and an extended swing arm would put the rear tire beyond the rear fender. Check with John at PCW, "crazy" is normal to this motorhead! He's "Da Man" when it comes to all things VMAX. Earl
  22. Hey Jeff, It takes a single VR Carb. about 21/2 hours to drain the gas tank on a First Gen. VR. Because the main fuel line from the fuel pump to the fuel rail on top of the Carbs. is higher than the Float Bowls, once fuel starts flowing from a worn float needle, the siphon effect will basically drain the entire tank. Especially if, like me, you leave the fuel petcock in the reserve position. Because there are no local gas stations that sell fuel without Ethanol, I have been draining the tank on my First Gen. and putting fresh gas in the tank when spring comes. Looks like you are doing the same thing, weather you meant to or not! With 4 plus gallons of gas leaking thru the floorboards of your shed, I would be willing to bet that there are NO rabbits, or grass living under your shed. You might not want to sneak in there for a smoke in the near future! Earl
  23. Hey Herb, I too do not Sync. my Carbs. at idle. Since I spend most of my riding time somewhat above idle, this is where I set them. As long as the bike doesn't stall at a light, I could care less what vacuum it pulls at idle. A good place to set your Carbs would be the RPM's that you would be at, going 65 MPH in 5th gear. (3600 I think, mine is a lot different with the FJR final drive, and VMAX rear wheel) try setting the Sync level there, and see how it idles after the adjustment. Costs nothing but time, my friend. Earl
  24. I would be more concerned with what gear oil you are using in that final drive! It is impossible to overfill the final drive on a First Gen. MKII Motorcycle. Some oil mist around the vent is normal. Anytime you have oil collecting around an opening, dirt and dust is not going to be to far behind. Yamaha makes a fine Hypoid gear oil, I use the BelRay Products. The final drive is vented so internal pressure doesn't force the gear oil out of the seals. Changing the vent is not going to stop the oil mist from exiting the final drive, after all, it is a "vent". Earl
  25. I have seen the MKII VR Electric Anti-Dives go for a few bucks on Ebay in the past, this extra money would offset the money spent on the Block Off Plates. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3776&title=first-genmkii-vr-s-santi-dive-block-off-plates-21&cat=22 I haven't seen people flocking to buy the MKI VR Anti-Dives ANYWHERE, but what a pleasure it is to bleed your brakes on your MKI VR WITHOUT that line from the Anti-Dives connected to both front calipers! http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3777&title=first-genmki-vr-anti-dive-s-sblock-off-plates-21&cat=22 Plus, fresh fork oil in the front ends of these 800 pound motorcycles will breathe new life into the handling of your bike. If you are interested in the Block Off Plates, and don't have the Progressive Fork Springs, Here ya' go. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3768&title=first-gen1983-1993-progressive-fork-springs-21&cat=22 Earl
