thanks for the insight... i just wasn't comfortable with see air bubble during the bleed - i couldn't seem to move any fluid out of the reservoir by using the mighty vac, so i choose to do it the old fashioned method and it seems to have turned out fine, i'll know better when i ride it. i do indeed need pads and was putting them off until i was done with fall riding (which is close) i got 21K miles on the original pads, is that fairly typical. i'm going with the EBC HH Sintered pads front & rear - will be getting hold of SKYDOC soon to order them.

thanks again.....i got it done. really not that bad doing it the old way but would have been easier with help on the left front. my front brake lever is much less spongy than before. i used the DOT 5.1 fluid (non silicone). now i'm wondering if you can bleed the clutch similar to this.....i'm thinking you can begin to put pressure on the clutch lever and crack the bleeder and do it like the brakes??
-
thanks.....someone else recently told me the same.....let me ask you did you leave the front reservoir lid off when you bled fronts the old way or place it back on between bleeds??
-
did the rear the old fashioned way and it seems fine .....guess i'll try the front the same way.....thanks for the inputs.

got the bracket off and accessed the lid - removed it and topped off....placed mighty vac on bleeder got some vacuum - loosened the bleeder and got a small amount of fluid and air bubbles as well...can't seem to get fluid to drain from reservoir. is there any reason this can't be done the old fashioned way .....place a tube over bleeder, place other end of tube in submerged brake fluid....pump and hold brake, now release bleeder and pedal goes down, now tighten bleeder and repeat until you've flushed new fluid into that brake line ??

trying to bleed the brakes - starting at rear - i cannot remove the reservoir lid due to a molded plastic piece in the way - i do see an allen screw which appears to hold it in place - must i remove that screw to access the reservoir lid?? see pic...............

thankfully they were able to operate on your fathers aortic aneurysm (my 86 yr. dad had the same condition but was inoperable) - you & your family have been lifted up in prayer.

was checking over my bike and noticed a drop of coolant on top of the rubber boot of clutch bleeder ... took off the fin (it seems tight before removing) and saw a drop of coolant at the rubber washer. the bike is an 07 RSTD, i have put on 21k miles. can i silicone a small washer on the tab on the inside of fin to place additional pressure on the rubber washer or should i replace the washer - if so do you lose enough coolant to warrant refilling the radiator?

my wife & i were coming home from a beautiful ride on the Blue Ridge last Saturday. after we stopped for a late lunch, my wife wanted to go into one of her favorite department stores.....as i waited outside a man and his wife stopped to talk to me about my RSTD.....said he used to own a '97 TD and what a great bike it was..... he said i could get a set of 'front' turn signals from an '04 and earlier RSTD and mount them on the rear in place of the original turn signals...which would provide a running light as well as a turn signal .....he said the older fronts lights had an 1157 bulb and that i would need to tap into the red wire to make the running light portion work...has anyone done this mod??

Don't Try this Kiddies. Not nice Border Guards.
naturbar replied to mrich12000's topic in Watering Hole
i think the guy and his wife were hoodooed either way they answered the 1st guards question. what if the husband and wife gave a different list of store they were going to visit...to those guards that would be tantamount to them lying and by telling the truth and saying they did not know which stores they were going to patronize, well we heard the results of that. some people just totally submit to an authority figure (may be the way they were brought up) while others feel it teir right to question. my personality would probably have gotten me into the same trouble as that poor guy and his wife. those who never question authority may be a prime target for a police state. i pity that couple and hope the guards some day get the same type of treatment. -
you are indeed fortunate....never try to start bike if fuel running out of tailpipe...check this out.............. Hydrolock From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/72/Bent_connecting_rod_1.JPG/220px-Bent_connecting_rod_1.JPG http://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/magnify-clip.png Bent connecting rod after Hydrolock http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d4/Bent_connecting_rod_2.JPG/220px-Bent_connecting_rod_2.JPG http://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/magnify-clip.png Same connecting rod, turned 90° Hydrolock (a shorthand notation for either hydraulic lock or hydrostatic lock) is an abnormal condition of an internal combustion engine in which an incompressible liquid, commonly water, has been introduced into one or more cylinders, causing immobilization or damage. Hydrolock can occur because an internal combustion engine must compress a volume of gas in order to operate, while most common liquids that could enter an internal combustion engine do not compress. If liquid is introduced at a volume greater than the volume of the combustion chamber at its minimum (top of the piston's stroke), the piston cannot complete its travel. Either the engine must stop rotating or a mechanical failure will occur. Hydrolock is relatively common when driving through floods, either where the water is above the level of the air intake or the vehicle's speed is excessive, creating a tall bow wave. A vehicle fitted with a Cold air intake mounted low on the vehicle will be especially vulnerable to hydrolocking when being driven through standing water or heavy precipitation. Another cause can include a head gasket failure, which may allow the radiator coolant to leak into the combustion chamber. Fuel entering one or more cylinders in liquid form due to carburetor flooding or other abnormal operating conditions can cause an engine to hydrolock, although this is relatively rare. Small boats with outboard engines and PWCs tend to ingest water simply because they run in and around it. During a rollover or when a wave washes over the craft its engine can hydrolock, though severe damage is rare due to the special air intakes and low inertia of small marine engines.[1]

here is a great example of woman talk....... my wife wanted me to paint our dining room a different color...i asked what color are you thinking of....she says i want to carry the color in from the kitchen...i say fine and she hands me the color swath....i'm off to walmart to buy the paint...i get home, spent two days prepping and cutting in (i used the kitchen paint that was left over)... this morning i tell her that i will have her project completed by the time she gets home...she says awesome....as she was fixing to leave for work she says, you know the paint you bought is a shade lighter than the kitchen.....say what - you mean i did all the cutiing in with the wrong color - she said she told me it was going to be a shade lighter........ well even if i'm right i'm wrong, so get the paint brush and ladder and do it over......
