Ask how long it's been since the belts were changed, was the carb work ever done to eliminate the flat spot from the factory and how does the transmission shift? These are ( in my mind) the critical things for a pre 2001 Wing.Trans mission and carb issues were fixed by then. Belts..... well that is just an ongoing maintenance item. Easy to fix just a little time consuming. I have heard more then one wing rider say that they liked their 1500 better then their 1800.

Started in 1964 on a rented Yamaha 80 step thru dirt bike. Went to Argentina and one of the people I worked with had a beautiful DKW 200 two stroke. We road it everywhere.Back in the States in 1968 bought a WELL used 1956 AJS. It lasted 30 days then blew up. Spent the next 2 years trying to get it back together, stumbled on a great deal on a brand new 1969 Norton Fastback. Proceeded to put 25000 miles on it sold it( big mistake) and bought a 1972 R 750/5 with the Butler Avon fairing and Calafia bags. 30000 miles later Sold it, next Suzuki RL250, Montesa 250 King Scorpion,Yamaha SR 500,anniversary Triumph 750,BSA Rocket 3, then 1983 Venture,1986 Venture Royale,1988,Venture Royal Anniversary(still have) 1988 Venture Royal, 2008 RSTD (wrecked) 2008 RSVS (wrecked),1990 Goldwing Trike, 2012 Spyder RTS-L.Also have a 1968 BSA 500 Royal Star and a 1971 Montesa 175 Texas Scrambler.

Have you ever had thoughts of hanging it up on riding?
Pegasus1300 replied to Eck's topic in Watering Hole
Most of us here are old enough and have ridden long enough and far enough that we have nothing to prove to anybody. I went down twice in 2011 and was forced to quit for awhile and that was good. I looked around and decided I wasn't thru riding yet but 2 wheels were not going to work for me anymore. I found a trike rode it for 4 years and sold it this summer to buy a Spyder. That thing is so much fun.My point is sometimes you just have to step back for awhile.Maybe you find you're not through but you have to change direction. Maybe you are through and its just time to move on. Life changes and we change too. Sometimes we get to bring our old friends with us. Take your time ride if you feel like it ,don't if you don't. We are all gonna get to this point sometime. So chin up it'll work out just fine what ever happens -
So if I remember right their charge is $100+shipping both ways+any parts. They will call you and talk to you about it. http://www.sierra-mc.com

When you go to buy your oil be sure to look at the list of accepted retailers. I did not see Wal Mart on the list but K Mart and Target are. So is NAPA.,individual can or 5qt bottles. The requirements are 5 qts, any way you get'em. If you only buy oil you get a $12 dollar rebate.

Steering Wanders
Pegasus1300 replied to ToyOdie's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
+3 its in the steering head races. If you can get the front wheel off the ground you will probably find you have play in the steering head. Grab and pull back and forth, if it moves that is your problem. -
What is your problem? And did you know that Sierra Electronics can repair them?

At two thousand Dollars it better be able to rethink it's own packing:)

I still have the ones that came on my 87. I never take them off when I traveled with her. I keep a tire gauge, sunburn cream, nail clippers black tape, hand cream, gloves, you get the picture. I also have a tank bag for camera,cd player, maps, guides, and a bag that fits between the handlebars for snacks gum, earplugs, rags. There is also a bag on the luggage rack for rain suits waterproof gloves,cleaner/polish and rags. Although I have traveled on motorcycle for 50 years I never had anything stolen or as far as I can tell even bothered.Yes I do take normal precautions I take really valuable stuff inside and everything else is out of sight but that's about it.

I am watching the news and they are reporting on another motorcycle death in Utah. So far there have been 24 deaths this year. Last year we had 45 deaths, a new record set during a statewide push for zero fatalities. Amazingly enough 72% of those fatalities in 2014 were due to rider error. SEVENTY TWO PERCENT.The one reported tonight was a rider on Wolf Creek Pass ( a favorite road with lots of curves) who crossed the yellow line and went head on into an oncoming truck. Take a rider course(again).Wear the gear.Practice the safety rules and knowledge and skills you already have. Learn your bike, maintain your bike,do some of the work yourself,be careful out there. As we get older our ability to maintain situational awareness decreases. Younger riders may not have done enough practice to have developed it. I am sorry for the rant here but I just cringe every time I hear the news or read about one of you injured or killed. Access where you are in your skills and do what you have to improve and be safe.

Is 77k too many miles
Pegasus1300 replied to volmann's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I personally tend to agree with your friend. Get yourself a can of B12 spray. Remove the air cleaner box( look in the tech section) Run the bike at just above idle and spray into every hole you can see. Also put a can of liquid B12 into the tank and run it. You may have to do this 2 or three times but it will clean it out. I have done this on an 83 and 86( just like yours and my 87 ( my favorite because mine is the Anniversary edition.) Also someone mentioned checking the idle setting. It should idle at 1000-1200 rpm. Your miss could be just a fouled sparkplug. -
that was a Rocket Three, the Triumph was called a Trident. Both names are still used by the current Triumph company. I had a Rocket Three really fun to ride, quite smooth and very fast. It handled so well .it was a joy to ride but those first couple of years of brakes were terrible.Even for the time.

Pegasus1300 replied to VanRiver's topic in Watering Hole
In 1986 I did buy the Venture Royale, but time has proven that the public thought the Gold Wing more desirable. -
