Disappointed with the 2010 RSV
Pegasus1300 replied to Deacon's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I don't mind the carburetors and the tape deck is just a minor annoyance. The fact that there has been no development and no significant marketing on this model for years is the thing that is scary.I don't think Yamaha really wants to do much with this series and will bale on it as soon as they can.Suzuki does not have a big touring bike and I can see Yamaha going that way too. Too bad, because after 25+ years personally with this engine I can't imagine another platform for a touring bike.It is IMHO the best engine out there. If you really need more displacement there are 1600 and 1800 cc kits for VMax's available that are very reliable.Yamaha designed this motor to be able to take displacement increases but they never did any. I would love to see some upgrades on this bike.An aluminum frame would be great.Suspension upgrades and maybe freshen up the styling a little with greater color choice. All in all I love the RSV/RSTD and would love to see some progress in the series instead of the terminal inattention that Yamaha has always lavished on it's big tourers as far back as the 1st gens. -
Aftermarket TCI available!
Pegasus1300 replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
To TVking63 You or someone asked when Yamaha went to the 1300 motor but I didn't see anyone reply to that. The 1986 model was the first with the 1300 motor. -
I have ridden 1st gens for over 300k and the only cable I have ever had show any wear is the pull one from the junction box to the carbs and I always carry a spare one of that.If it breaks you're doa until you fix it.If you feel the need go ahead and replace all 4 but I never did and never had a problem with the rest. The last time I bought a cable (#3) I think it was $20 at the local dealer.

If you need to remove whats left of finish there are strippers that will do a great job and not add to the work you have to do to refinish the bars.Go to Lowes or Home Depot and they will help you find the least caustic remover.I have done this many times on the fork legs as I love them to be as shiny as possible. The aluminum is very good quality and shines up well. Look in the tool section and and you will find everything you need to shine it up.You will need 3 wheels and 3 pastes. A cutting paste, a polishing paste and a finishing paste. Do not mix them on buffing wheels.Drill mounted wheels work just fine and are pretty cheap.Have fun and good luck. -
Take off the windshield and look at the front side of the dash cover. There is a big phillips screw there.Take it out and remove the cover. That should get you into anything else you need to get to the clamps so you can loosen them and rotate the bars as you wish. I haven't done this just what I have observed from looking things over.

usually when your pump leaks there is a shaft seal that is going out. Yes you can repair it by putting in a new seal and they are still available from Yamaha. If you still have the plastic impeller now would be a good time to change to the metal one.I am sure there are tech articles on the site here to help you with this.Pumps are in the same place 1st or 2nd gen, right side of the engine.

I have recently added a 28mm socket to my list. That is the size needed for the rear axel nut.It is in 3/8 drive as I already carry a 3/8 socket set,Allen keys and combination wrenches as well as #2 phillips, medium flat blade, pliers, knife, fuses, bulbs,Harley tire pump for suspension and tires, tire repair kit, electrical tape, connectors crimp and 3m,test light spare nuts bolts screw etc.All this except the tire pump fits in a 5x5x10 inch tool box in the left bag.Still have factory tools in the right bag but they are next to useless and I never get them out.

Com unit and CB are seperate entities so one will not necessarily effect the other. I am going by memory here but I think the com unit has seperate volume that is around another volume unit. It's been awhile since I used mine so will have to check. The whole in the left console is for the rider headset cable to pass thru. This should be coming up from the amplifier underneath. Tires: Avons seem to work great on the 1st gen I ran nothing else for 20 years and could corner to the pegs. Gas mileage:30 is very low tho I never did get better the 40 under normal type driving.Run some Sea Foam thru the gas tank or some Berryman's.I like it better and it is cheaper. You may want to do several tanks.Remove the carb tops and take out the diaphragms and hold them to the light and see if you have pin holes in them. There are directions in the tech pages for this. Plastic cracks:This is ABS plastic so go to the hardware store and get some ABS glue and put it on the backside of the cracks. If you can, find some scape ABS plastic and glue it on the backside as a re enforcement. If you can find someone who does it and want to spend the money go to a body shop that does plastic welding and have them welded. Class units:they all suffer from old/cold soldering joins.look with a magnifying glass and see the cracks then touch them with a pencil type soldering iron. My 87 is also a Goldie and I love it.It is my 3rd 1st gen.I have over 250k on various 1st gens and the only thing that makes them vulnerable is the age of the plastic. The rest of the bike is still up with modern bikes for sale today for thousands more.Enjoy -
What is your all time favorite Detective Show?
Pegasus1300 replied to Yama Mama's topic in Watering Hole
Oh wow where to start? Naked City or Peter Gun,both from the later fifties.I think James Coburn was in Naked City.Perry Mason is still a favorite and I watch every night. Mannix,Simon & Simon,Highway Patrol (Broderick Crawford),I led 3 Lives,The Untouchables (Robert Stack).Barnby Jones.Only Buddy Ebsen could pull off Jed and Barnaby and not make either one ridiculous. The Border Patrol ( I based my college education on that one Spanish and Law enforcement Major). This could go on and on.Magnum,Jag,Law and Order the original.Berretta was great loved the bird.Starsky and Hutch(couldn't have made it without Huggy Bear). Thre are so many more. But I guess if I could only have one all time favorite it would be Perry Mason:) -
I have an 87 VR. It is my 3rd 1stgen Venture and the best of the lot so far. There are no real issues with this bike other then the fact that it is 22 years old. A trip to Southern Mexico should be a blast on this bike and it will run on cheap low grade gas just fine (85 octane).Service is easy and there isn't anything you can't fix fairly easy if something does go bad. It's not like a Gold Wing that has to be totally disassembled to fix. Clutches,Alternators, most seals, etc are within easy reach. I have been riding 1st gens since 1986 and they are great bikes and very reliable. Things to check when buying: Does cruise control work? Not a major put off but nice to have and could be expensive to fix if you want it. I just use a throttle lock. CLASS unit: This is the compressor/suspension adjustment.Cold solder joins are usually the problem in a non working one and the cracks can be seen an fixed with a magnifying glass and a cheap soldering iron.Little or no skill required just patience. Again not a deal killer just something to be aware of.I am sure info on this fix is on here somewhere,if not try Venturers.Org Return cable from carbs to junction box(under left side fairing):Buy a spare one before you go.This is the cable that usually breaks and you are done until you get a new one or fix the old one. Rear wheel: lube the drive splines and the pins that go into the rubber dampners and the needle bearing in the rear wheel. There are instructions on this web site to do that.Normal maintainence item. Steering head bearings:normal maintainence item.check for flat spots.Info is on this website. I don't know how much experience you have in maintainence or what the bike you are looking at is like. These are just a few of the things I think one should look for when buying an old VR and/or taking off on a long trip in foreign lands. There are lots of other things to do and I am sure others here will give of their experience. Good luck, safe trip and SEND US PICTURES

Back in the day in was almost the same as it is now Pegasus. I rode horses before I could walk and the motorcycle was an extension of that. Pegasus was a flying horse in Greek mythology.

Tie-down location on RSTD?
Pegasus1300 replied to Shipper's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have found 2 points that seem to work well for the RSTD if you want to use a rear tie down and I always do. One is to use the passenger floorboard mount. This is a very sturdy piece of iron and solidly mounted. The other is just below the passenger floorboards. It is the black tube that is part of the bag mounts and is also a very sturdy piece of tube again well mounted. I like the passenger mounts best cause it gives a better angle. -
First ride on my Kumho C/T today 8/15
Pegasus1300 replied to FL-Venture-Rider's topic in The Darksiders
as a tire company's ad once said "it's time to retire" and I going to go to a c/t. My question is this:the c/t's are all radials but the regular tires on our bikes are not.Is there any problem with that? Those of you who have someone mount your tire are you going to a cycle shop or a car tire shop for mounting?BTW I am riding an 08 RSTD. -
anyone interested in some diamondr saddlebag light bars?

Front pad life....
Pegasus1300 replied to bugfish69's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My 08 RSTD has over 25000 on it and I am still on the factory pads and they seem to have plenty of life left in them. -
comes up blocked for me as well. I use Firefox but will try IE.

I have been using the Valvolene 20-50 regular oil in my 1st gen Ventures and now in my RSTD.I have had 3 1st generation.milage on the 83 was 105K, the 86 went to 165k and I am still putting miles on the 87 at 62k.Only the clutch in the 86 ever needed to be replaced and that was at 80k.The 87 clutch is still doing fine. The engine in the 86 was still going strong when I retired it for parts and did not use any oil. It has been my experience that the only oils that will cause clutch slippage are oils that which say "energy conserving" or words to that effect.20/50 oils do not fall in that category. The Valvolene 20/50 has been good for me for 25 years and I still use it.

As Sylvester said early carbs mostly didn't carburate very well.Amals,Tillotsons,Linkerts, etc were all very primitive, simple and faulty. The bikes were prone to flooding, faulty ignition timing, weak spark at idle. They frequently wouldn't idle for very long, stumbled or quit during off idle acceleration. When they stopped they were hard or impossible to start.I learned to ride on these bikes and learned to blip the throttle at a stoplight so as not to be embarrassed with a balky engine. The bliping during downshifting was for synchronizing the trans gears.EArly trans didn't sync that well.We have come a long way in the last 50 years but sometimes old habits die hard and I am as guilty as anyone.Once upon a time there was good reason to work the throttle so much, then but not anymore.

Broke throttle cable
Pegasus1300 replied to Ndiaz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hi Nick I just posted you an answer over on VenturNet.Swifty gives a good writeup the only thing I would add is the advise to do the short return cable between the box and the cards at the same time. They fray very badly and then break somewhere between 40K and 65K.If yours hasn't yet and you have more miles then that I'd say you are on borrowed time.Good luck -
do a search here for the Darksiders. You should find all you need there.

Avon Junkie's First Impressions of Dunlop E3
Pegasus1300 replied to V7Goose's topic in Watering Hole
I just noticed your statement in the 1st post about the air lbs difference between the Avon and the Dunlop. The saying years ago was that Avons rode on air and everything else rode on the side walls.Avons have always needed a higher amount of air in my experience. I am interested to hear about the good experience you are all having with the E3. I am on Metz 880s now because I can put a white wall on the front. I would like to keep that up and put a white wall on the back as well but the only tire I can find in the RSTD sizes is the Dunlop 404.What is the opinion of the group on that tire? I have an 08 RSTD with 20,000 mi on it. -
I have an 08 just like yours with the Utopia on it.My wife does not mind it all and it does not seem to bother her or interfear with her comfort.
