I did a ride like that in 1973 from Provo UT to New Orleans, all snow from Provo to Dallas.I did it on an R75/5 with an Avon fairing. What a trip but once was enough.I admire anyone who can do that for fun.

Drive line problems
Pegasus1300 replied to Canadian Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I find it interesting that the howl did not appear until you changed tires and it goes away when you are verticle.Even tho your Brother has the same tires on his bike it is a different bike and Ventures are known to have tire howl. I have had 4 1st gens and 2 2nd gens and they all had a good deal of play in the driveline but only the 2nd gens howled. Some tires howled when fresh some as they wore but sooner or later they all howled on the 2nd gens. -
after 2 wrecks this year I think i need to see this video please put me on the list.

Actually you are both right.Lincoln did proclaim the last Thursday in Nov as a National Day of Thanksgiving to give thanks for the turning back of the Southern advance and the saving of the Union so yes it is appropriate to thank a past or present service person for their contribution. And yes we do remember the 1st Thanksgiving from back in the day when two very different cultures came together to give thanks to their respective Gods for His blessings and bounty. There have been verious days of thanksgiving proclaimed over the years but in Dec 26 1941 Pres Roosevelt proclaimed and congress fixed by law our current holiday. I just want to take this time to thank Black Owl for tracking us down in the hospital after our wreck and for all of your prayers and well wishes.Cynthia and I believe that they have made a difference in our lives Sorry for hi jacking your thread of giving thanx to our servicemen and women but I wanted you all to know how much we think of you.

Wow thats new information.I didn't know that any Yamahas were assembled in the US -
Well new to me anyway. I just bought a 1990 Goldwing Trike. I can't believe that after 25 years on Ventures I will be riding something else esp a Goldwing. All is not lost I do still have my 87 VR for 2 wheeling.I pick up the trike on Monday and will bring it down to Spring City and then try and learn how to ride it on the rural roads down here.I hope this old dog is up to learning a few new tricks.I'll post pictures when I get it home. The wing is nice,it is the SE model and has the reverse, and the deluxe sound system and cb radio. It is pearl white with polished aluminum wheels on the back and the PO just put a new timing belt and new rear tires on it.Of course it has cruise control and is already wired for heated clothing, tho the PO's jacket won't fit me.The trike kit is by TriKing out of Florida. They make a very nice kit that is longer then the standard kits and rides lower so the driveline has a level shot to the rear end and an automatic leveling system like many high end cars do.Because of the way it is set up the front end has 2.5 degrees more rake then normal so it steers easier or so the trike people say.Lots of new things to be finding out and a big learning curve both in riding skills and maintenence info.

Listen to the voices:backinmyday:.If I had I wouldn't be out a bike, recovering from a broken wrist,or watching my wife go thru agonizing Physical therapy. I am soooo glad you're not listening had such minor consequences for both of you.

One of the perks of being a member of the American Motorcyclist Association is that they have shippers who will give you a discount as a member and they advertize in the club magazine.I don't know but will bet that the Canadian equilvilant does the same.(Shameless plug) I have been a member for 13 years and found it very worthwhile and in my opinion if you ride you should suport your national organization that works to defend your right to ride.

wiring a trailer to bike
Pegasus1300 replied to rondeputy's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
When I wired the socket on my RSTD I wired it 5 wire style. One of my trailers is 5 wire and the other is 4 wire.I mounted the 4 to 5 adapter on the trailer tongue so the lead coming from the trailer is 5 wire. -

De-linking brakes idea for 83
Pegasus1300 replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ok my bad I didn't express my self well.I did know the thread was about delinking the brakes and I know what that means. I was under the impression that part of delinking the brakes was eliminating the proportioning valve to the rear caliper.I seem to remember a thread from years ago discussing this very subject and various ways to keep the rear brake from becoming too grabby, but I don't remember what those were. So I go back to my original question,if you mount the line to the front brake outlet of the master cylinder doesn't that bypass the proportioning valve/pressure limiter( I am not sure which it really is) to the rear brake thus giving full master cylinder pressure delivery to a single caliper from a master cylinder originally designed to feed 2 calipers and thus creating a grabby rear brake.I am not asking this question to discourage anyone from delinking their brakes or debunk the idea of doing that.I am actually considering doing that to my 87VR and I have the mechanical ability to do that I just have some unanswered questions about it.I feel that going is optional but stopping is manditory and if I can get better brakes an a 25 year old bike I am all for that. But until my research is done I will leave them alone as they work well when bled properly and with good pads. -
MKII Markland Hitch Install.
Pegasus1300 replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have done it both ways and there seemed to be no adverse effects to leaving the bolt out.I did finally find long enough bolts with full length threads at a specialty bolt house and you may have to do the same.It also is not that hard to cut new threads if you have the correct die. -
Yes you should change your fork oil. I don't remember the mileage but after 15 years you need to get it out of there. There are tech articles here that will tell you how to do that. You might also want to consider a set of Progressive fork springs. Also a set of Race Tech Cartridge emulators will help your front end alot. If you do not have an owners manual you can go online and find one. I always thought that you could air adj forks and shocks but I could be mis remembering. As for the rear end if your ride is that rough you may need a new rear shock.Check Progressive,White Brothers,or Works.Works makes a replacement shock for the RSV and the RSTD and mabe that will fit your bike. Others may chime in here and give you some more specific advice on 1st gen Royal Stars.I hope so.I have only owned an RSTD and an RSV-S

To try and answer Mike's question from awhile back. to the best of my knowledge California is the only state that allows lane splitting and then only under certain circumstances. It is my understanding that you can split lanes only in slow moving traffic can you split lanes an then if under a certain speed tho I don't remember what that speed is.I know I wouldn't want to do it very fast. I have had Squids pass me in my lane, always very fast and close. All I can say is future organ donors.

Wow thanx for asking that question.I have been here for years and did not know about either the flags or the earth features.I have always gone to the public profile to learn more about a member. My day is complete now I learned something new.

De-linking brakes idea for 83
Pegasus1300 replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not too change the subject too much but I have a question about removing the proportioning valve. If you do that wouldn't you end up with an overly sensitive rear brake:confused24:? I would think that you would need something to limit the force going to the rear brake as the weight will shift foreward during braking and unload the rear giving you less traction.Just wondering out loud. -
Rear tire change
Pegasus1300 replied to AD5ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
you have already have ordered the adapter so this doesn't really matter, but it is perfectly safe to use 4 2 x 4 blocks or 4 hocky pucks. Your jack should have rings on the front and back and you can run a strap from one over the top of the bike between the tank and the front of the seat. This will stablize the bike on the jack and you can go as high as you wish and do what ever work you need to do.I have done this for years until I got an adapter. Someone asked about an adapter for a 1st gen but as they have a centerstand neither an adapter or jack is needed.I have never used my jack on my 1st gen tho if I did I would use the above method. -
Great pictures of a great trip.Thanx for sharing
