I also like the Shell Rotella but I use the Dino oil. I can buy the 5 gallon jugs at WalMart for under 20 bucks. For myself I can't justify the cost of Syn oil when doing 3-4000 mile oil and filter changes so I find dino oil with a good zinc content. I have used these diesel truck/tractor oils for years and many thousands of miles with no engine failures.

Congrats Dave and Jan.And what a great ride. Hope you have another 33.

That is an aftermarket CB not the Yamaha unit. There was a good market for those back in the day as a CB was not standard until 87 or 88 and Yamaha was real proud of their unit. Not sure but I don't think there was any difference in the factory units from 83 to 93. I did put an 86 CB in my 83 and it worked ok.

Before removing your stand put a 2 x 4 underneath it and then let the air out of your tire. That should give you enough room to take the wheel out.

Market Rearch_What would you pay for a new redesigned Venture?

I like the current style and as such the Harley Ultra and the Victory Vision/XC are also on my list.In order for my wife to ride with me I need to convert to a trike.I have gone to a Goldwing Trike now but I hope to go back to a Royal Star trike soon.I have ridden the Yamaha V4 since 1986 and I loved my Royal Stars. Just real dissapointed in the way Yamaha has (not) developed the platform and done its marketing. -
carb problem
Pegasus1300 replied to pmelah's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Paul Go get another can of the Berryman's only this time a spray can. With the cover off the airbox so you can see the carb mouths. You will see some holes.Spray the B12 in all those holes and around the slides.Keep doing this until it clears up.Usually takes one or 2 cans and some in the tank but it will clear it out. Use some compressed air in those holes if you have it.I have used this several times. I got the idea from an article in the Bench Wrench section of the old Venture Roads the magazine of the VTS. -
as brake pad said they are available from JC Whitney. They have both sizes. They also used to be available from Drag Specialties maybe still are.If you just want to recolor them Eastwoods used to have a paint/dye to recolor old lenses.

I had a 130 on the front of my RSTD. I had heard that it made the steering much lighter on the RSV.It did make it easier to steer but I thought it made it too sensitive and I went back to the 150. If I hadn't wrecked my RSV so soon after I got it I would have put the 130 on the front of it.The extra weight of the fork mounted fairing does give it much heavier steering.

The last Battery I bought at WalMart had the hole for the sensor. I have also bought a battery from Batteries Plus that did not have a hole in it so I drilled one and that worked fine also. What can I say I didn't have a resistor and did have a drill.

Hannigan makes one for their trike kits.

that is just too much. I am very impressed.:lightbulb:Have you actually tried to use it and is it easier to use then a carbtune?

If you do use Blinker Fluid in your muffler bearings be sure to use the synthetic kind as it will hold up to the heat better. There seems to be a lot of hot air going over the muffler bearings these days.

What sad news.Prayers sent for the family -
Pretty bikes both of them and a good price too. I don't remember the 85s coming in blond tho.I thought that was only 83VR and 87 5th anniversary?

Definately flush, clean, and replace with new fluuid and be sure to leave pleanty of head space so the fluid can expand when hot.Otherwise you can lose clutch action.Very simple job and should be done on a regular basis with Yamaha VR's.

Hi Kenny. Glad to hear you are ok. I have friends in Amite who say they are wet but no loss of power or satilite,go figure. I have other friends in LaPlace who are under water.Hope you dry out soon.

biggest and coolest collection of old bikes and cars ever!

Brian thank you for posting that. What a great video. It would be a real treat to even find one of those machines but to have a warehouse full of that stuff is incredible Bill you have a fantastic memory of your granfather there.Thank you for shareing that picture. -
Not to be a wet blanket but From your discription of your hip problem it sounds like you are going to hurt no matter what you ride. You will sit on a trike, sidecar rig or stock the same way.The only difference will be in getting on and when stopped. Are you losing leg strength? What do the doctors tell you as a possible solution to you problem?Do they give you any hope for remediation?

The motors are hard to kill, they can go 200k no problem, even farther. They also respond well to hot rodding it just depends on how much cash you want to throw at it. V-max cams will let it rev a little higher and produce more horse power and move the torque curve up.The V-Boost will link 2 carbs to each cylinder under hard acceleration ( your will need a wrecked V Max to get all the hardware). V Max rear end will give you lower gears.Wisco pistons used to make a big bore kit for the V Max to take it to 1600cc.Yamaha designed it to go that far but never acted on it.Barons Customs used to make a supercharger kit for the Early Royal Star(same motor). It drove off the crank on the left side.Very cool but VERRRRY Pricey if you can find one.So as they say "Money is power how fast do you want to go?" Enjoy your project, should be a lot of fun. +1 on leave the tank where it is,but if you change it you can mount the fuel pump anywhere, even leave it where it is just run the plumbing to it.There have been a few who have gone to a traditional type tank but they still needed the fuel pump as these can suck a lot of gas under hard accel. The current Royal Stars have a tradition tank, same engine and they use a fuel pump. -
You will have about the same power drag going either way. If you dont put a rake kit on your pressure on the shoulders will be about the same.I ride with a fellow who has aaa White RSV/Hannigan trike and it is very sleek, gorgeous and elegant looking, much more so (INHO) then another friends White Wing/Trike.However when we go to do presentations to youth groups the kids flock around both the trikes and the sidecar outfits. Both are real crowd pleasers. You can probably take the sidecar off the bike when you sell, but you may not have the old parts to left to return the steering to stock. If you don't buy the same model bike you will be buying new mounts and new rake kit so there will be a considerable expense either way. Open sidecars are available from Champion,Ural,Jawa and some others I don't remember. With a sidecar you will have to remember that it is sticking out to the right. With a trike you have to remember that you are wider then you used to be on either side, but not as wide as a sidecar. I have to agree with the others who have said this,do the hip replacement now. Then decide what you need for a ride.On either of the 3 rides (stock, trike, sidecar) you still have to stradle it and some of your hip discomfort is coming from that. From experience you will heal so much faster at 50 then in 60's or 70's.Afetr our wreck in 2011 I couldn't believe how long the recovery was from a simple fracture.I was 65 at the time.I had cancer surgery 12 years ago and was up and around in days and recovered in weeks. The effects from the wreck lasted a year. If you need to talk to someone you can call me.PM for phone#.

Unfortunately you have to get the whole speedometer unit to replace the odometer. If no one offers on here try ebay. Or check to see if any motorcycle salvage yards near you have a 1st gen Venture. 86-93 guages are different from 83-85.
-
Yes this is a common problem on 1st gens. The gear that drives the odometer is metal but the driven odometer gear is plastic and wears out.The gearhead for the speedometer in seperate. Others may had sucess in repairing these but I have not been able to take one apart in such away that it can be put back together.my solution was to replace the whole guage. It can be removed from the cluster fairly easily. For those of you who haven't experienced this yet now would be a good tine to go in and grease those gears.I use LaBells 109 teflon grease for model locomotive gears which are usually plastic against metal.

Hi Craig I faced the same situation as you tho for different reasons. My hips and knees are ok so far.I totaled 2 Royal Stars in 2011 and don't really trust myself on 2 wheels any more.I am 66. I went to a trike in Oct of last year.I have learned to enjoy the trike and I am still riding.Whats more my wife will ride with me and she will not ride on 2 wheels anymore.I did not like my first rides on a trike including the one I bought.I rode a Spyder and found it very exciting but I felt it was under engined and very expensive for me. I would like to have ridden a side car rig,I have always been facinated by them.I now know 3 people who have Hannigan side cars(2) or Champion(1).They really enjoy them. After a summer on the trike(1990 GL 1500 with a TriKing comversion) I have learned that you need the raked tripple trees (at least 4.5 degrees and probably 6)I have ridden 2 trikes now with rakes and they are a dream to handle..After 40+ years on two wheels it has been hard to make the transfer to three.I miss my Blue 08 RSTD very much.I waited for that bike for 12 years.I miss the feeling of leaning into the curves, but let me say again I AM STILL RIDING.Its still the same wind in my face, the same open road, the same sense of being in the scenery not going thru it.the same freedom, openess, and advernture.I tried a convertible for awhile it wasn't the same for me( anyone want a really nice 94 Blue and White Mustang GT,84K miles?)Some in our group have gone that way but it wasn't for me.Some dealers will rent Spyders.A lady in our group who wanted to ride did that for a year but has now bought her own.You might try that for awhile.GWRRA puts on a trike class see if there is one near you.Visit www.triketalk.com and pose your questions there. Some of us on this site are also membrs there and will tell you there is a wealth of information there. Also some very nice and friendly people.I used to think 3 wheels was the end of the world, now I know it is the beginning of a new one.And i can still ride and be with my wife. Some of us will be able to ride forever on 2 wheels but some can't and 3 wheels is better then none.

what a great story and a great reminder that our little ones our so precious and don't always see things in the same way we do.
