  1. Naugahyde. Unless it is an aftermarket seat like the Corbin.
  2. As far as I know, there is no jack on the '87. Yamaha started putting the jacks in when they came out with the RSV in '99. I think you will have to use either the cassette adapter or a FM modulator.
  3. Don't know if I can help or not. Not very familiar with the Royal Star wiring. I called and got your voice mail though. I left my number so give me a call if you need to.
  4. I tried to get into a pair once....probably should have asked first...she got REALLY mad.
  5. Well I don't know what to say. I know that I would NOT have handled the situation well at all. In fact, I would likely have one completely ballistic. I hope they come up with a VERY good remedy to the problem.
  6. Yep...and they don't get an quieter. At least they pretty much stay the same. No packing to burn out so what you have is what you'll pretty much always have. I used to have Samsons with the turndowns but got tired of the noise after a while.

    new vmax

    Now THAT would be sweet.
  8. If you find an aftermarket basket that will fit, please let us all know. I've never heard of one. Yamaha has several different baskets that they have tried. What they call the "I" basket is the one that seems to have done the most to correct the problem. From what I have been told, it is ONLY available as a warranty replacement from Yamaha.
  9. I think it all comes down to what folks order. Tinted, non-tinted, height, etc. They have some in stock but some of the tinted shields are what are taking extra time to get.
  10. I've been reading all of this excellent information Kit and want to thank you for all the testing that you have done for all of us. When it is all said and done though, I going to borrow a line from Jamie of "Mythbusters" and say "I choose to deny your reality and substitute my own." Seriously, I agree with a whole lot of what you have posted but with one HUGE exception. Since these bikes came out in 1999 and I bought my first one in May of that year, I've seen and listened to literally hundreds of them. There are major differences in the levels and type of sounds. I think that pretty much everything you said is true of the loud and sometimes high pitched "whine" that many folks complain about. My '99 has a bit of that. I've always run Mobil 1 motorcycle specific in my '99 and do not find the while to be objectionable. BUT...the sound that I know to be caused by the clutch basket is entirely different and present at various speeds, rpms and even at idle. I know it when I hear it. I lived in Dallas, TX when Rick Butler bought his first 2nd gen. He came by one day to show it to me and as soon as he pulled into my relatively long driveway, I heard it. When he pulled under my breezeway I still heard it and the first thing Rick asked me was "do you hear that". YES...and it is NOT normal. Also, Rick is one of the most knowledgeable people that I know when it comes to the Venture. He has been riding them since '83 I think and knows them pretty much inside and out. He too knew that this was NOT a normal sound. He did get his pretty much remedied after I think TWO clutch basket swaps. The sound that is caused by a bad clutch basket is not so much of a whine as it is a high pitched chirping sound. The best way that I can describe it is a high pitched warbling sound, almost like a canary. This is the sound that I KNOW can be eliminated or drastically reduced with a clutch basket change. I've said it many times but I still think it is true. There are two different issues with these bikes that folks get intertwined that are totally non-related. High pitched warbling sound caused by the clutch basket and a whine caused by the straight cut gears. The whine from the straight cut gears can be reduced exactly as you have done. The high pitched warbling sound is absolutely not corrected by any brand, weight or type of oil. So there you are. That is my story after also looking at this issue for almost 10 years.

    Tank Bib

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think so. I think the RSTD has a slightly small tank.
  12. Well here is my story. I love the second gen. I like the cruiser styling. If I had to trade right now and there was no longer a 2nd gen, I would most likely go with an Ultra Classic. Now I've owned 3 first gens and they are just not ergonomically friendly for my build or something. But if I WERE riding a first gen and really liked it and found the time had come to replace it, the BMW K1200LT would be near the top of the list.
  13. Looks great in the pictures. I hope it is everything he dreamed it would be. Dan sure deserves it.
  14. I wish we had a step by step procedure for it but I think there have only been one or two people who have done it. Salty did it to his but later sold his RSV and never did a complete write-up as far as I know. Maybe somebody else here will jump in with some details.
  15. I've tried all different grades of gas and have SEAFOAMED the heck out of it.

    Sad News

Sasha, He lived in Hebron, IL so possibly not too far from you. I think that in SOME cases, the law in your native country may have it right. If it involves a drunk driver, drugs, etc. then there should be jail time in my opinion. In the case of a young person at a bad intersection though, I think some compassion is called for. It's a tough call sometimes. I would personally not wish to be a judge. This young lady is going to have to live with this for the rest of her life. My prayers go out to all involved.
  17. I agree. Folks don't get no better than Larry.
  18. Sorry Russell, I would have to see pictures and a notarized affidavit.
  19. I use ITunes and like it. I'm not sure that their format is compatible with all MP3 players though.
  20. I had the pleasure of doing it on the bike about 4 or 5 years ago. It was fantastic. Be sure and do the "Road to the sun" if you make it up there. Fantastic and beautiful place to ride. We crossed over into Canada and went to Banff (did I spell that right:confused24:). On the USA side, we stayed at a small motel right inside the park. Had a great time. Even went white water rafting while we were there. Here is a pic of Eileen and I at the top of the "Road to the Sun". Wouldn't hurt to wear a jacket.
  21. Yes, I did change to RSTD pipes but as far as I can tell, they are identical to the stock RSV pipes with the exception of the tips.
  22. Folks...most of you know that I am NOT one to scold folks but PLEASE remember, this is a PG rated site. If you want to talk about snow, please find a site that allows such vulgarity.
  23. Very nice bike. First thing I would have to do would be to find a drivers back rest...other than that...looks like it is ready to go.
  24. The plugs actually looked good. Gap was fine and color was good and also consistent between them all. I got around this morning to checking the LEDs on the Dyna 3000 and according to them, it is working fine. TPS LED lights up at 50% throttle position as it should. According the LEDs, it is operating properly. I'm pretty sure that the Dyna is NOT the problem but I may try the stock one anyway just to completely eliminate that possibility. So...coils are good, plugs are good, air filters are good, Dyna appears to be good. That leaves me with carb problem or mechanical resistance. I'll put it on the lift today but I'm sure that's not the problem. I've had it on the lift a number of times and always spin the wheels and etc. Sure looks like a carb problem and carbs, other than synchronizing, are NOT my specialty. I guess I'll pull them over the winter though and see if I can find anything.

Folks, I really want to add David to our memorial pages but I don't have a picture of him. If anybody has one, please let me know. Thanks
