  1. I agree...would be interesting to see how it really works. I'm not a big fan of automatic trannies for motorcycles, shifting is half the fun for me. I'm sure that in the manual mode, you are just shifting but no clutch. Might be kind of cool. Not sure I would ever want one though.
  2. He needs to join the forum and then submit an application to be a Venture owner. Only the upper elite of mankind are truly worthy of owning one of these fine machines.
  3. So was I. That's how I cruised around looking for se.....well...you know.
  4. Take a look at this link for a new automatic transmission Honda that was supposed to be on the market in October, don't know if it was released or not. Pretty cool idea as automatics go. It gives you too automatic modes and a 6 speed manual shift mode. http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle-news/2008-honda-motorcycles/ Also, scroll down that page and take a look at the awesome looking 6 cylinder sport bike...concept.
  5. Cloudy and rainy here. I HOPE to get mine cleaned up and go out for some pictures tomorrow. I don't want to be entered into the prize drawing but would like to enter some pics.
  6. That looks almost exactly like the one that I used to replace my cassette deck. Worked out pretty well. If you haven't seen it, there is an article in the tech library on doing that swap.
  7. WHAT????? 20 years ago, 30 years ago, 40 years ago...that's ALL I thought about. I STILL think about it from time to time.
  8. Verizon has their navigator available on many of the handsets but it's a monthly subscription I think. I've heard it is pretty good but have no use for it so have never tried it.
  9. OK....here is something else that we can debate. ) I received the following via private message. I told him to post it up but he preferred that I throw MYSELF in front of the bus. So...without further comment at this time, I will just throw it out for your consumption. Has anybody considered putting in some of the plane old light wgt " break in " no additives, no detergent, etc. that we all used to use back in the old days when we were told to " break in our new engines " by the manufactures. And run this oil for a few hundred miles. Maybe the parts that are causing the noise would " wear in " better and the noise would go away. ???? I think the stuff is still sold, mostly as SAE-30 straight wgt oil for lawn mower engines. Maybe 10 or 20 wgt. would work better. I am wondering if the new super lubricants that we are using now, are such good lubricants that these V-4's are simply not getting broke in correctly ??
  10. I would have been happy to ride it for you. Actually, if it's the chirping that we are talking about, I wouldn't even have to ride it. You can hear it with the bike at idle. I've had two '99 models and I've had no problem with either of them. I've never had a basket changed. Both had and have a bit of the whine but not a level that I consider unacceptable. I HAVE heard some that did though so know that they are not all the same.
  11. Well, based upon responses here, it appears that the stand alone MP3 players are not going away anytime soon. That is a good thing. As for me though, my next phone, probably the LG Venus when it comes out in a couple of weeks, will negate any future MP3 player purchases. My IPOD is about 4 years old. It's a 3G 16GB version. My son has a 60GB model. Though some have had problems with the hard drive Ipods on the bikes due to vibration, mine has done just fine. I think I have had to re-sync it one time in 4 years when the vibration on the bike apparently caused the hard drive to lose data but I didn't have to repair anything. It's done a good job. When riding the bike, I probably use the XM about 80% of the time. When I get into an area of the mountains or trees that are causing signal loss for the XM, I use the Ipod. WHEN I have it with me. I forget it sometimes. That is why the phone/mp3 solution sounds good to me. Flash memory storage and since I always have it with me, I will also have my mp3 with me. Now in my company car, I have my laptop mounted on a Ram mount. I have the GPS and everything I need in the laptop. I also have my Itune software on the laptop so I don't need the Ipod. If I want to listen to my music collection, I just open the Itunes software, unplug the cable from the XM radio and plug it into the headphone jack of my laptop and am good to go. It just feeds the music from the laptop right into cars audio system the same as the XM does.
  12. Also...this is NOT just related to those horns. Many, including me, have experienced that problem with stock and other horns also.
  13. I have an old Honda 200SX, '86 model, here that is pretty much a beater. It's seen a hard life but still runs great. I noticed it on the side of the road on one of my business trips and stopped and looked at it. The guy had bought it a year before and said it didn't run when he bought it and he had never messed with trying to get it running. I bought it for $250.00, took it home, had it running in about 10 minutes. It looks a bit rough but runs fine. I need to buy new sprockets and a chain for it. The front sprocket is worn so bad that the chain will skip on it if you get on it hard.
  14. I was glad to do it Charlie. Sorry it took me so long. They actually may have had them the first place I checked. When I finally found this one, it was not in the Motorcycle section where I expected, it was by the automobile frames.
  15. I'm sure many folks would agree with you. I guess that is why both are still on the market.
  16. Yea, but many of these new phones allow you to do just that. Some call it an "airplane" mode where the phone is off but the MP3 player still works. So why carry both?
  17. Please see my previous post. Same amount of air, less volatile fuel with the ethanol mix. Could that not cause a lean condition? I'm not saying that it does, I'm asking sincerely.
  18. I suspect that with all the new high capacity cell phones that there will soon be no reason for stand alone MP3 players. I just became eligible to upgrade to a new cell phone under my current plan. I started looking and actually got one and then took it back because it didn't support the memory that they said it did. I had 4 Verizon store associates and two a the technical support number tell many different things but NONE of them knew the products that they are selling. So, as usual I found it best to do my own research. I'm glad that I did because there are some great new phones hitting the stores next month and I'll wait for one of them. So, what I am talking about is that several new phones coming out will support 8GB of storage via the micro sdhc chip. That is the same as an IPOD Nano. I like the idea of not having to take my cell phone AND my MP3 player on the bike or anywhere else for that matter. Not only is the 8GB chip now available, but they soon you will be able to get them with up to 32GB. That's a LOT of songs folks. I have over 100 complete CDS on my IPOD and am only using about 8GB of space. Many of those I never listen to or really even like, just loaded up everything I had at the time. So, what do you think? Are stand alone MP3 players going to become a thing of the past? Why would anybody want to carry around two different devices when one will do? I am really looking forward to my new phone/MP3 player next month. Here's a link to the particular one that I am looking at but others are coming to. http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/8404.html
  19. Naw...I don't think so. Popeye has an '86, it's the second gen manual that has the carb sync all wrong.
  20. I really don't understand how they can be so sure that it's not electrical. I'll be interested in knowing what they find. Sure sounds electrical to me. Unless they have already run tests to prove otherwise.
  21. Well I'm just sort of thinking out loud here. Maybe the ethanol has nothing to do with it at all but I'm still not convinced. Most test show that the gas with ethanol produces poor fuel economy, that's just ONE of the reasons that ethanol is NOT a good solution to any oil shortages. It is not as volatile or something. So if you are really not getting enough actual energy producing fuel, but are still getting as much air as before, it just seems to me that it could indeed cause a lean condition and that maybe drilling the pilot jets out did indeed help with the problem. I will be the first to admit though that carbs are not my specialty. In fact, come to think of it, I HAVE no specialty.
  22. I spent some time on that number about 3 or 4 years ago. Didn't find it to be especially satisfying. The DO have email addresses, they just don't want anybody to know them. I actually got hold of one back then and email the head of Yamaha customer service in the USA. I emailed him a couple of times and got no response. I then emailed him again and said "look, I KNOW this is the correct email address for you and if I don't get a response within the next few minutes, I'm going to publicize it." hmmm.....he replied about 10 minutes later.
  23. Here is an older thread where we discussed this also. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5886&highlight=Sony Here is what I said at the time. Now almost a year later, I'm still very happy with my choice. Well...I looked at a LOT of different ones before finally pulling the trigger just before Christmas. I was pretty sure that I would go with plasma but after looking at a lot of different pictures and reading a lot of different reviews...I finally ended up going with projection. I bought a Sony 60" with their SXRD technology. A bit different than DLP. I am extremely happy with it and it is a GREAT value when compared to plasma. The one I bought generally sells for around $2700.00 in most of the chain stores but I got mine for $2300.00 when it was on sale. Couldn't be happier. The ONLY disadvantages that to the projection units are: 1. They are not as thin. I wasn't mounting it on the wall so didn't care. Mine is about 18" deep. 2. The projection lamps will burn out. I figure mine will last between 5 and 8 years and then it will cost me about $200.00 to replace it. But....it is a 60" 1080P model and to buy that same size in 1080P Plasma is a LOT more money.
  24. I recently heard from one of our California members that he had been having some performance problems with his first gen Venture. He said that he finally got it resolved by a very good mechanic and some carb work. Turns out that it was caused by the gas that was being sold in his part of the country and I think that it is a very valid point. I asked him to let me know what was done and here is the answer to my question. I find it very interesting and it makes a lot of sense to me. I think it could also apply to the second gen Venture. Here is the response: Hi Don, good evening. I'll be as brief as I can, although Mary tells me it just isn't in my genetic make-up! My bike had just had a total engine rebuild, so should have run well, but not so. I kept fiddling with it, and it sort of ran okay, and was a rocket on the freeway. I went to this engine guy, Larry Holt, who has done two V-8's for me...I know how, but I'm 62 now, and someone else can do it for me. I told him I thought I had ignition trouble, and he said no way, not if I can do 80 on the hiway. And if Mary and I wanted to just putt around looking at the sights, the bike would run on it's own at 3000 rpm. I couldn't shut it off with the throttle return twist. Larry's solution was that there was a lean running fault because of the rotten gas we get here, and I'd messed up the carb sync trying to get it to idle as well as it did. We reamed the pilot (idle) jets in all four carbs from 16 thou to 18 thou, and reset the sync. An absolute miracle. Runs like a dream, with a ton of throttle response. The bottom line seems to be: the carbs were designed and built before the garbage gas here in California, and with all the added alcohol, they now run lean. Just for laughs, I put in some 110 octane aviation gas, and oh my! What a ride! Hope this helps someone, somewhere.....Best regards, Mike
  25. This issue will likely be dependent upon the dealer. Maybe if they want to make it an issue, they can. From what I understand about the law though, they would NOT be able to deny any warranty work unless they can positively prove that the problem was caused by pulling the trailer. I can tell you that a few years ago I had a problem with my RSV. It was one of those things that should have been taken care of with no problem but due to my very bad local Yamaha dealer, I ended up contacting Yamaha and eventually even had a lemon law attorney involved. It drug out for almost 14 months before finally getting resolved but at no time during the entire ordeal was the fact that my motorcycle had a trailer hitch on it ever mentioned by anybody.
