  4. Ditto on Neil's suggestion. I disconnected my YICS years ago and eliminated various problems. You don't need it and take it all off. I did a post on how to plug the ports that is real cheap and works great and it is perminant and you do not have to worry about any rubber plugs deteriating over time.   6. I am probably not the best one to tell about solid motor mounts, as the set I have are in the motor I am planning to put in my bike whenever I get motivated enough. Those that have put in solid motor mounts say that it does help the handling of the bike as it makes the engine part of the rigidity of the frame. Some say that it may increase vibration, but I have not heard anyone say that they regret putting them in. I also suspect that carb sync may become a little more critical, but maybe that is a good thing. If you are interested, you can contact SGN, as he had some made up for us and I don't know if he has any left, or I can talk to him as he lives local to me. RandyA
  7. Another suggestion with the engine out would be to put in solid motor mounts. It will help the handling of your bike and I know someone that can probably help you out with some if you are interested. RandyA

  9. I normally always run 87 octane, even when with pulling my 450 pound camper through the mountains. I have never had a problem with pinging that has been noticeable unless I absolutely lug the bike until it is bucking. I know that the V-Max rear will make a little difference, but on flat ground, I can take my bike down to about 15mph in 5th gear and slowly accelerate back out of it smoothly. I don't make a point of running non ethanol gas, but if it is convenient I will. I usually run what they sell at Walmart, which is Murphy around here. RandyA
  10. That seems like a lot more off than I have heard on a 2nd gen. As far as using the radar timer, you really have to make sure you are the only traffic on the road to get an accurate reading. A truck or SUV a ways behind you can get a reading because he is giving a stronger bounce back of the signal than you are on your bike, or at least that is the way it is on my 1st gen. Search speedohealer or something like that and you can see what it says. Not sure about the odometer, but you could probably get a good comparison with mile markers, especially the ones that have the tenth mile signs between the mile markers. RandyA

  12. Years ago, my son Brian had a Yamaha FZ1 that he changed the exhaust on and had it re-jetted, using a dyno. I think it pulled a little over 130hp at the rear tire and this is a fairly light bike. He was working out of town and I rode the bike several times and yes, I dealt with that "OK, which country road can I go down that I can crank it on for a few seconds?". And, it only took a few seconds to get scary fast. It was definitely not the bike that you could take a leisurely ride through the country and enjoy it, as is my Venture. RandyA
  13. At the time I did the shim thing, I went to Lowes and got some small washers that fit over the needle and tried different thicknesses until I got what I wanted. My first try caused a noticeable hesitation and after another try or two, I worked it out. I did not change any other jets. This particular run that got 50mpg was during the Asheville Rally a couple years ago. I filled the bike up and rode the Blue Ridge Parkway going across the highest part of the Parkway to Cherokee, NC. I made a point of running easy on the throttle and downshifted any time I felt like I was lugging the bike, going back to the theory of if you leave the throttle the same and downshift and the bike speeds up I wasn't running the most efficient. To maintain the same speed in a lower gear, I had to reduce throttle a little. It is a long pull to the top of the mountain, but it is also a long way down the other side. On the run back to Asheville, I went through Maggie Valley back to Asheville. I then stopped at the same gas station and refilled the bike. I don't always check the mileage, but several times lately I have gotten in the high 40's and that is with the V-Max rear. RandyA

  15. I would not use WD40 as a lubricant, especially for something like a speedometer cable. WD40 will actually wash any lubricant, such as grease or oil off the cable. Use a light grease or heavy oil. You may also need to put some grease around the bearing in the bottom of the speedometer where the cable goes into from the outside. The bearing can be greased from the inside by taking the speedometer out, or make or buy a fitting that will screw on the speedometer where the cable housing goes and you can grease it with a grease gun.   16. I suspect that there really is a relationship between the pin and the locating tab on the diaphragms. I wonder if anyone has ever looked at this with an unmolested set of carbs and diaphragms. My suspicion is the pin would be on the bottom of the assembly to cause a slight lift on the end of the pin, maybe to center it a little and maybe reduce wear on the pin and jet. I have a set of carbs that appear to have the original diaphragms and if I can remember, I will check this out. I did the shim thing on my carbs several years ago and played around with different thicknesses and worked through some hesitation and responsiveness until I got what I wanted. I used to be happy if I ever saw 40mpg and now I am wondering what is wrong. With being very careful with not lugging the bike, I have seen as good as 50mpg and this is without losing any power. This is also with not having the strong fuel smell with the bike idling in the garage for a few minutes. RandyA
  17. Steve, I agree with you completely. If the driver of the truck had pulled out one second earlier, he very likely would have been killed with having a motorcycle and rider inside the cab with him. If he had pulled out one second later, the motorcycle most likely would have missed him and there is no telling who or what he may have hit down the road. This is my hometown and my parents lived one block away on the other one way street that matches this one for many years. It is a two lane, one way, with parking on both sides of the street and very limited visibility unless you pull out into the lane to see if anything is coming and even that is limited with a slight rise in the road. In this case, the driver of the truck did absolutely nothing wrong and is a very lucky man, and I am sure he is struggling with this catastrophe in his life. RandyA

  22. Someone has to step forward to do the right thing. Thank you for your post, as many have no clue as to what it takes to keep the tyrants of the world from taking over. Many young people today never consider service to their country as part of their life. And, not only that, they have no appreciation for those that do step forward. They simply do not understand that those that did step forward has afforded them the right to chose to serve or not. RandyA

  24. Yep, I did that to a guy on a Big Dog type Harley. He was sitting beside me at a light rapping the throttle and when the light changed, he nailed it as we were going up a long on ramp onto the interstate. His bike was screaming and I drove right by him. We had to slow as there was a car in front that was merging onto the highway. As soon as it was clear that there was not any traffic coming, I swung over in the left lane with him right behind me and again, pulled away from him. I shut it down and he went screaming by me and he wouldn't even look over at me when I waved at him. RandyA
