  1. My 83, my rider an 85 VR that needs to be put back together A 96 Goldwing that needs a starter gear fixed An 86 VR that belongs to my son and my grandson just took his 83 VR home two days ago. Randy
  2. Hope we got some strong legs, not many level places in Asheville. Would be fun, but where is the latrine? RandyA
  3. One thing that I forgot to tell you on the V-Max final drive swap is when I got mine from one of our members, he also included a new dust shield that was still in the plastic wrapper. This is the dust shield that attaches to the wheel. I am not sure if this shield is what originally came from the V-Max or what, but it worked. Maybe another member can chime in and give us an update. I used to have the wrapper that had the Yamaha part number on it, but I have no idea where it may be now. Randy
  4. Brenner, just want to say that I enjoyed our conversation also and I particularly enjoyed your enthuasuism. I think you will do fine on this project and want you to know that you can call anytime. BTW, which final drive did you get? Randy
  5. I have had a Corbin seat for a long time on my bike and before I had it recovered, I scooped it out to make it more comfortable and to lower it. I have tried several things, like the gel seat and what I have found is the most comfortable for Linda and me is the cheap chair seat cushions that I can get from Walmart. They are light, breath good and don't jack me up. They can be flipped over to keep the top of the cushion and the seat cool when parked in the sun and if parked in the rain, I can either take them with us of store them in the trunk. Another thing is they come in many colors and are cheap and if I loose one, I can get another one at Walmart. Randy
  6. Wow, as you know, as bad as it was, it could have been worse and glad it wasn't. As I have gotten older and have ridden many miles, I am becoming more and more aware of how quickly things can go bad. Whether it is a second of loss of focus, something I missed in the road, or someone else's or even my own stupidity, I know it can change my life real quick. Being able to enjoy the ride is the balance between being very aware and being paranoid to the point of loosing the enjoyment. As has already been said, we are glad it was not worse and you and your wife are here to share this with us. RandyA
  7. You can either compress the big spring and pull the thrust washers out and see what they look like, and if they are the normal MKI washers, they will most likely have a groove worn in them or you could pick up an MKII trans or even a 2nd gen RSV trans. If you pull the thrust washers out and they are not worn, I suspect strongly the trans has been updated with harder thrust washers, or an MKII trans has already been installed. RandyA
  8. Remember, it is always darkest before the dawn. Brad, there is no doubt that you and Lonna are such a great example in what it takes to make this a wonderful place. From the very first time I met you, I have always been impressed with you and feel very lucky to call you a friend. Randy
  9. Not for the bike, for my laptop. I am trying to change my browser from Internet Explorer to Chrome and I go thru the steps to load it and it says it is loaded, but it does not appear to be there. It does not show up in my programs section either. I tried to download Foxfire, but it made all kinds of changes to my computer, so I uninstalled it. What am I doing wrong? RandyA
  10. I used a Harbor Freight coupon out of Rider magazine and I believe I got mine for about $60 plus tax. It has worked real well and I have used it for many things. It works real good for putting a transmission in a car or putting the engine in my 83 Venture. It also works good on lifting the front of the riding mower or ATV. My only concern on mine is it is difficult to lower it slowly. RandyA
  11. The only thing I have been concerned with on the middle gear/out drive gear is to make sure I have adaquate mesh by using the shims. The first time I put an MKII trans in my 83, I used that outdrive gear and it was slightly noisy and it also had a seal leak. I put the 83 outdrive gear back in it and it was quieter and no leak. I personally would not worry about the outdrive gear that was matched with the 2nd gen gearset. With the slight difference in machining from one engine case to another, the shims that should come with the new one may be better or worse. My cell is 423-726-0431 if you want to call me. RandyA
  12. To my knowledge, none of the 83's had the bleed point at the top of the loop near the tripple tree. I think it may have been an MKII thing. I have found that on my 83, to bleed the brakes to the front that I need to move a lot of brake fluid, fast. I have just opened the bleeder valve and use my finger as a check valve while someone else pumps the rear brake. If you do not bleed fast, the bubble will stay in the loop at the top. I had the local bike shop order some speed bleeders, but I have not picked up any yet. RandyA
  13. OK, I just set Chrome as my browser. I will see if that helps my problem. I had to reload it. Thanks, RandyA
  14. No Don, on here is fine. It is other places I have the problem. I actually have Chrome loaded, I just have not to set it up as the browser. I guess I should try that and see what happens. RandyA
  15. Another thing, I have always used Internet Explorer as my browser. Now, sometimes when I pull some things up, it tells me that my browser does not support it. I am also having a problem with it stopping and a box coming up saying "Internet Explorer not responding" Any suggestions? RandyA
  16. In my opinion, I do not think you would be happy with putting a 2nd gen trans in a 1200 motor without also using a V-max final drive. I say this because the 2nd gen gear ratio spacing is wider apart and 5th gear would be very tall. It would kill the torque of this motor. If you look at Dingy's post, you can see the differences in gearing. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/general-tech-talk/56189-gear-reduction-explanation.html?highlight=gear+ratios When comparing the ratios, remember that the higher the number, the lower the gearing. Like I have stated, to compare a stock 1st gen with a 2nd gen trans with a V-Max final drive, 1st gear is about 10% lower, 2nd is 5% lower, 3rd & 4th are the same and 5th is about 5% higher. Another comparison would be a stock 1st gen in 5th gear and then with the 2nd gen trans, 4th would be about the same. But, with the big step to 5th gear, it would be just about unusable. As said, you can call me as my number is my profile. RandyA
  17. You keep this up and you are gonna learn something. RandyA
  18. The address I have used for Google maps, which was setup to my hometown, has changed. Before, it came up with Johnson City in the middle and I could slide the portion on the leftside of the page out of the way. Now it comes up with a box with a lot of symbols and scrolling down will get me a map of middle Tennessee, but I can not do anything with it. Has anybody else's Google map changed? I have tried downloading several Google Map addresses and it still does the same. RandyA
  19. Thanks for the update, we always like to learn something, even when someone is a bad example. RandyA
  20. I talked to Pinwall today about a V-Max final drive they had listed that had an obvious problem and I asked if they had any 2nd gen transmissions available and she said not at this time. This is where I got my two from. The trick with Pinwall is in the way they package, you will get everything you will need. RandyA
  21. Well, I'm working toward the MKII upgrade on the front of my 83. I received the MKII rotors this week and tonight I won a set of MKII forks off ebay and it also has a very thick brace. My next thing is the R1 calipers. I have several bookmarked and am going for the gold ones. One set also has the master cylinder and reservior, but I don't know if I can get that to work and I'm sure the hoses will not be long enough. I plan on going thru the forks and replace the bushings and seals. I am also going the replace the bearings in the tripple tree. Since I put solid motor mounts in, I removed the braces that go beside the engine and it feels pretty good, but Im hoping the MKII upgrade will make it feel even better. RandyA
  22. If it were me, and I did do this, I would pick up a complete 2nd gen Venture trans along with a V-Max final drive. You can usually get the trans and final drive for less than $200. I think I have about $160 in mine. The change from original is about 10% lower in 1st, 5% lower in 2nd, 3rd and 4th the same and 5th about 5% higher. I love the lower 1st gear, especially for pulling a trailer and the higher 5th keeps me from feeling I need to upshift one more time while running 65 or more on the interstate. If you have any questions, give me a call. RandyA
  23. Must have been too embarrassing to share. RandyA
  24. Yep, I currently have the hydraulic controlled by the brake fluid pressure and I assume they work. I was just wondering if by blocking them off, was there was any noticable difference and even with Progressive springs, would I have some bottoming out. I know if I go to the electric ones, that by unplugging them, the spool will be open, but I don't how much difference that makes or if I block them, what difference does that make. I was just hopeing that someone that had blocked off their antidives could chime in. RandyA
