  1. If you will look at the end of the shaft, you will see a small mark. This mark should end up aligned with the slot in the shifter, or at least on the stock shifter. RandyA
  2. As I noted, I did plug mine off and the bike runs fine. If you are going to plug your's off, make sure you use pretty good caps. If not, the caps will come apart. RandyA
  3. I suspect it is the driveshaft and collar on the diffrential. It may not have ever been greased. RandyA
  4. Even though I don't think your bike has the YICS system, on older 1st gens you need to check the condition of these hoses. I was chasing a carb problem and it ended up being the hose connection near the right rear carb. I pulled them all off and plugged them and the bike runs much better. As far as the decelleration poping, that is usually an exhaust leak that is pulling in oxygen and firing. RandyA
  5. Gary, I can not imagine having to go through what you are dealing with. But, sometimes you just do what you gotta do. Even though I never met you and Leslie, it is very obvious from comments here that you had a blessed marriage. I know it will always be a struggle, but you have a lot of folks on here that are standing all around you. Thanks for posting and giving us your thoughts. RandyA
  6. As far as the engines go, I don't think there are any differences between the 1200 and 1300. There are some differences with the carbs, but they are close on and 84 and up. The 83 carbs are a little bit different. RandyA
  7. Welcome to the forum Shaggy Dog. But one thing to keep in mind, this bunch on here will laugh at you every chance they get, so get used to it. And it helps if you get to laugh at them also. In other words, we have a lot of fun on here. Do not hesitate to ask anything you can think of about these old Ventures, even the 1st gens, which go from 83 to 93. You will be amazed at the tremendous amount of knowledge there is on this site, and how eager people are to help you. Again, welcome aboard and jump right in. RandyA
  8. Does the bike still pull ok and go thru the gears? RandyA
  9. Speaking of, what are your plans on the bike in Knoxville? RandyA
  10. I put Jardines on my 83 about ten years ago and they still look good and sound good. I believe mine are a bit louder than they were new, but they still sound good. I think mine sound a little like a small block Chevy with the old turbo or glasspack type mufflers when I crank it on. RandyA
  11. I just read on the news about Max Baer Jr's 30 year old girlfriend committing suicide due to relationship problems. That's Jethro Bodine from the Beverly Hillbillies. The story stated that Jethro is now 70 years old. RandyA
  12. George, this is one of those parts that pop up on ebay and may go for $30 or close to $100 or more. I have seen nice ones go cheap and rough ones go for a lot more than I thought they would. I got one from a motorcycle salvage yard for about $20 because a couple of the connections were bent some, but I was able to round them back out. I still have my old one, but I had to have the left front connection replaced where it broke off. RandyA
  13. Is it me or has this been a slow year for noted winter projects discussions on the forum? Since I ended up doing my winter project last summer of replacing my transmission gearset, other than a planned cleaning and checking the bike out for some loose bolts, I don't seem to have much planned. I may try to get motivated and get my solid motor mounts made and get them replaced. RandyA
  14. As much as I love an above average temperature day in the winter time, it seems it brings out the bad in motorcycling. We had a death from a single vehicle motorcycle crash where the 21 year old lost it due to too much speed. I could not tell exactly what kind of bike it was from the picture in the paper, but it looked like a sport bike with either most of the plastic torn off or a naked type bike. The guy had just recently gotten back from Afghanistan with the 82nd airborne. RandyA
  15. I think there is too much of a problem with "electile disfunction" any way. RandyA
  16. I pulled it up on the local schedule this weekend to go see it and the reviews posted were not very good. Stated it was contrite and a few other bad things. I have not heard much about it after it came out either. RandyA
  17. I have put 89,000 miles on my 83 with Dunlap Elites, Metzler 880's and now Avon Venoms. The Venoms are by far the best for being quiet, good wear and handling up to about 75mph. From 80 up on my bike they are the worst handling tire I have had. Once at 100 mph I got into a rear end wobble that almost got out of control and when I posted this concern, it seems I was not the only one that had encountered it. I reduced the rear tire pressure down to the low 40's and it did help, but I am still not comfortable at running 80 on the interstate. RandyA
  18. That was fun and they did a great job matching up the music to the movement. In my four years in the USAF, I never saw that. RandyA
  19. Yeah, I wondered about that also. It does not look like he had it in his hand when he walked around the rear of his car and he appeared to reach in his car for it. RandyA
  20. I seldom go on You Tube, but a friend flagged this to me. It is an intersection car/cycle crash where the car obviously ran a red light. This is not for the faint at heart as the biker took a bad hit. But, on a lighter note, there are many more short videos attached near that are down right funny and it is amazing how stupid some people are. 21. If you do not have one of the "torque" type screw drivers with a hole in the center for the pin in the center of the screw, they are getting easy to find or you can break the pin off, or you can take the screw out with a small pair of Vise Grips. In fact, if your screws have never been taken out, you may need the vise grips on several of the screws any way. I replaced my screws with Allen head screws. I can even take my diaphragms out without even taking the side covers off. RandyA
  22. Hey carl, how are you doing 2nd gear? New gear replacment, gearset replacement or rework existing gears? I just replaced my gearset this past summer from an 86. RandyA
  23. Please give her a big hug for us, just be real gentle about it!!! RandyA
  24. My first thought with you having that much difference with exhaust temps is you need to do a good carb sync. It sounds like the bike is running mostly off the rear carbs at low speeds. I have had good luck using Liquid Tape to patch the diaphragms and have found that the key factors is to have the parts real clean and make sure the Liquid Tape is very cured before you reassemble them. I use brake cleaner and then alcohol to clean and after I put the Liquid Tape on, I like to leave the diaphragms in the sun for several hours. I have tried Yamabond and found that it made stiff places in the diaphragms RandyA
  25. Just another reason so many of still favor 1st gens. RandyA
