  1. My first suspicion is you have a stuck float. Try hitting the carb bowl with a small hammer. RandyA
  2. If you looked, it does have a 1300 cover on the side of the engine rather than the YICS cover. Maybe it is a 1300 that someone has replaced the engine with due to a 2nd gear problem. But for this, the bike would most likely have 113,000 miles on it. Then again, maybe someone did not know how to fix the speedometer squeal and replaced it. It does look clean. I am just glad it is WAY too far from Tennessee. RandyA
  3. Or, it could be his superior electrical engineering prowess. RandyA
  4. First of all, I am very interested in how this turns out. If everything fits, this may be a great set up for the 1st gens. Low 1st and 2nd gear and wider spread gears up thru 5th and still not as high as the 2nd gens due to the lower V-max rear gear. When you get everything apart, how about doing a teeth count comparison on each respective gear. Also, what are you going to do with the gears off the old shafts? This would be a good fix for one of these 2nd gear fixers. Given the leak problem I encountered, I would replace the clutch rod seal and I would replace the seal where the shifter goes into the engine. Also take a good look at the seal where the drive shaft comes out. These are the basic seals that sometimes start to leak and are cheap and easy to replace with the engine out. RandyA
  5. Welcome to our site Do, we are glad you are here. Jump in anytime you have anything to ask, or add or anything. We always love to see MORE 1st gen guys come aboard. As you probably know, ebay is usually the place to go, but sometimes you luck out on here and members can help you out. RandyA
  6. Nope you can't disable on your 87 because there is not one there! RandyA
  7. Lew, I think of it as a "late" 1st gen. Our's are the real 1st gens. RandyA
  8. Hey Wayne, Laura and I like to camp at Bradley campground on the Gatlinburg side of Cherokee. It is good to get the bike in and out of and has nice clean hot showers if you are tent camping. The prices per night are a lot less than the KOA campgrounds. You can also catch it to be able to camp within a few feet of the river and they will take reservations. I don't have their number handy, but you can do a search. RandyA
  9. They pop up on ebay routinely. RandyA
  10. PS---Randy, you got that extra gear out yet?!?!?!? I still haven't found the 1/8" radius gauge, and I'm thinkin about using my drill press and adjustable angle drill press vice to try this. WIll duplicate angle almost exactly. Whadya think? Internal parts comin this weekend, gettin itchy to start puttin her back together. DOn't know if I wanna take the time to cut the gears, maybe try to make you feel bad and just swap me out!!!! I will see what I can do about tearing it down tomorrow. I have been putting off tearing it apart to see how it looks after 60,000 miles anyway. RandyA RandyA
  11. "curves to brag about" by Double D. I was not sure what was going to come up when I opened it, but I could not resist looking. RandyA
  12. By the way, I see there is a 1st Gen for sale at a good price, you really did look at home on mine when you sat on it..........:stirthepot: Hey Lew, you trying to get ANOTHER 1st gen for him? We got him on one already. RandyA
  13. In todays paper there is a story about one of our local small towns installing picture radar out on the highway. It was also noted that warning tickets would be issued for the first month. Well, this local kid on a Honda decides to make a run at it and see what happens. He ends up getting clocked at 101 mph above the 55 mph speed limit. The only problem was he did not notice the Police Officer sitting there clocking on hand held radar both coming and going. The paper showed one of those pictures with the horizontal lines on the wall behind him and he don't look none too happy. At least the cop did not give chase, he just went by his house Sunday with a warrant for his arrest. Seems like the kid had a bit of a reputation on his Honda. RandyA
  14. I plugged mine and it runs a lot better than it did. Just get some heavy duty plugs. RandyA
  15. First of all, if it is original, it will fold down. Have you tried to loosen the nut and see what it will do? RandyA
  16. Qz, if your driveshaft is worn out from not being greased routinely, then the rear differential coupling is going to be bad also. It would probably be cheaper to buy a good used rear differential than try to get a coupling and get it set up correctly. Driveshafts go for many different prices, according to what the current need is. If you can not find one, I may have a good coupling on a spare differential that I have. RandyA
  17. I am not sure which day I am going to retire on as I do not know which day I am going to die on, as that will probably be the same day. RandyA
  18. My wife and camped in our twenties, then it turned into motels. Later on when grandkids came along, she got into the camping bug again. I went along, but hated laying on the ground, even on an air mattress. Several years ago we were out on a ride thru the country and ran across a small camper that a guy had pulled behind his early Goldwing. I turned around and got to talking to him and ended up buying it for about $125. I was not sure what condition it was in as I did not even open it up. When I got it home, I opened it up and other than needing some canvas work, it was is good condition. We have been using it for a couple of years now and it tows good behind my 83 and it is very comfortable to sleep in with a full size air mattress. We had been using an air mattress with the built in 120 volt pump and still has a place for a battery powered external pump, but we just bought a new mattress with a built in battery pump. We are lucky here in east Tennessee to have access to so many great camping places. Many of the private camp grounds have nice showers and are only about $15 to $20 per night. I am now looking forward to going camping this summer and in the past I used to dread it, but did it for the wife and grand kids. RandyA
  19. Actually I took the seat off because it was so tall. I think it is a Road Sofa, but I am not sure. I stuck my old seat on it to ride it while I had it and tweaked on it. I could barely touch the ground with that seat on it. RandyA
  20. It sounds like you are on top of it. One other concern in that area is sometimes oil will migrate through the stator wires and the wire grommet. It works good sometimes to coat the wires on the inside with Seals All, which is oil resistant. As far as your stator wire connections, cut the plug out and do a good solder job on the wires. RandyA
  21. I tell ya, he's seeeeen the light!!! Brad, I am very glad that we could help you and Lonna out. With a little TLC, I feel that is going to be a good bike for you folks. I also want to again say that Laura and I enjoyed our lunch with you and Lonna and your dad. Good luck buddy, and it is nice to have you back to the light side! RandyA
  22. I agree completely, well said Neil. I had all kinds of problems and it ended up being the YICS hose that goes to the right rear carb. I ended up taking them all off and plugging them. Bike runs a lot better. RandyA
  23. Well, another thought is, if we are running out of oil, let's use up their oil first. RandyA
