Laura and I took about a 130 mile ride down thru the country. It was about 70 degrees and absolutely beautiful. Many trees are budding out and there was so much color and the air was absolutely clear. It was like a moving postcard. The is the first ride in a while that was any miles at all and the bike ran great. We must have passed well over 200 bikes. we saw several groups that had at least 35 to 40 bikes. Even most of the Harley guys waved. RandyA

Need some help on Squidley's 1st gen.
Venturous Randy replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
Thanks for letting me know that you have the side panels. I would have thought that I would have noticed they were gone when we met up, but is was cold and we were more focused on getting unloaded and reloaded. Anyway, I feel better and did have a beautiful 150 mile ride on an early spring day with trees and things budding out everywhere and rolling green fields. RandyA -
Ok 2nd gen guys, get ready, something fell off a 1st gen. Well, it appears that when I towed Brad's bike to meet him, I may have lost both side panels. They were very snug when snapped in place, but due to having the seat off and the top tab not being held in place by the seat, they must have blown off, because when he got home, they were gone. It also appears that the way he put his straps on that it would have held the side panels in place if they were on when he strapped it down. I have offered him a spare set I have that are painted purple, but I would like to see if we can find some black ones first. So, let us go on a treasure hunt and see if we can find some black ones for him. Thanks, RandyA

Well, I just went out in the garage and looked real good for the side panels I knew I put on your bike and I could not find them. I am sure when I left here that everything except the seat was installed and given the way you put the straps on it is apparent the side panels must not have been on it when I delivered it to you. So, they must be somewhere in Kentucky. The only thing I can figure, given how tight they snapped in place, is without the seat being in place to catch the top tab on the side panels, they must have blown off. Now, given this, we can go on a group treasure hunt to see if we can find you a set of black ones like came on the bike or I will send you my spare set that are painted purple that you can repaint. Or another option on paint is to paint the rest of your bike to match the purple side panels(it would look good). I will probably never use them as I like the bikini set I have on now. Either way, we will get you some side panels. I guess I learned something here about towing with the seat off and not taking the side panels off also. I guess i have seen the light on this one. Anyway, we will get you some side panels by the time you are ready to ride. How does that saying go? "No good deed goes unpunished" RandyA

This brought up memories of my hot rod Chevelle. I always kept a Holly hammer close by. RandyA

My first suspicion is you have a stuck float. Try hitting the carb bowl with a small hammer. RandyA

Warning light on my '87
Venturous Randy replied to dkaiser's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Probably right! RandyA -
If you looked, it does have a 1300 cover on the side of the engine rather than the YICS cover. Maybe it is a 1300 that someone has replaced the engine with due to a 2nd gear problem. But for this, the bike would most likely have 113,000 miles on it. Then again, maybe someone did not know how to fix the speedometer squeal and replaced it. It does look clean. I am just glad it is WAY too far from Tennessee. RandyA

Or, it could be his superior electrical engineering prowess. RandyA -
First of all, I am very interested in how this turns out. If everything fits, this may be a great set up for the 1st gens. Low 1st and 2nd gear and wider spread gears up thru 5th and still not as high as the 2nd gens due to the lower V-max rear gear. When you get everything apart, how about doing a teeth count comparison on each respective gear. Also, what are you going to do with the gears off the old shafts? This would be a good fix for one of these 2nd gear fixers. Given the leak problem I encountered, I would replace the clutch rod seal and I would replace the seal where the shifter goes into the engine. Also take a good look at the seal where the drive shaft comes out. These are the basic seals that sometimes start to leak and are cheap and easy to replace with the engine out. RandyA

Nope you can't disable on your 87 because there is not one there! RandyA -
Lew, I think of it as a "late" 1st gen. Our's are the real 1st gens. RandyA

Hey Wayne, Laura and I like to camp at Bradley campground on the Gatlinburg side of Cherokee. It is good to get the bike in and out of and has nice clean hot showers if you are tent camping. The prices per night are a lot less than the KOA campgrounds. You can also catch it to be able to camp within a few feet of the river and they will take reservations. I don't have their number handy, but you can do a search. RandyA

PS---Randy, you got that extra gear out yet?!?!?!? I still haven't found the 1/8" radius gauge, and I'm thinkin about using my drill press and adjustable angle drill press vice to try this. WIll duplicate angle almost exactly. Whadya think? Internal parts comin this weekend, gettin itchy to start puttin her back together. DOn't know if I wanna take the time to cut the gears, maybe try to make you feel bad and just swap me out!!!! I will see what I can do about tearing it down tomorrow. I have been putting off tearing it apart to see how it looks after 60,000 miles anyway. RandyA RandyA

In todays paper there is a story about one of our local small towns installing picture radar out on the highway. It was also noted that warning tickets would be issued for the first month. Well, this local kid on a Honda decides to make a run at it and see what happens. He ends up getting clocked at 101 mph above the 55 mph speed limit. The only problem was he did not notice the Police Officer sitting there clocking on hand held radar both coming and going. The paper showed one of those pictures with the horizontal lines on the wall behind him and he don't look none too happy. At least the cop did not give chase, he just went by his house Sunday with a warrant for his arrest. Seems like the kid had a bit of a reputation on his Honda. RandyA

I plugged mine and it runs a lot better than it did. Just get some heavy duty plugs. RandyA -
First of all, if it is original, it will fold down. Have you tried to loosen the nut and see what it will do? RandyA

Drive Shaft
Venturous Randy replied to Ozmonster's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Qz, if your driveshaft is worn out from not being greased routinely, then the rear differential coupling is going to be bad also. It would probably be cheaper to buy a good used rear differential than try to get a coupling and get it set up correctly. Driveshafts go for many different prices, according to what the current need is. If you can not find one, I may have a good coupling on a spare differential that I have. RandyA -
I am not sure which day I am going to retire on as I do not know which day I am going to die on, as that will probably be the same day. RandyA

My wife and camped in our twenties, then it turned into motels. Later on when grandkids came along, she got into the camping bug again. I went along, but hated laying on the ground, even on an air mattress. Several years ago we were out on a ride thru the country and ran across a small camper that a guy had pulled behind his early Goldwing. I turned around and got to talking to him and ended up buying it for about $125. I was not sure what condition it was in as I did not even open it up. When I got it home, I opened it up and other than needing some canvas work, it was is good condition. We have been using it for a couple of years now and it tows good behind my 83 and it is very comfortable to sleep in with a full size air mattress. We had been using an air mattress with the built in 120 volt pump and still has a place for a battery powered external pump, but we just bought a new mattress with a built in battery pump. We are lucky here in east Tennessee to have access to so many great camping places. Many of the private camp grounds have nice showers and are only about $15 to $20 per night. I am now looking forward to going camping this summer and in the past I used to dread it, but did it for the wife and grand kids. RandyA
