    My 83 standard had a radio mounted in it when I got it using a plastic cover from Cycle Sound. Over the years it got in bad shape. I made a cover similar to the one shown and the radio went straight down. I then made a stiffer one and made it so the radio mounted at a 30 degree angle. This made the CD work better and made it also easier to get the CD's out and even change them on the run. I have taken some pictures to help anyone contemplating doing this. It is a bit of work and I did use some good thick aluminum sheet. When I was finished making what I wanted, I painted it with black "wrinkle" paint. This give it a surface texture and covers some of the blemishes. As you can see, I also installed some switches. These go to my fog/running lights, the rear light bars, the radar detector and two sets of strobe lights in the headlight bucket. RandyA

    For many of us, this is going to be the first nice weekend without rain in a long time. And, alot of us are planning on getting some therapy riding in.     As noted, not only do we not have vehicle inspections here in Tennessee, we also do not have a state income tax!!! RandyA

    Make sure while you have the rear wheel off that you take out the driveshaft and grease it. And, the Zerk fittings are the way to go and are easy to install. RandyA

    Not too long ago, a Sunday drive of a couple of hundred miles with a stop for a meal was about $25 or less. Now I am looking at a lot more than that. It may get to the point that the random rides that we now use as therapy may get fewer and farther between. What used to be a cheap form of entertainment is no longer that way and is getting worse. It is easy to justify using the bike for the needed transportation such as commuting back an forth to work. But, how about those times we hit the road just to ride, with no particular destination? Are we now being irresponsible with our resources just to get out and ride? RandyA

    Gig, the best thing you can do for your bike is to upgrade your headlight system to what is on the 86/93 Ventures. I did on my 83 and it helped tremendously. It does take a bit to do it such as; headlight bucket, adjustment mechanism, frame dash mounts on, left side upper frame, small connector strip under headlight that mounts to both upper fairings and the ring around the headlight. It is a bit of work, but it does help a lot and looks much better. You will be getting the headlight out of the tunnel. RandyA

    Do any of you have any experience with the HID lighting systems? Even though I ugraded my headlight on my 83 to an 86 up version, which was a great improvement and have a PIAA bulb, which also helped, I still want more. I am now seeing the HID headlight being offered at a more reasonable price. This appears to be more than just replacing the bulb, but I am not real familiar with the HID system. Anybody got any feedback on this? I know this system has been around on autos for a few years.     As I have stated about Avons on my 83, I love em and I hate em. Up to about 70/75, they are great, above that and I get a rear end wobble. I now have 10,000 miles on them and as long as I keep my speed down, they are fine. I honestly feel there is something unique to a 1st gen and Avons. I would love to have someone swap wheels and tires with someone with something besides Avons and make a run and see how it feels. I just know that I have run Elites and ME880's and in the other 80,000 miles before the Avons, the bike never felt the way it does now with the Avons. RandyA

    Those look real good. I just hope they do not get in the way of your collector. I took my collector with me when we put the gussets in and it was still close. Anyway, that's something else to worry about. RandyA

    I am so proud of you guys and so glad you are sharing your experiences on this 2nd gear fix. I just hate to think of how many early 1st gens have been scrapped out because of 2nd gear. These old bikes are worth being brought back to their original glory. RandyA

    Hey Sherrie, Eck made a good suggestion on the motorcycle safety trainer. Also, there are motorcycle specific lawyers available that really know the best way to handle a motorcycle case. I see them advertising on tv. We wish you the best. RandyA

    Your 86 will fit on a 4X8 foot trailer nicely. That is what I hauled squidley's 86 on. You might want to go by the local motorcycle shop and check on their bullitin board, or even ask if they know someone that may lend or rent you one. It needs to be one that is at least rated at 1,000 pounds. RandyA

    Ok fm, if you rode your bike and it was running poorly after sitting awhile, I bet that you need to clean out your pilot jets. Clogged up pilot jets will do a big number on how the bike runs. That would be either #40 or #42 in the picture. The holes are very small, but they can have a big impact. RandyA
