  1. I am running an Avon on the front and an Elite III on the back and I feel it is the best of both worlds for a 1st gen. RandyA
  2. Very interesting condor. If my memory serves me correctly, didn't the 1st set of four diaphragms go for about $160 and that is just for the rubber. We are talking about a bucks worth of material here without the slides being included. I think it would be great if someone could come up with a way to supply diaphragms at a reasonable price, but I do not think this is the way to go. Good post, I appreciate you doing it. RandyA
  3. After you get a few miles on them, give us a report as to how they feel at higher speeds, like 70mph and up. I hope you do not encounter what many of us have at 70 and up on a 1st gen. BTW, the Elite III feels good so far to about 85mph that I put on the rear. RandyA
  4. Now that you have given us more clarification, yes, they really are to be commended. Thanks for the story. RandyA
  5. Thanks Bummer. That is a shame as it was a nice magazine. RandyA
  6. You may be confusing Thom with Thom440. RandyA
  7. I like RoadRunner also as the articles are great and the photography is fantastic. Another magazine similar to that is Motorcycle ESCAPE Magazine. You can look it up by that name. It is also very interesting to read and talks about a lot of different places to ride. RandyA
  8. Thom, I just pulled Deland FL up on radar and it looks like you are on the wet side of the eye wall. Looks like a big rain train going in circles down there. Hope you do ok. RandyA+
  9. Well, hey Thom, I was wondering how you were doing. Did you give up on watering your yard this week? RandyA
  10. It's ok, go on to Gulf Shores. Fay likes Thom so much she don't want to leave him. RandyA
  11. I thought he was talking about a National Guard helicopter. RandyA
  12. The 83's do not have a bleed point at the top of the line near the steering. You can break the connection loose and bleed if you want. Are you also bleeding the antidive units. That is part of the system. It sounds like you have pushed a lot of fluid thru it but not getting a peddle as in building up pressure. If you keep pumping it without bleeding, does it build up any pressure? RandyA
  13. On this last E-3 I put on the rear of my bike before Asheville, I tried the axle between jackstands and thought I had done a pretty good job. After a few runs to about 80, I was feeling some bounce in the rear. So, I took the tire/wheel back off Tuesday night and took it by the shop I bought it from(I changed it). Without removing any weights, he put it on his machine and it come up 3/4 ounce out of balance. He removed all the weights and started again and balanced it. I put it back on last night and rode it to work today, but probably did not get over 45 to and from work thru town. I may make a better run in a few minutes as I am going for a ride. So far with all the tires I have had on that rim, it almost always takes about the same weight in the same area. I suspect I have a wheel balance issue more than a tire balance issue. RandyA
  14. Yes, I do this also. It is a form of rationization that this delay must be for a reason. If you keep in mind that at 30mph you are traveling at 44 feet per second, that second earlier to the intersection would have put me just about at her front bumper when she came out into the intersection. I would also have had to steer right for a fraction of a second to go left. That would have made it even worse. Thanks for the comments. I really don't know what they were up to at 7:00 in the morning, but they did not seem to know where they were going RandyA
  15. no, that's not quarter mile times. If I had been about a second quicker getting to a low visability intersection in my neighborhood, I would have been T-boned in the right side. About three blocks from my house this morning, I was coming over a slight hill and caught sight of a car coming up to a stop sign that was going to fast to get stopped in time. I layed on the brakes and airhorns. When the woman came to a stop, her front end was about a foot from the yellow centerline. She was blocking my lane completely. I got stopped a couple feet before I contacted her front bumper. As we were sitting in the intersection with her not moving, I looked in the car and it was two young Mexican looking women and they were still not looking at me. They were gesturing at each other like they were trying to figure out which way to turn. We never did make eye contact with me staring straight at them. I decided that the best thing for me to do was to do a sharp left and ease around the front of their car. I would have sat there if it had not been for me being concerned about someone coming across the hill and rearending me. We have had a big problem for awhile now with Mexicans driving without a license and any insurance. It is a routine thing to look in the daily police records in the paper and see Mexican sounding names getting charged with DUI. no license or insurance. I have aready increased my uninsured motorist coverage, but I doubt if it is enough. What's worse is this situation is constantly getting worse, not better and I don't feel there is anything we can do about it. RandyA
  16. Did you go "Don't Laz me bro"....sorry, couldn't help it. If you were going 68 on a 2nd gen, you must have been registering at least 75 on the speedometer. As far as getting a ticket on a motorcycle, I believe laser is a lot more accurate than radar, unless you are the ONLY vehicle around as radar is not discriminating enough for a motorcycle in any traffic, and this is traffic a half mile behind you. I got a ticket doing 45 in a 30 as I sped up to make a left hand turn in a "Y" intersection to have plenty of room for oncoming traffic. I was in my wife's car and had only one other ticket in 38 years. I ended up paying a fee to go to a defensive driving class, which was quite good. I don't know about there, but here you have to pay court costs along with the ticket cost if you lose. You may be better off just to chalk it up as education, and education is expensive. RandyA
  17. So far I have been happy with the E-3 that replaced the Avon on the back of my 83. I have not made a speed run of 100mph, but it does not seem to wobble around as much as the Avon did on the back in the 80mph range. I still have the Avon on the front. So far, my tire recommendation on a 1st gen is an E-3 on the back and an Avon on the front, until they release an E-3 for the front of a 1st gen. RandyA
  18. Take my please, but ya got to keep her!!! RandyA
  19. I don't complain about the quality of my air horns. I bought them on sale at Harbor Freight, which is about 1/2 mile from my house. I paid about $9 for them on sale, but I did have to paint the horn part gloss black as they were red. I have been using these for several years and occasionally I will buy another set on sale and since I now have a seperate compressor hooked to each horn, they are loud. Did I also say they were cheap? RandyA
  20. How about this one? RandyA http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-Yamaha-XVZ1300-Venture-Royal-Wiring-Harness_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35594QQihZ020QQitemZ300250225723QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
  21. Sounds like a good winter project Dave. There have been several of on here that have done the 2nd gear repair. I did mine about nine years ago by doing an undercut on the leading edge of the 2nd gear dogs and the 5th gear slots. I put 60,000 more miles on it and swapped in a 86 gear set. It still was not jumping in 2nd, but I was getting a bit of rattle while the bike was in neutral on the side stand. New washers should fix it. I just gave that gearset to Muffinman at Asheville. If you think you are interested in doing the repair, there are several on here that can help you. It is not hard to do if you have good mechanical skills. Just do some research and let us know what you want to do. RandyA
  22. Are you sure that crack is not supposed to be there? Check around the rotor and see if there are three equally spaced cracks. RandyA
  23. Hey Bob, it was a pleasure meeting you and your wife. We are glad you are safely home. RandyA
  24. Sounds like a typical form letter to me. RandyA
  25. Wow Arthur, the video was so good I felt like I was there......well, I guess I was since I was the lead bike. Actually, I did not realize you were videoing that ride. If you remember, for the part of the ride in this video, the temperature went from 72 degrees at the top to about 82 degrees by the time we got back down to the BRP, where we made the turn. Thanks, this was really good. RandyA
