This last fall Laura and I spent four days in Hilton Head, SC. While there, we toured some condo units. I asked about the problem with hurricanes and was told that due to the lay of the land that hurricanes do not cause a problem with Hilton Head. I said, "Do what?". Yep, I was told that they do not have hurricanes there. I don't wish anything bad on Hilton Head, but that is about the least bike friendly place I have ever been. Many of the areas you could not get into if you were on a motorcycle. Talk about a bunch of snotty people. Anyway, the one I am waiting on is going to be called "Laura", which is on the list this year. That one is probably going to be a doozy. RandyA

scraping noise again
Venturous Randy replied to nowindinmyhair's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The reason I suspected the shaft breaking at the nut first was if this happens, the output shaft is still contained and the u-joint coupling splines will contain the driveshaft/u-joint coupler, but what you end up getting is a lot of meshing on the two 90 degree gears. After a while it will get so bad that it tears up the teeth like yours did. Remember, what keeps the gear mesh in the correct range is the nut on the u-joint coupler. If the nut breaks, you can still ride the bike for awhile, it will just get more and more noisy until the gears or bearing fails. It appears you rode it for a while with severe gear mesh problems, with the nut broke off. Again, the nut breaking on the output shaft is not a real uncommon problem. It is just most will hear the increased noise and investigate it before more severe damage is done.. RandyA- 18 replies

scraping noise again

This may be a chicken or egg thing. I suspect the shaft broke first at the u-joint causing the rest of the damage. This happened to several members a while back. RandyA- 18 replies

The headlight swap from an 89 to an 84 is a great swap and big improvement. You will need to swap the headlight bucket, frame that mounts the dash, the left side frame that holds the upper fairing, the adjustment assembly, the small bracket under the headlight that holds the split fairings together and the ring around the headlight. This is one of the best improvements from an 83-85 to an 86 up. RandyA

Tires....again

I am running an Avon on the front and an Elite III on the back and I feel it is the best of both worlds for a 1st gen. RandyA -
Ebay Diaphragms
Venturous Randy replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Very interesting condor. If my memory serves me correctly, didn't the 1st set of four diaphragms go for about $160 and that is just for the rubber. We are talking about a bucks worth of material here without the slides being included. I think it would be great if someone could come up with a way to supply diaphragms at a reasonable price, but I do not think this is the way to go. Good post, I appreciate you doing it. RandyA -
After you get a few miles on them, give us a report as to how they feel at higher speeds, like 70mph and up. I hope you do not encounter what many of us have at 70 and up on a 1st gen. BTW, the Elite III feels good so far to about 85mph that I put on the rear. RandyA

Hey THOM was that you today in Deland??
Venturous Randy replied to M61A1MECH's topic in Watering Hole
You may be confusing Thom with Thom440. RandyA -
I like RoadRunner also as the articles are great and the photography is fantastic. Another magazine similar to that is Motorcycle ESCAPE Magazine. You can look it up by that name. It is also very interesting to read and talks about a lot of different places to ride. RandyA

Thom, I just pulled Deland FL up on radar and it looks like you are on the wet side of the eye wall. Looks like a big rain train going in circles down there. Hope you do ok. RandyA+

ARRRGGG! Brakes suck.
Venturous Randy replied to shriva's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The 83's do not have a bleed point at the top of the line near the steering. You can break the connection loose and bleed if you want. Are you also bleeding the antidive units. That is part of the system. It sounds like you have pushed a lot of fluid thru it but not getting a peddle as in building up pressure. If you keep pumping it without bleeding, does it build up any pressure? RandyA -
On this last E-3 I put on the rear of my bike before Asheville, I tried the axle between jackstands and thought I had done a pretty good job. After a few runs to about 80, I was feeling some bounce in the rear. So, I took the tire/wheel back off Tuesday night and took it by the shop I bought it from(I changed it). Without removing any weights, he put it on his machine and it come up 3/4 ounce out of balance. He removed all the weights and started again and balanced it. I put it back on last night and rode it to work today, but probably did not get over 45 to and from work thru town. I may make a better run in a few minutes as I am going for a ride. So far with all the tires I have had on that rim, it almost always takes about the same weight in the same area. I suspect I have a wheel balance issue more than a tire balance issue. RandyA

Yes, I do this also. It is a form of rationization that this delay must be for a reason. If you keep in mind that at 30mph you are traveling at 44 feet per second, that second earlier to the intersection would have put me just about at her front bumper when she came out into the intersection. I would also have had to steer right for a fraction of a second to go left. That would have made it even worse. Thanks for the comments. I really don't know what they were up to at 7:00 in the morning, but they did not seem to know where they were going RandyA

no, that's not quarter mile times. If I had been about a second quicker getting to a low visability intersection in my neighborhood, I would have been T-boned in the right side. About three blocks from my house this morning, I was coming over a slight hill and caught sight of a car coming up to a stop sign that was going to fast to get stopped in time. I layed on the brakes and airhorns. When the woman came to a stop, her front end was about a foot from the yellow centerline. She was blocking my lane completely. I got stopped a couple feet before I contacted her front bumper. As we were sitting in the intersection with her not moving, I looked in the car and it was two young Mexican looking women and they were still not looking at me. They were gesturing at each other like they were trying to figure out which way to turn. We never did make eye contact with me staring straight at them. I decided that the best thing for me to do was to do a sharp left and ease around the front of their car. I would have sat there if it had not been for me being concerned about someone coming across the hill and rearending me. We have had a big problem for awhile now with Mexicans driving without a license and any insurance. It is a routine thing to look in the daily police records in the paper and see Mexican sounding names getting charged with DUI. no license or insurance. I have aready increased my uninsured motorist coverage, but I doubt if it is enough. What's worse is this situation is constantly getting worse, not better and I don't feel there is anything we can do about it. RandyA

Did you go "Don't Laz me bro"....sorry, couldn't help it. If you were going 68 on a 2nd gen, you must have been registering at least 75 on the speedometer. As far as getting a ticket on a motorcycle, I believe laser is a lot more accurate than radar, unless you are the ONLY vehicle around as radar is not discriminating enough for a motorcycle in any traffic, and this is traffic a half mile behind you. I got a ticket doing 45 in a 30 as I sped up to make a left hand turn in a "Y" intersection to have plenty of room for oncoming traffic. I was in my wife's car and had only one other ticket in 38 years. I ended up paying a fee to go to a defensive driving class, which was quite good. I don't know about there, but here you have to pay court costs along with the ticket cost if you lose. You may be better off just to chalk it up as education, and education is expensive. RandyA

So far I have been happy with the E-3 that replaced the Avon on the back of my 83. I have not made a speed run of 100mph, but it does not seem to wobble around as much as the Avon did on the back in the 80mph range. I still have the Avon on the front. So far, my tire recommendation on a 1st gen is an E-3 on the back and an Avon on the front, until they release an E-3 for the front of a 1st gen. RandyA

I don't complain about the quality of my air horns. I bought them on sale at Harbor Freight, which is about 1/2 mile from my house. I paid about $9 for them on sale, but I did have to paint the horn part gloss black as they were red. I have been using these for several years and occasionally I will buy another set on sale and since I now have a seperate compressor hooked to each horn, they are loud. Did I also say they were cheap? RandyA
