CMS resoldering ?
Venturous Randy replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Your red flashing bulb should light up when an icon is showing. While you have the dash out, take the speedometer out and put some good grease down in the bottom inside where the cable comes thru around the bearing. RandyA -
Best of luck and we are thinking about you two. RandyA

Baron's and a whole lot of popping on decel
Venturous Randy replied to george_park's topic in General Tech Talk
Popping on decel is a typical exhaust leak pulling in oxygen under vacuum and firing. I bet you guys have a leak somewhere. RandyA -
For the last day of summer, it was a perfect day, beautiful blue sky, temps to 80 and rode some new mountains roads. Laura and I decided to go for a ride today and I took off in a direction I hardly ever go. It turned out to be a great ride on some mountain roads that I have never been on before and the scenery was fantastic. It was like a moving postcard. We ended up putting 140 miles on the bike and had dinner at a Chinese Buffet that was very good. So, for the last day of summer, it was a very good one. RandyA

I have had good success with Autolites for years. Advance Auto sells the ones for the Venture and they are real cheap. These older bikes seem sensitive to clean plugs and if you had a carb problem, make sure you change your plugs. RandyA

This has been a pretty good summer for us. We wanted to do more camping, but only camped at Asheville, which was great. I think I have put almost 7,000 miles on the bike this year, which is a little below normal, but the riding season is not over yet. I have had several close calls, but fortunately the airhorns did their job and got attention. High gas prices have probably hampered some as we used to be able to take a round trip of 150 miles and have a nice dinner for no more than $25. The bike has run good this year. We did have the problem with the truck hitting it and it being totaled, but that turned out good. Today has been a beautiful upper 70's degree day and I have not even got the bike out of the garage. In a few months I would give just about anything for a day like today. RandyA

Well, when you consider that to some people, they figure the amount of money they have in savings is the amount left on their credit card before it maxes out. RandyA

Sidestand kill switch
Venturous Randy replied to MikeM8560's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is exactly the symptoms I was having on my bike when I was at Asheville. It would crank over in neutral, but no fire. When I raised the side stand, it would fire. I finally found the problem and it was in the clutch switch wiring. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago with the starter turning over with it in gear with the side stand down. I had to stretch the little spring in the clutch master to make sure it pushed the clutch lever out completely. What I found on this last problem was the connection had come undone where the wires go from the clutch lever switch down behind my headlight. One quick check is to peel the cover back on the clutch lever switch and use an ohm meter to check the circuit while pulling the lever in and out. Let us know if this solves your problem and if it doesn't we can suggest other things. I would be surprised if it is your side stand switch with the symptoms you are describing. RandyA -
It drives us 1st genners crazy. That's why we make the 2nd genners ride in the back. If it is not the bike whinning, it's the 2nd gen rider. RandyA

Radiator fan
Venturous Randy replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you are running without your thermostat, you may increase cooling problems. Under load, the water can move thru the radiator so fast that it does not cool the water. Turning the by-pass valve does the same thing. Your 84 probably will not kick the fan on until it is at the edge of the red zone, if you gauge reads typically. RandyA -
I think Dale meant interested. Refer to Cheep/cheap post. RandyA

Radiator fan
Venturous Randy replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you going into the red zone? Many of these bikes do not turn on the fan until it is right at it, especially the earlier ones. You may need to check the connection on the switch. Take off the right side grill near the horns and you should be able to see the switch where the hose connects. These wire connections may need to be squeezed a little to fit tighter. How far is your gauge needle going up? RandyA -
Today. my signal lights quit working. I am real good about using my signal lights, so this was a big aggravation. When I got home, I pulled out my repair book and read up on the lights. I seemed to have power where I was supposed to so it looked like my relay was bad. When I pulled it out, I noticed it had a cover on it that could easily be disassembled. I took it apart and checked continuity and found a contact was not giving a good reading. I took a small piece of sand paper and doubled it over and rubbed it between the contacts. I plugged it back up and it is working fine. I have attached some pictures and you can see the contacts. RandyA

That drip is typically from oil migrating thru the stator wires. This is pretty common and more of a nuisance than anything. It would be a good idea to check your clutch reservior to make sure the slave is not leaking. RandyA

Thanks Mini, That is a great site, even for some of us locals. RandyA

CLASS Connector Problem
Venturous Randy replied to keikat02's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One other note, make sure your solder gun is very hot before you touch the pins. You actually do not want to over heat the pins for a long time as they are mounted in a plastic housing and it will melt around the pin. RandyA -
For a 1st gen, I like the Elite III on the back and Venom on the front. I feel my bike is a lot more stable with the E-3 at 70mph and up. I have not made a 100mph run on it yet, but so far it feels good. RandyA

Did You Know?
Venturous Randy replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have never heard this. Remember, Yamaha has a pretty good engine design team, they designed and built the great engine that was in the SHO Tarsus. The first year the SHO came out, I believe it was one of the quickest cars out. I believe it was even quicker than the 5.0 Mustang GTs. RandyA -

Well, if you are not going to stretch the truth a little bit, it"s not worth putting up!!! RandyA -
I think the 83's have less gussets and stuff to save weight, because they were a lot faster!!! RandyA

Gas prices up locally $0.45 already this morning to $4. Heard in city near by up to $5.05 for reg. Ike is going to cost everybody big time, no matter where you live. I wish the folks of Texas well, but it looks like you are going to get it! RandyA
