It started after sitting for six years, wow. You are going to get a lot of responses on here about what to do. RandyA -

'88 bad second gear?
Venturous Randy replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I bet it is a pin problem. RandyA -
I am still getting my moneys worth out of my old battery, when I replaced it with an Odessy, I put the old battery in my lawn tractor. RandyA

I just got an Odessy from Summit Racing for $131 delivered to my door. It was charged up and ready to go. I think it is summitracing.com. One suggestion on the Odessy batteries is to put a rubber pad under them that will absorb some of the bump. I have heard that several people have had a problem with the Odessy because of them being jarred around. I know that it REALLY helped my slow starts. I used to be anxious when turning the bike off when it was hot when I knew I was going to be starting it again a few minutes later. RandyA

Side cover oil leadk
Venturous Randy replied to Props's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If by AFT, you mean the small cover that covers the end of the gear assembly, there is no question about that cover having a drain and a bolt with a copper washer at the bottom hole. The statements here are about the bottom hole on the stator side cover having a drain hole and I do not believe it does. If it was not so late, I would go out in the garage and see if any of the tapped holes on the block have a drain. RandyA -
TAKE WARM CLOTHING!!! It will probably be cool there as there is a cool front moving thru. Also, pay attention to the other drivers as most of them will be looking off into the wild blue younder and not paying a lot of attention on where they are going. Good luck and have fun, RandyA

Side cover oil leadk

Ditto!!! I have had my side cover off several times and I have never seen a copper washer on any of the stator side cover bolts. RandyA -
One thing I am seeing is people running around in new cars with the head lights on, but no tail lights. Evidently the people are thinking that they don't need to turn their headlights on now that they are automatically on. I can not understand why any car company would make the head lights automatic and not include the tail lights in the curcuit. That just does not make sense. One statistic that was given out by the Tennessee Highway Patrol several years ago was 65% of people charged with drunk driving were initially pulled over for not running their head lights at night. So, you better be especially dilligent on watching out for those idiots. RandyA

We had another motorcycle/car crash yesterday morning. A 37 year old man was killed when a 17 year old girl pulled out in front of him on a 4-lane highway. It was a bit foggy, but evidently the girl did not look good enough to pull out. I rode in to work yesterday morning at about that same time and was irritated by the number of cars without any headlights on, but I am pretty sure he had his on. RandyA

Okie is a fast learner, he figured it out and reposted in only 27 minutes. RandyA -
I gotta agree with wpredock on this one. I have quit bidding on something because the cost was more than I was willing to pay. And, I figure in the shipping cost when I am bidding. RandyA

You may also have a problem with the CMS in the center of the dash. The headlight power runs thru it and there may be a problem with a cold solder joint. Usually, with this problem, the light does not go completely out, but gets real dim. RandyA

[quote name= Thought they were going to the lights but turns out they are actually going to some kind of an electrical plug that is mounted just behind the passenger seat. Its round with a cap on the end. Too small to be a standard 12v automotive plug.. I can drop a pic in later but I have NO clue what this is for. Any ideas?? Thanks for the help guys[/quote] I suspect it may be a connection the PO put on for a battery charger. RandyA

Not to sound like a pesimist, but we may very well be in the golden age of big bikes, as in SUV,s of the bike industry. What has kept the big/luxury market alive is a lot of disposible income. I am afraid that if things in this world does not soon start making a change for the better(this is not a political comment), I feel most motorcycle makers are going to go after the middle size efficent bikes. The buyers will prodominantly be going after gas mileage more than comfort. When the average car starts to get as good or better gas mileage than our bikes get, then the manufacturers will change too. RandyA

My camper loaded up weighs close to 450 pounds. Yes, all said so far is good and do think ahead. What caught me off guard when I first pulled mine was pulling away from a stop and making a turn, like at an intersection. Normally as you pull out and get a little speed, you lean into the turn. You almost have to do the opposite when pulling a trailer until you get a little speed. You have to turn more upright as the trailer wants to pull you over, especially if you are going any up hill. Stator??
Venturous Randy replied to DANJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you have another connection problem, cut it out and solder the matching wires together. Technically, any of the three wires on one side will work soldered to the other side. RandyA -
CMS resoldering ?
Venturous Randy replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Your red flashing bulb should light up when an icon is showing. While you have the dash out, take the speedometer out and put some good grease down in the bottom inside where the cable comes thru around the bearing. RandyA -
Best of luck and we are thinking about you two. RandyA

Baron's and a whole lot of popping on decel
Venturous Randy replied to george_park's topic in General Tech Talk
Popping on decel is a typical exhaust leak pulling in oxygen under vacuum and firing. I bet you guys have a leak somewhere. RandyA -
For the last day of summer, it was a perfect day, beautiful blue sky, temps to 80 and rode some new mountains roads. Laura and I decided to go for a ride today and I took off in a direction I hardly ever go. It turned out to be a great ride on some mountain roads that I have never been on before and the scenery was fantastic. It was like a moving postcard. We ended up putting 140 miles on the bike and had dinner at a Chinese Buffet that was very good. So, for the last day of summer, it was a very good one. RandyA

I have had good success with Autolites for years. Advance Auto sells the ones for the Venture and they are real cheap. These older bikes seem sensitive to clean plugs and if you had a carb problem, make sure you change your plugs. RandyA
