  1. I live in a city of about 58,000. I have two supercenters within 15 miles of my house. I am really not crazy about Walmart, but I do shop there. RandyA
  2. I drove to work this morning in a hard rain and the weather channel says it is 60°. Warmest weather since Oct. But, there is a cold front behind this rain that you are seeing. Friday is to be in the 30's and that is more in line with the 15 to 20° below normal we have seen for a month. We do need the rain here in east Tennessee as we are still in drought mode. RandyA
  3. What did it go for? It comes up as Input Error for me. RandyA
  4. What goes around, comes around. RandyA
  5. I would like to replace the walls on my little camper that I pull behind the bike. It is a Travelite, I believe, and I think they are no longer in business. I probably need about 12 square yards. Any suggestions on what would work good and where I could get some material? RandyA
  6. Don, were you not looking into another program similar to Paypal awhile back? What ever came of that? RandyA
  7. I feel I am lucky that I can drink a beer once in awhile and enjoy it. I also might buy a six-pack and it last for a month in the refrigerator. I grew up in a family where my dad was not like that. Either he was not drinking at all for years or when he drank one, he ended up getting drunk and repeating it over and over. My younger brother inherited that same gene. It is a shame how many lives have been destroyed with drugs and alcohol. My son's ex had a prescription drug problem and it has ruined her. Laura and I ended up raising the two kids. RandyA
  8. Looks like a very interesting bike. Just think of having the integral braking system like the 1st gens with ABS. That would be good. RandyA
  9. There have been times that I did not bid on stuff because they did not take Paypal. Awhile back I bid and won before I realized they did not take Paypal and it was a PIA to get a cashiers check to send to them. I learned my lesson on that one. RandyA
  10. Squidley, you are like me, I loved being around aircraft and spent four years in the USAF, but working on aircraft usually requires crawling up into some small holes, and I don't think either one of us would be good at that. RandyA
  11. If we wanted to make it late May, that may work good for some also. That time of year is beautiful around Asheville, but the Blue Ridge Parkway will not think it is springtime yet. Some of it does not bloom out much until June. Anyway, as I said, I am just dreaming about summer and seeing what some may be interested in. RandyA
  12. For awhile now I have been thinking about suggesting another Asheville, but like an extended M&E. This is not to compete with Vogal as I would love to get together like we did last year, except in mid June, which would be about two months before Vogal. We could make it even less planned out, camping, eating on the run or do the breakfast bashes and maybe even an afternoon hotdog feasting. If anyone wanted to go to Biltmore or another specific destination, it could be arranged, but not worry about making it a formal day outting. For those of that did or did not make Asheville last year, it was an alternative to Vogal as Lew and Charlene were not going to be available and we still wanted a south east get together. I believe about everybody that showed up had a pretty good time. I would not mind making the same KOA campground the meeting point as it worked out great for us and I did feel they did appreciate us being there. But, if we wanted to do this we could consider other options and a different campground. Anyway, just trying to get thru some PMS with the temps being 25 degrees below normal and dreaming about next summer. What do you all think? RandyA
  13. For almost a month now, we have been running 15 to 20 degrees below normal. Our normal temp for this time of year is around 53 degrees, right now it is 33 degrees. If this keeps up, this is going to be a miserable winter. We did have a couple of days around Thanksgiving that got up to normal and did get in a couple days of short rides, but this is not fun at all. If I was riding I could fill the bike up for about $7 instead of almost $20. RandyA
  14. I think it is wise for you to at least consider this option. You may luck out and be able to sell it and relieve yourself of that financial burden. I also believe there are a tremendous amount of other bike owners that may do the same thing. We got a guy in the lab here that this last summer went from a Vulcan to a Fat Boy and now he is making $450 a month payments, but he just HAD to have a Harley. With or without a loan, GM will not be shutting down. They may cut back some and maybe even go Chapter 11, but hopefully it will not effect your job. But, if it does, I would love to see you come to east Tennessee and we do have the TVA, since you now have power plant on your resume. It seems to be doing so good that the CEO or Director(the big guy) just got a $500,000 a year raise, not bonus but raise. You would fit in real good down here and I think you a Lonna would both enjoy it. RandyA
  15. When ever you remove the antidive units, there are two o-rings around two holes. These holes direct fluid thru the AD units. When you activate the AD units with brake fluid pressure, you are closing or restricting the shock fluid flow, making the shock stiffer. If you put a plate over these holes, you are in essence completely blocking fluid flow. Therefore, it would be as if the AD units are completely activated all the time. I can not see any other way it would be. RandyA
  16. Just curious, if you block off the anti dives with a plate, does that not make it like the antidives are engaged all the time? Isn't what the antidive unit is doing is restricting flow thru the shock valving mechanism? Enquireing minds want to know. RandyA
  17. I suspect he has a cracked drum on the starter clutch housing. RandyA
  18. I pulled it up again a minute ago and did not get a virus warning. RandyA
  19. Hey Ken, thanks for the great photo. Have you run out of new roads to ride yet? Here in east Tennessee, western North Carolina and south west Virginia, there are so many great motorcycle roads within 100 miles, I will probably never get them all ridden. RandyA
  20. I am at work and got a virus detection on this post, a first for me. RandyA
  21. Just remember, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. RandyA
  22. We have been running about 10 to 20 degrees below normal here in east Tennessee for about a month now. Maybe we are going to get winter out of the way early this time. RandyA
  23. The only good way to fix this is take the speedo out and put grease on the bushing on the inside of the speedometer at the very bottom where the cable comes thru. WD40 is not a high speed type lubricant and may do more damage in the long run. If you keep riding the bike it will not be a problem after a while because it will destroy the speedometer and the noise will go away. This is a real common problem on these old bikes, especially when the weather turns cooler. RandyA
  24. RomTom, first of all I want to welcome you to this great bunch of folks. They will do just about anything they can do to help with your problems. Second, thanks for sharing your health concerns and you will end up on many prayer lists. We all wish you the best on your continued improvements. Third, welcome to the world of Ventures, especially the early 1st gens(83/85), they are great bikes. Now, as already noted there are three real good problem areas mentioned and they are all somewhat common on the Venture. Even if you are not mechanically or electrically inclined, we can help you resolve your problems. It is like eating an elephant, it is just one bite at a time. Even if the start switch is the problem, you will still need to put upgrading the fuse box at the top of the list. It is not hard and if you do not know how to solder, it is now time to learn. You can pick up a five or six slot holder with the blade fuses and to replace what you got, just start on one end and replace each set of wires one at a time. Before you know it, you will have it rewired. It just takes a few basic tools and I feel you will be able to do it. As you have already figured out, finding someone else to work on these bikes may be dificult and expensive. But, again let me assure that there are many folks on here that will do just about anything to help you out. And, the more you can do yourself, even with help, the more you will become one with the bike. Just don't worry about asking all kinds of questions and you got off to a good start. RandyA
  25. As stated by several, the Odyssey 680 is a good choice. I had replaced the cables and cleaned and lubed the starter, but I still got the slow start when hot. Sometimes it was at the inopportune time if it had not started. When I got the Odyssey, it made a tremendous difference and now I do not worry about starting when it is hot or I have stalled it for some reason in traffic. The only thing I have heard negative about the Odyssey is they will not take severe jolting. To try to help this a little, I put a couple pieces of medium soft rubber under the battery. RandyA
