  1. Ya done good David, Thanks for posting the story. You are correct in that we all need to pay attention as bad things can happen quickly. RandyA
  2. John, as already said, the linked braking system works good, especially on these big heavy bikes. Seveal things to consider, when slowing down quickly, about 70% of your braking effectiveness comes from the front brake. If, in an emergency stop you revert back to habit rather than being able to do a feel for the best "front to back" pressures, you will definately compromise maximum braking effectiveness. When linked, it is automatic. Anytime on gravel, using brakes or not, you have to give into the law of bearings and friction. When on gravel, it can be like a bearing with minimal friction. Minimal friction on a bike, especially one as big and top heavy as ours is not a good thing. RandyA
  3. John, there is a mark on it but I have found that if the tops if the letters are pointing toward the 5 oclock position, it is correct and will not by-pass. RandyA
  4. Rez, on my 83, when it has sat for awhile, this is my routine and it has worked well for me, even at 22 degrees last Saturday after setting for at least three weeks with out being touched. I turn on the ignition and using the kill switch, I will flip it off and on several times until I hear the fuel pump only click a time or two. I may do this at least a half dozen times. I then pull the choke lever(I know enrichener) all the way to the left. I then hit the start button without touching the throttle. On my bike and the last Yamaha I had, no throttle worked best, even when it was hot. You may want to look at the adjustment on the choke cable as it may not be right. Give this sequence a try and see if it helps, and this is assuming that everything is in good order. RandyA
  5. This evening at about 6:30, Laura and I decided to ride out in the cage and get a bite to eat. We were driving on a four lane city street that has a divided island except for an occasional turn through to the left. The speed limit is 40mph. We were going to be making a right turn at an intersection and there is a turning lane that is several hundred feet long. Before this one, there is another turning lane that goes into a small business district, but it ends and goes back to two lanes for just a hundred feet or so. The problem is when a person turns into the first turning lane, meaning to turn into the second. This area of the street is marginally lit with street lights and when I was coming up to the turn lane, I hesitated for a second to make sure I was not going into the first one. As I looked forward from checking the mirror, I realized I was about to hit a guy that was walking across the street, at least 200 feet from the intersection in dark clothes and absolutely oblivious to oncoming traffic. I barely missed him and realized that if I had not hesitated for a second or two to go into the turning lane, I may have centered him at about 25mph. It scared the crap out of me. He did not seem to get in any hurry to get out of the street. It just made me realize how quickly our lives can change, even when we think we are doing things the right way. RandyA
  6. It is so hard for me to understand why that in one motorcycle/cage crash, when the cage driver is CLEARLY at fault, it does not seem to matter because the other guy was on a motorcycle. Then you have a case like this. Some of these prosecutors run amuck and don't listen to any reason. Sometimes it does bite them in the butt. Is this prosecute running for re election? RandyA
  7. That is no doubt a beautiful 1st gen. Anyone want to make a bet as to how much it will go for? RandyA
  8. I also shift most of the time without using the clutch going into 3rd, 4th & 5th. I can actually do it smoother than using a clutch. I guess this is so because I pay more attention. I don't find down shifting is as easy for me so I don't do it. It does take a bit of coordination on letting off the throttle slightly as you shift, but once you do it a few times you be amazed at how smooth you can do it. I also do not do this when I am accellerating hard up thru the gears. RandyA
  9. I have an 8 year old HP Pavilion Mellinum that I have upgraded over the years with XP and another memory board. I have evidently gotten in to something that has infected it real bad. I have used spybot on it over the years and it has helped, but even spybot is not working good now. A guy at work suggested I go on line under Averi and use a program there. I did and Cyberdefender came up and did a scan. It is telling me that I have 59 infections and I need to spend about $30 to get them removed. I don't mind the $30, but I have heard that some of these programs are full of problems also. Any of you computer gurus got and good, cheap, effective suggestions? Thanks, RandyA
  10. I put the Odyssey 680 in my 83 back in the summer and have not one time been concerned about a hot start. I also went out in the garage Saturday morning with it 20 degrees and flipped the ignition on, flipped the emergency stop off and on several times to fill the carbs and then hit the starter. It started right up and idled smooth with the choke on. I was happy. And this is without any type charger hooked up. RandyA
  11. Thanks Bill for mentioning the name of that show. I was racking my brain trying to remember it. RandyA
  12. My son has an FZ1 with an upgraded exhaust and has been rejetted that pulled 130hp on a dino off the rear wheel. I have ridden it a couple of times and it is a real trip when the RPM's start climbing. It takes about everything just to hang on. It has the handle bars that are higher than yours. RandyA
  13. Several years ago I worked for a company that was based out of Fort Wayne, IN as the Quality Manager, even tho I lived in Tennessee. I flew a lot back and forth on the company airplane. One afternoon we were loading up and I noticed another plane, about a six pasenger, loading up also. We taxied out before them and took off and they took off about 10 to 15 minutes later on the same runway. At less than 1,000 feet they flew into a flock of geese with several coming in thru the windshield. They ended up crashing and I believe 3 or 4 were killed. RandyA
  14. The pilot used to fly F-4 Phantoms during the 70's. One comment I heard about current pilots is that everyone flying commercial has a lot of experience, due to the younger ones being cut back. RandyA
  15. For those that went last year and are coming back, are there any suggestions? The area where we camped, which ended up being the main congregation point, was a beautiful area by the lilly pond. It was a bit of a walk up a steep trail to the bathroom(probably more for the women, not that the men were in better shape), but this area would be hard to beat. As we get closer to then, I hope if there are any suggestions, you will throw them out. RandyA
  16. There are two sides to every story and in my opinion, bikers done this to themselves. The Harley groups come in there with their straight pipes and racket and the other group is a whole set of other problems. I would say that in general, the Harley group brings a lot of money into the area, but I have heard stories about many businesses closing down for the week for the other group. This is due to people not paying for restaurant bills and a lot of other things. RandyA
  17. Dan, a tire made in 1988 is 21 years old this year. RandyA
  18. I get off work at 4:30 and drive directly into the sun on the way home. The level of the sun has been right at redlight level if I am the 1st or 2nd car. I noticed this afternoon that the sun was a bit higher than it has been for awhile. So, I had the same thought also, hang in there, it won't be long. RandyA
  19. Vise Grips? RandyA
  20. It is supposed to be down to around zero F here in the next couple of days so yesterday evening I thought I had better check the antifreeze in all my vehicles. The first thing I had to do was run over to Walmart to buy another checker as I could not find the one I had. I figured as I was there I would buy a gallon of antifreeze. I still can not let myself buy the 50/50 mix and pay almost the same price as regular. And, I always keep a gallon or so of distilled water on hand. Everything checked good, but one of my Maximas was almost 2 quarts low. I must have a leak somewhere, but I have not noticed it marking it's territory. So, when the weekend gets here and the really cold temperatures, I will just snuggle down and stay in. RandyA
  21. Just before I turned 14, when all my friends were starting to smoke, I got a brand new 125 Ducati Bronco. At that time a pack of cigs and a gallon of gas were about the same, as it usually has been over the years. I found that I could have a lot more fun on a gallon of gas that a pack of cigarettes. Well, 44 years later I am still riding a motorcycle and a gallon of gas is probably less than half a pack of cigarettes(at least at the present time). I dated a couple of girls that smoked, but married one that didn't. RandyA
  22. Just saw the movie this evening and thought it was a classic Eastwood movie. I thought it was a pretty good. RandyA
  23. Yep, I agree with carl on this one. RandyA
  24. Very well stated Murph. RandyA
  25. When my bike was hit by the truck and totaled by State Farm, I was real pleased with the way they handled it. I have Allstate as my carrier on liability and uninsured motorist and they helped get the paperwork in motion with State Farm. I think the thing that helped me the most was when I met the adjuster and he walked up to my bike and stated "That sure is a nice looking bike" I guess when you are an insurance adjuster and you are getting ready to look at a 25 year old Yamaha, you don't have very high expectations to start with.
