  1. I agree, but it seems to be that for some, if they had tools with them, they do not know to bleed the pressure off if the brakes get tight. RandyA
  2. If you are going to be doing any work on your brakes, before you go for a test ride, make sure you have an 8mm or 5/16 wrench with you. If for some reason your brakes start getting hot, a quick temporary fix is to release the brake bleed and relieve the pressure. I keep reading where people work on the brakes and go for a ride and it either gets gets hot or locks up and they are stranded until they can get someone to bring a trailer and wrestle it up on it. Another thing I am seeing is people with a brake pedal that is sticking or not coming back to the correct stop and not bleeding back into the reservoir, causing the same problem. RandyA
  3. Do you know if it was the left or right caliper that got tight? The left one is linked with the rear and if the pedal was not coming back up to the stop, it would not bleed back into the reservoir correctly. This usually becomes a problem with the back brake more than the front, but can happen on the front. If it was the right, the small hole in the handle bar reservoir may be stopped up. You are real lucky you did not dump it. RandyA
  4. Man,I hate that for ya. How does that saying go, "If it wern't for bad luck, you would have any luck at all". That's bad, but it could have been worse. RandyA
  5. Anybody out there got a good right front signal light for a 1st gen? Lowell sent me one, but I need the other right one. I need to either send the left one back to Lowell or send him a little money. Anybody want to trade a right one for a left one? RandyA
  6. The trick is to let your wife "accidentally" see you riding another woman on the back of your bike. Either she will get interesting in riding with you or take the bike in the divorce. RandyA
  7. Duh, I rolled up and saw 84 and did not go up to yours. Go on ebay and type in PIAA and you will get some. RandyA
  8. Looks to me like for a "No Reserve" sale, it has a reserve of $2,000. RandyA
  9. Hey mother, about the only way you are going to get much improvement out of your lighting is to update to the headlight bucket from an 86 up 1st gen, like I did several years ago. It does take getting some parts together but it really does make a difference. I also have a PIAA bulb and some running lights. RandyA
  10. Inseam challenged here. On my 83 I picked up a Corbin seat that needed a little work off Ebay and while I had it apart, I shaved about 1 1/2 inches out of the driver seat. I also do not run a lot of air in the rear shock unless I am loaded up. Usually about 25/35 pounds. I do keep the dampener setting on 4 and have not had a problem bottoming out. I run about 10 pounds in the front struts and that works well. If you are running stock front springs, about a half ounce more fluid helps the front shocks from bottoming out. Of all the things that I have tried, the cut down seat has helped the most and it is a lot more comfortable. RandyA
  11. Ditto, the plunger in the master cylinder has to be up so the bleed orifice is effective. If the pedal is allowing the plunger to not return to it's seat, it will block flow back to the reservoir. As already stated, check the brake pedal movement first and it may solve your problem. RandyA
  12. You beat me. The tops of the letters should be in the 5: oclock position. Randya
  13. I built a set of arm rests for my 83 and they have helped Laura tremendously, especially with her having three shoulder surgeries. RandyA
  14. OHHH mannn, yes thom, I do know how you feel. At least you did not have to come up with a video to get her to admit it. I ended up settling for almost $3,200 and kept the bike. I sure hope you do that good as your bike is newer and obviously has more damage than mine. All I can say is keep a close eye on ebay and let us know what you need. I wish you the best buddy. RandyA
  15. I guess I am one of those guys that feel things happen for a reason. Like many here, I started riding early, for me when I was 14. At that time most all of my friends were getting into tobacco, but I had more fun with a gallon of gas than a pack of cigarettes. Last bike was a 250 DT1 Yamaha after getting out of USAF. Sold it in 73 and did not ride until over 20 years later. Laura and I had taken a cruise to the Bahamas and was scheduled to go out snorkeling. For some reason the trip was canceled and there we stood at the meeting place not knowing what to do. While looking around, I saw a guy renting little Honda 50 scooters. We walked over and looked at them and ended up renting one for the day. I was extremely apprehensive due to the time from being on a bike, being a long way from home and the traffic driving on the left side of the road. We had so much fun we rented it again the next day. When we got home I told my dad about the fun on the bike and he informed me he had an acquaintance that had a bike he desperately needed to get rid of. It was a Yamaha 850 Triple Special. It was a good running bike with the fairing and Yamaha hard bags. The only problem I had was it was real tall and with me being inseam challenged, it was a problem. While out riding one day and stopped at a gas station, two guys pulled up on 1st gen Ventures. I asked if I could set on one and was hooked. I started looking for one and between the paper and swap & shop, there were three available locally. One was not much more than a parts bike the guy wanted too much for, one had a lot of miles and a slick rear tire and then there was the one I ended up buying. The guy that had it bought it a year earlier and had put 109 miles on it and was still making payments. I ended up making him an offer that was a bit below what he was asking, and he told me that was less than what he still owed. The bike had 23,000 miles. We ended up making a deal and he only asked if I could wait about 6 weeks for the title so he could get it paid off. This had become a major ordeal between him and his wife. We have now had this bike 13 years next month and have put over 97,000 more miles on it. It has literally become part of who we are. We also ran into a really good deal on a little camper and have some great camping trips, especially Vogal and Asheville. We are so looking forward to this summer as we are both aware that our days of getting away on this bike will be numbered due to age and health issues. Another thing that has become a big part of my life is my daily visits to this site and the many friends that we have made. These events have all been for a reason. BTW, the pin is of an early 1st gen, like mine. Oh, and I never did get into using tobacco. RandyA
  16. That is the way it works for me. It refreshs when you back out and go in again. Try hitting refresh and see what it does. RandyA
  17. Deb, this has been the longest week for me. It has been Iowa temps here in east Tennessee for a while now. It is supposed to be 60 tomorrow and Sunday and be in the mid 60's for some of next week. I am so anxious for some warmer weather I can not stand it. Good luck on getting around the snow. RandyA Oh, you could get out your video camera and video your husband getting the bike down your driveway, He may end up on Funniest Home Videos and you could win some money.
  18. Glad you are making headway Ken. I wish you the best and maybe I can camp across from you again sometime. Laura says hi and loved your camper. RandyA
  19. Being 58 years old, I have gone thru over 50 winters that I have some recollection. I don't know of any that I have gotten more tired of than this one. This one seems to have gotten off to an early start and seems to have gone on for about six months already and we have a couple of cold months left. All I can say is I really do not understand how you folks from up north deal with this. Being from the mountains of east Tennessee, our winters are not as cold as north of us and our summers are usually not as hot. I remember being stationed in Rantoul Illinois, about 100+ miles south of Chicago in March of 1969 in the USAF and it was bitter cold, kinda like today here. I remember thinking that with it that cold in the winter, at least it should not be that hot in the summer, since I was going to be there through August. Boy, was I wrong, August was miserable. RandyA
  20. TCI going out? RandyA
  21. Remember, if you are using the rear brake on an unmodifed 1st gen, you are also using the front brake. This does fall into the 70/80% efficency of the front brake. Using the hand brake ADDS to the amount of front brake the bike is seeing when using the rear brake. You all are talking like using the rear brake is ONLY on the rear. RandyA
  22. Miracles never cease to happen. RandyA
  23. Yep, I have to second that! RandyA
  24. Hey Margaret, you should be having some nice weather down that way by Sunday and later in the week. RandyA
  25. It has been determined that Punxsutawney Phil, our beloved groundhog, has been right only 39% of the time. RandyA
