need a 1st gen camshaft cap
Venturous Randy replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have some off a 1300 engine. It would be hit or miss as these things are line bored in the head with the cap torqued down and then taken apart and the cam installed. Are you missing one or did it get damaged? RandyA -
OK, somewhere between July 4th weekend when I was in Birmingham on my bike and met Don & Susan Harrell and Vogal I. RandyA

Building a 83 trailer hitch.
Venturous Randy replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Tim, I have a homemade one on my 83. If I get a chance I will take my side bags off and see if I can get you some measurments and pictures this afternoon. Mine works real good even though it is probably heavier than a manufactured one. RandyA -
Well, since next Thursday is my 40th anniversity, I would say about 03-69. RandyA

Which Brake pad to buy
Venturous Randy replied to dans87vr's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The most aggressive in slowing my 83 down was the EBC HH pads. They are also a bit more aggressive on the rotors, but worked real well when pulling my 450 lb loaded camper. RandyA -

Venturous Randy replied to Midrsv's topic in Watering Hole
If you do happen to listen to rap racket, you will notice the language it terrible. Two attractive young women pulled up beside me back in the summer playing rap and the "F" word was used several times in each sentence. I guess if you have anything drummed into your head long enough, it becomes normal, A couple of years ago we had a hearing test done at work and as I was waiting my turn, I got to talking to the audiologist about rap and he stated a good business to be in in the future will be for the hearing impaired. He stated that the most damaging sound to the ear is base, or low frequency sounds. Anybody remember many years ago when the term "deaf and dumb" was used about deaf people? Of course, now we do not associate deafness with IQ as it is not a factor. In the future are we going to again refer to deaf and dumb with self induced deafness? RandyA -
I went from an Avon on the rear to an Elite 3 and do like it. I need to replace the front Avon soon and will try to find an Elite 3 locally. RandyA

Some Issues with the bike.
Venturous Randy replied to nonextant's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
First thing, welcome home!! Next, I want to suggest that you bite the bullet and take the carbs off and do a good cleaning job. One of the big problems on these bikes, especially if they have set for a while is glogged pilot jets. It is a lot of work, but you will be happy with the results. If you have holes in the diaphrams, there is a fix that works fairly good for a while. Maybe all of us that want diaphrams can get some on this buy we are investigating. RandyA- 6 replies

odyssey pc680
Venturous Randy replied to Kurt827's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The Oddesy 680 is promoted on this site because it works great and solves some of the problems of the 1st gen. The fit is easy to fix. RandyA -
Yeah Lew, no reading glasses and dyslexia is a challenge. The parking lot suggestion is great and something else to keep in mind is upper range TIRE pressures really help these things, especially at low speeds. A low range tire pressure makes them wallow. Go for at least 40psi in the front. Also Get up to about 15mph and start doing some swinging back and forth and increase the amount of lean as you practice. RandyA

Vibration
Venturous Randy replied to mattevans's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When you had the rear tire replaced, did you have the pumpkin removed along with the driveshaft and grease all the splines? If you did not do this, you need to. It could be a transmitted engine vibration such as out of sync carbs, running on three cylinders, etc. How does the bike run? Have you checked to see if you may have a dead cylinder? You can do this by starting the bike from being cold and let it run for about 5 to 10 seconds and cut it off and feel the temps on the header pipes. Obviously, a cool one will be a dead cylinder. That makes sense. I did not realize the coasters locked. RandyA

Knees. before you tear in to anything, make sure the electrical connections are good and tight on the gas tank sending unit. I have fixed several that had intermitten readings by tightening the terminals. That may work for you. RandyA

My question is, how hard is it to get off the dolly by putting the center stand down? My bike already spins around very easy when on the center stand because I have a steel wheel on the side of the right leg foot. RandyA

Venturous Randy replied to Thom's topic in Watering Hole
Thom, when State Farm settled with me on the truck knocking my bike over and it is an 83 with 115,000 miles on it, I received $3,164 and kept the bike. I don't know if I can find the paperwork where I settled, but I will try. RandyA -
Bargin Battery
Venturous Randy replied to FROG MAN's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The biggest thing for me is not worring about hot start problems, even with #4 cables. After I put the #4 cables on, which was an improvement, I would still get in a situation where I encountered a hot start problem, even with a good battery and it always was at a very inopertune time, like a hot summer day in heavy traffic in Cherokee, NC. Not a good time to kill the engine. The Oddesy so far has done a great job of starting the bike, whether at 22º or 102º. RandyA -
Scott, we had a guy killed here Thursday in a cage because he did not see a loaded dump truck coming at him. Sometimes people just don't look. RandyA

In the next few months I will be having cataract surgery, particularly on my left eye. Due to this, bright lights at night make it very hard for me to see as good as I used to be able to. It is very irritating to meet someone with their high beams on and really does decrease my ability to see. One of my concerns is dropping off the edge of the road and then losing control and causing a crash. This has also made me realize how many other "seeing impaired" older folks there are out driving around and not realizing how bad they have gotten. About 12 years ago I installed a set of plug-in strobes inside my headlight and run them all the time, even at night. These are like the ones you see on the headlights of the NASCAR pace car. I know that they are technically illegal, but the frequency is adjustable and I have slowed them down so they do not look like an emergency vehicle. They are illegal for two reasons, on pulsating headlights, the lights are technically not supposed to completely turn off. Also, the strobes do exceed the allowed candle power allowed on a vehicle, but for only for a nano second they are on. So far I have not had anyone complain about being blinded, but have had many tell me that it made it a lot better in getting their attention. Riding around with your bright lights on at night is not in my opinion a safer thing to do. This reminds me a lot of the thread a couple of years ago about the motorcycle rider pulling a trailer on his bike and refusing to hook up the safety chains because he felt if the trailer came loose that he did not want it jerking the bike around, regardless of the safety of the other people on the road dealing with a loose trailer wondering around.
