    Laura & I took a 280 mile ride today and saw 80º. We rode an area we have never been to before and it was beautiful. We have been on a shorter ride earlier this year, but I was a little concerned because I was feeling an oscillating vibration. I synced the carbs the other day and did not feel any vibration today. The bike ran and felt great. Our 1st fill up gave us 43mpg, but we had little time over 60mph. I probably did not get that good on the way home as most of it was between 65 and 80mph. I am really liking these Elite III's The frustrating part is Tuesday we are supposed to have snow and not get out of the 30's. But, it won't be too long before it will be summer. RandyA

    If he confirmed the pins were out before he pulled the motor apart, I wonder if the pins being out allowed the gears to get together at the wrong time and break. I can not imagine that catastrophic of a gear failure not being felt. RandyA

    If you have not already, you may want to upgrade your brake pads to EBC HH. I have put a lot of miles on my 83 pulling a camper and loaded it weighs about 450 pounds. It does take a bit more room to get it stopped. RandyA

    This is probably not brake fluid level related. You may need to check the connections and clean them that go from the reservoirs. You also may need to look at the pin terminals in the CMS in the middle of you dash. I suspect if you are loosening the bleeder valve, putting a hose on it and them pulling a vacuum, you are probably pulling some air in around the threads of the valve. RandyA

    Mike, on the strip that your key fob lays in, just put a knife or screw driver under one end and it will pop off. There is a screw under it that you remove to take the cover off. RandyA

    First of all, I like the 2nd gen, but at this time in my life it is not a priority for me to have one. I also do like my 1st gen that I have put almost 100,000 miles on. Yamaha, whether not doing a good marketing job or what seems to have never got the 2nd gen on track. I may go into a Yamaha shop and see the same new Venture that has been sitting there for a long time, so the shop seems to be leary of ordering and promoting them. I also can deal with not making a m/c payment in over ten years. I feel there is a little too much of a "generic" look to the 2nd gen and I still have a hard time telling if it is a Harley or 2nd gen coming at me on the road, even as it is passing me going the other direction. In fact, I get a kick out of telling some 50 to 60 year lady that has just admired and commented on my bike that; "Why, you were just a girl when this bike was built". They seem to like that. RandyA

    One night I was coming from Asheville, NC back toward TN on the fourlane that is now I-26. I was maybe running 5 over and had a car probably 500ft or more in front of me. All of a sudden there was a Camaro coming flying up beside me and slowed down quickly to match my speed, then he goosed it several times. When I did not do anything, he accellerated and went to the next car. It ended up being a new Trans Am. All of a sudden both took off and after getting up some speed, the blue lights came out everwhere on that Camaro, as it was a NC Highway Patrolman. To this day I regret that I did not stop and get that troopers name and tell the guy in the Trans Am I would go to court with him. I am glad I used some constraint as the car I was driving was a 72 Datsum 240Z with a warmed over 350 Chevy small block that would have left that Camaro sitting. RandyA

    We are supposed to have mid to upper 60's Saturday and low 70's on Sunday with rain moving in Sunday evening here in east TN. Then it is supposed to have highs in the 40's next week. At least the weekend is supposed to be nice. RandyA

    Just heard on the news about major problems with people just abandoning boats, especially some of the bigger ones. Many people can not afford to run them or pay for keeping them in a slip. I guess it is a real buyers market in the boat business. At least for most motorcyclists, if they have a job they can ride the bike to work. RandyA

    Whether is is due to less available flex in the rubber or what, but the less thread there is, the quicker the tread wears out. RandyA

    Goose, on my 1st gen I am very happy with the new Elite 3 I put on about 600 miles ago. I had put the Elite 3 on the back last summer. I also feel an improvement in smoothness and feel the bike is more neutral. I went from Avons and have had a big problem with tail end waggle above 70 to 80 mph, as have other 1st genners. My suggestion is to bite the bullet as soon as you can and get an Elite 3 on the front. You will really enjoy the ride then. If you posted about the Elite 3 failure, I missed it. What was the deal on that? Thanks, RandyA

    If you have all the bolts around the perimeter out and the cover will move, the problem is magnatism. The magnetic effect of the stator is a bit and can be surprisingly tough to pull off. Have you already removed the middle gear cover right behind the stator cover, as you will need to take the stator wires loose from their holding point? The best way to get all that old varnish off is with varnish remover, then you can start polishing. RandyA

    It sounds to me like you are talking about the seal that goes in the engine that the pushrod goes thru, not in the slave cylinder itself. Usually it is just a matter of sticking a screw driver in the center and catching a lip and prying it out. It is not usually hard to get out, but is a bit tough to get to back in the recess. If you have it that far apart and you have messed with the seal at all, you need to replace it. I had one start leaking and wished I had fixed it when I did the 2nd gear repair. Not usually a tough job, but a bit aggrivating. RandyA

    I think you will find there are a lot of things that are legal in one state and not in another. An example is helmet laws. If you are in KY and go into VA, or from SC to NC without a helmet, you better stop and put one on. RandyA

    David, if you go through Washington, NC on thru Bath to the big lake, Swanquarter will be off to the right on the waterfront. It is a beautiful area down there and a bit desolate. RandyA

    Tim, the only problem with an oil pressure gauge is on these old Ventures, they usually don't have enough to measure until you wind them up some. It would probably worry more than you would enjoy it. RandyA
