  1. I know you can not do this on your bike, but if you had an early 1st gen, you could do a good 2nd gear wheelie and not only does it wake her up, but the severe pinching on your sides wakes you up too. RandyA
  2. On a hot summer day, I was running a little close behind a car I was going to pass and did not see the dead opposum he was straddling until it was too late. When I hit it, it literally exploded and I had it all over the bottom of the bike and my shoes and pants legs. I did not go down, but I sure had a stinking mess to clean up. RandyA
  3. I have run Valvoline 10-40 in everything I have for years. Like raceman said, I have also pulled the intake off a small block Chevy with well over 100,000 miles and it was as clean as a new engine inside. As far as this oil in my bike, I started having a little clutch slip under hard load at about 70,000 miles. My problem was weak springs. I replaced the springs and at the same time bought a set of clutches for a friends MK2. The springs stopped my slip, but after not putting the clutches in his bike, I put them in mine and with the springs and clutches and pulling a 450lb camper, I feel pretty good about it. Another concern is when I replaced the gear set with a later model, I found that the orange O-ring in the oil galley was broken and sticking out like a worm. So, after running the bike with the oil system comprimized, plus routine 8,000rpm sprints, plus pulling a heavy camper, I feel that the Valvoline 10-40 works just fine. I did try Amsoil Synthetic motorcycle oil a few years ago and the only difference I felt was the lighter wallet and oil leaks I did not have before. RandyA
  4. When helping my grandson study for his motorcycle written exam, I believe it said that in Tennessee the handlebars can not be either 15 or 18 inches above the seat. We got a guy around here that rides a Harley that his arms are straight up when riding RandyA
  5. Looks very good. I did not put the emblems back on mine and won't. It looks much better without them. The only one I have is the one in the chrome strip under the windshield. I would take that one off it I easily could. Makes people wonder what you are riding. RandyA
  6. I have written several posts and deleted them before posting. I will just say that some people do not have their priorities in the right order. And, I whole heartedly agree with autopilot's last post. There are many of us that can not stand seeing a woman treated this way. Well, I better quit or I will end up deleting this post. RandyA
  7. Are you like one of these "rent to own" places I hear advertized? RandyA
  8. When I put my 850 Yamaha up for sell many years ago, I guy came to look at it and seemed interested. I let him take it for a ride and before it was over with, I was ready to go hunting him. I heard him screaming thru the neighbor hood on the way back and when he did return, it was evident that he liked the bike but was not interested in buying any bike. Since then, my feelings have changed. Whether they come with cash in hand or not, I would be leary of letting anyone take off on my bike before they handed me the cash. And this is especially so on any type of performance bike. If nothing else, follow him on your bike or in your car. Some people look at this as an opportunity for a joy ride. RandyA
  9. One thing that can help you when you are removing a bolt that is upside down and you can not see real good what you are doing is; Put a good six point socket on the ratchet and before you even put it on the bolt, set the direction of rachet, In other words, holding the socket in your hand, turn the wrench counter clock wise and it should not rachet and when you turn it clock wise, it should rachet. This way, you know you got it right before you put it on upside down where you can not see it good. I suggest this because even though there are some real good "wrenchers" on here, I am sure that many have pulled the wrong way when doing something uoside down before they realized they were wrong. 10. I just went to ebay and this is a good price on this unit. You will also need headsets, according to whether you use open or full face helmets. The headsets are usually around $25 each and the cable around $10. 11. My 83 is a Standard and for many years my wife and have used a Chatterbox set-up. In fact, I was having a connection problem with the one I have had for years and went to my local independent motorcycle shop and bought the main box and two open face headsets for $30. I have the box mounted on my wifes helmet with velcro and a short wire that connects us that I got at Radio Shack for a few bucks. This is the older 40 series and they were notorous for eatin the little batteries so years ago I got a battery holder from Radio Shack and wired into the box and now the two AAA batteries last for a long time. If you go on ebay there are several versions of intercom systems that come up and sometimes they go pretty cheap. The wireless ones can go for $400 to $500 for a set, but with those you can talk to other bikes also. RandyA
  12. I would have said "Mine does, her name is Laura". RandyA
  13. As many do here, I carry a plug repair kit and one time I had to use it and was about 150 miles from home. I used my little Harbor Freight pump to get enough air pressure to get me to a gas station. In 98,000 miles on this bike, I have had several punctures on the rear and if the tire was relatively new, I would dismount the tire from the rim and prepare the inside of the tire and put a good heavy duty patch on it. I would always leave the plug in to keep any junk out of the hole, I just shaved it off level with the inside surface. I have never had a problem doing this, but none of the punctures had any indication of a tear, just a small hole. RandyA
  14. You guys amaze me. Some of the stuff you come up with. I wonder if the magnetic foot pads would make any difference? I suspect not as they are probably pretty weak. I do have some pretty strong magnets at home and I may have to try this. RandyA
  15. I don't usually visit other forum sites other than Maxima.org when I am looking for some specific information. It is unbeliveable in the number of "jerks", and I am being PC here, that are on that site. For many of the members, a rude response to a valid question is a routine. This place really is special. RandyA
  16. Other than a bit too much of an addiction to carbohydrates, i really don't have much of what I call an addiction, except coming to VentureRider.org. I come on several times a day at work and it is a rare evening that I don't also come on several times. It is just a way of life for me. I have had so many Laugh Out Loud moments and I have felt profound grief. I have met many that I consider a friend that I have never seen in person. I have met some in person that I wondered if they ever had a friend. I have learned a lot more about my bike due to this bunch and I try to contribute info that may be helpful to others. I have given away parts and I have had parts given to me. I have received more pleasue in helping someone in need than if I had charged them. This kind of reminds me of when our favorite State Park started to charge a parking fee. I heard some complaints, but what happened was the park became much better and safer managed. My initial thinking was maybe it will keep the riff-raff out, and guess what, it did. Don, I have had the pleasure of meeting you on several occasions (at Vogal) and you are an inspiration. RandyA
  17. Not sure what you mean. Are you refering to the lightbar or the bar that goes across the top that the bag mounts on? RandyA
  18. Here is an idea of what I have. RandyA http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32521&highlight=Trailer+hitch
  19. Not so sure about that given that 70 to 80% of the braking is from the front under heavy braking. The rear would be much more likely to lock up if they were even. RandyA
  20. If I were you I would disconnect and remove the YICS completely and get some good caps to plug everything. I doubt you would be able to tell any difference if your YICS was working perfectly. I know my bike runs a lot better after I took mine off. But, if you leave it on and it is good shape, it should not affect sync. RandyA
  21. The Elite 3 front tire I got from superstore was $102 with free shipping. That must have been a promotion as I checked again later and it was $117. That still beat my local independent dealer as his price was $137 including local taxes. RandyA
  22. He is saying there are two different rotors, not pads. RandyA
  23. Tim, you actually have about 4 bleeding places on an 83 that are associated with the rear brakes. You have the bleeder on the calipers and you also have the bleeder on the anti-dive unit on the front of the fork. The anti-dive on the 83 uses brake fluid pressure to change the valveing on the strut to keep the front from diving during brakeing. The other bleed position is up near the tripple tree where the the steering swivels, but there is not a bleeder. You would have to break the line loose near the top. Most don't do this. The later 1st gens actually have a bleeder near the top. When bleeding the brakes, make sure you do not run out of brake fluid, as the reserviors are small, and do not over fill them when you are done as it can cause your brakes to get hot and lock up. RandyA
  24. Ewwww, now I have this vision that I can not get out of my mind. I have some Jack Daniels somewhere that I may have to find to see if I can dim the vision some!!! RandyA
  25. My camper is about 450lbs loaded. My 83 has plenty of power to pull it, but I like a lot of room to slow it down. RandyA
