  1. You may be able to peck on the side of that carb with something to dislodge the float valve. You can also drain that carb and when you refill it, it may flush any debris out. It does sound like a good cleaning will help you, but you will need to make sure if you clean them, that clean gas is filling them back up. You may have some trash in your tank that is coming through. RandyA
  2. Congratulations!!!!! Of all the things I have wanted to do, it was to fly on my own. My uncle had a plane and I flew up front in the copilot seat for many trips on the company airplane, but I just never spent the money to get my license. I have always loved to fly, except commercial. RandyA
  3. Sunday I went for a ride and pulled into a store where a guy was working on a newish looking HD. I stepped up to see if he had any tools and he had some, so I asked if he was ok. He stated it would not start when he came back out of the store as it was dead. He had already been to Auto Zone and picked up a new battery. I told him if that did not fix his problem, I had an ohm/volt meter and would help him troubleshoot. I noticed a few minutes later he was buttoning it up and started it up. He made a point to come into the store to thank me for offering my help. This was probably more of a battery shorting out internally than a Harley problem, but he did appreciate me offering to help.   4. Ditto on this. I have a standard, so my "cruise" is a precisely adjusted throttle lock that will stay set, but can be moved easy enough. But, the big improvement was the throttle rocker. I have much more finite control and I now don't have the numbness and tiredness in my right hand. RandyA
  5. I have put 99,000 miles on my 83 in 13 years. For the last 12 years I have run plug-in strobes inside my headlight that bounces off the reflector. If you are standing in front of my bike, it looks like I am taking your picture. A few years later I put strobes in my tail light lense and in my trunk light bar activated by my brake light. A year or so ago I installed a small LED lightbar about four inches long under my trunk rack, also activated by my brakes. The strobes in my tail light lens no longer work and I did not fix them because about three years ago I got pulled over by a Tennessee State Trouper after he came up behind me while waiting for a red light. When we pulled out he blue lighted me. It was about 1:30 am on the way back from the Honda Hoot in Knoxville. When he came up to the bike, the first thing he said was "Sir, I am not going to write you a ticket, but it against the law to have colored strobe lights on a vehicle and someone else may". We talked about it and I also showed him my headlight strobes. I also noted they had been operating for about ten years. Since then, I did install the red LED "third" brake light and it does run back and forth when activated. The strobes in the trunk lightbar are white and the lenses are almost bleached clear. The thing that I have done is to run the strobes on a slow frequence so it is obvious they are not being used for emergency lights. The headlight strobes are switched beside the radio and can be turned off if I want. The rear strobes and LEDs are hardwired. I know that Tennessee is a lot different than a lot of other states. We do not have a private vehicle state inspection program and sometimes that is good and bad. I just renewed the tags for my El Camino today for $24 and for my bike for $17. We also do not have a state income tax program, but our sales tax is a little higher. I like the sales tax program better. For those of you like me that run lights other than what is state approved, yes there is the posibility of a LEO taking issue, but I have found that most feel what you are doing is for safety and not just showing off, like the tuner guys putting rows of colored neon lights under their cars. I personally am not a big fan of occilating head lights. I know they are very visable but I have concerns; Some people almost panic when they see a occilating headlight come up behind them. I would be afraid they may drop off the edge of the road and start a crash thinking they need to get out of the way. I am also concerned that younger drivers may think you have your signal light on. And, you can not run them at night and I run my strobes all the time. RandyA
  6. I am with Condor on this, a Mighty Vac in some cases can hurt you more than it can help you. If you are not constantly keeping the reservior with enough fluid, you may easily start pulling in air. I have also found that when getting a reservior started flowing that if I take the line loose right out of the master cylinder and use my finger as a check valve, that I can get flow started. This also works on the handle bar masters. That way you know you are getting fluid flow. These bikes can get a little hinky after being parked for a while. One spring many years ago I was ready to go for a ride and had no clutch release. I had plenty of fluid in the reservior and when I tried to bleed it I was not getting anything. I ended up taking the line loose and starting the bleed there and when I started pumping, I reconnected and bled the whole system. After bleeding, the clutch worked fine. I had a spare proportioning valve that we put on SGN's bike as his would not work correctly. RandyA
  7. What year 1st gen is it? I ask because there are also mechanical things, such as greasing the driveshaft, that is more critical on one than the other. If you are going to do it, we will help you make a list of some things that you may not think of, like Plexus for keeping you windshield clean and polished. One problem with dealing with a private seller is he may want to sell it "as is" and not want to be bothered with having to get someone to go thru everything before someone flys in and picks it up, so a lot of preventative maintenance may not be an option. Also, ask if there has been any upgrades, such as a new fuse box, as loose fuses can cause havoc. One thing to consider is it would be a great time to make some memories, but you want to make sure they are good ones. I think most people on here would love to have this opportunity. Keep us posted.   9. Last Friday I went to the funeral of a guy I had worked with for over 15 years. He, without a doubt, had the most common sense of anyone I have ever known. About seven weeks ago he started feeling funny and when tests were done, he was found to have cancer of the brain stem. They sent him to Duke Med center, but not much of anything could be done. He was 58, the same age as me. He had spent most of the last three years in China setting up and running a plant over there. I am still wondering if something he may have come in contact with over there may have brought this on. RandyA
  10. This post caught my eye and particularly the part about the gearing. Of all the comments I have ever heard about the 2nd gen, I have never heard about it being geared too low in 5th gear at any speed. What you needed to do was go from a 1st gen to a 2nd gen. Our 1st gens were designed when highway speeds were 55mph and we know low geared. In fact, like a couple of others, I would like to go to the 2nd gen gearset with a VMax rear end in my 1st gen. That would be a bit lower than what you have, but a lot better than what we 1st genners have. Even though you will see some ribbing about these bikes, mostly 1st gen/2nd gen stuff, some people can get a little sensitive if they feel their bike is being bashed. As far as ergonomics, I ride a 1st gen with a cut down Corbin. That is what has worked best for me as I can hardly straddle a watermellon and touch the ground. RandyA
  11. Thanks for all your efforts and info. I put a 680 in my 1st gen last summer and it seems to be working fine, but if I had been able to see this earlier, I would have went with the ET battery. RandyA
  12. You have me confused here. I am not aware of a "weep hole" on the anti dives. Also, what is leaking from the anti dive, brake fluid or strut fluid? If you are going to by-pass the anti dive brake hose, you do not need to block the hole to keep from leaking brake fluid from the anti dive RandyA
  13. I have pictures of me at about five years old playing with cars in front of a motel in Chimney Rock. Laura and I still love taking a ride across the mountain to go there. To be in the mountains, it can get real hot there in the summer and we have went swimming many times in the river and also in the lake in the curve. Thanks for posting the pictures, it brings back a lot of memories. RandyA

  22. Here in east Tennessee, we have a lot of rolling hills, some up to 6,600 feet and it can make for some unpredictable wind. As you move along in what would be a constant wind, the direction and intensitivity can change as the contour of the land changes. Several times on what was a nice day, I have cut a ride short due to wind. Wife's cousin dumped his Voyager after coming around a "protected" curve into the wind and he was off the road. RandyA
  23. This reminds me of being with my brother-in-law once. We were in his Ford F250 that he uses to go from point A to point B. I had him stop at a cycle shop for me to pick up something and while I ran in, there were a couple of guys on Goldwings with trailers leaving. As I was getting back in the truck, I asked where they were headed and they responded the Florida Keys on vacation. My BIL stated he could not figure why anyone would ride a motorcycle to the vacation spot. He said he guessed he could see trailering one and riding when he got there . I told him the difference was if you were riding a bike, the vacation started when you left and if you towed it, the vaction started when you got there. I really don't think he understood what I meant. RandyA

  25. Hey pegscraper, as I have mentioned before, I used to work in Ft Wayne up to the mid 90's. In my times there and riding around in the company car, I never did see much of a hill unless it was an overpass. Then again, I am from the mountains of east Tennessee and we have hills close by that go up to over 6,600 feet. If you ever get a chance to come to this area, please let me know and I will take you on some roads that will scrape your pegs plum off. Thanks for posting and I enjoyed the pictures. RandyA
