Misfiring
Venturous Randy replied to serbo's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On the side stand starting problem, make sure the spring on the clutch lever is long enough to push the clutch lever all the way out. That will complete the curcuit to not allow the bike to start with the side stand down. Do you still have the old fuse box on your bike? If you do then you need to change it to a blade type. The old type will allow the fuse to be loose causing it to blow. RandyA -
Weird Vibration

Mine was a little different than yours in that mine was more noticable under a pull. I synced the carbs and all is well. RandyA- 19 replies

brake resevoir screws
Venturous Randy replied to Scooter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Lowe's has chrome hex head at 2 for 80 cents. They stick up a little bit but work fine. They are also a lot easier to get out than the phillips head. RandyA -
Very good suggestions so far. One simple one is the last two Yamahas I have had did NOT like ANY throttle when being started, either hot or cold. When you take the airbox off and look down on the carbs, move the choke lever and make sure the enrichment levers are moving on all carbs and about the same. I think you will see what I am talking about once you get the airbox off. RandyA

Weapon for ‘Mass Distraction’ (How big is your horn!)
Venturous Randy replied to dragerman's topic in Safety and Education
I run a set of the 132db horns from Harbor Freight. They are sometimes on sale for $10 or so. The bell comes red, so I paint them Gloss black. I do not split the two horns to one compressor as I have a compressor for each side. For what these cost, they are very effective and have no doubt saved my life. RandyA -
Even though my bike sees 7,000 to 8,000rpm frequently going up thru the gears, it also does fine at 25 to 30mph in 5th gear. At 25mph in 5th on flat ground, it accelerates surprising well. Now, I would not want to do that on a 2nd gen with their more spaced gearing and 4th & 5th being overdrive. RandyA

Could be it just needs a good tune up. Plugs, caps, diaphragms, carb cleaning, sea foam, corrode connections on coils, TCI. He will just have to start somewhere and work thru it as it could be anything or several things. RandyA

Jeff, I had something similar a couple of years ago after reminents of a hurricane went thru western NC. I was going into a shaded area and the rain had caused the pavement to buckle up at least 6 to 8 inches. I hit it at about 45mph and literally went airborne. I was real glad Laura was not on the back on this trip. I had to turn around and go back and see what I had hit. There were already a lot of marks where cars and trucks had bottomed out going over it. Glad you and your bike survived it. RandyA

Please Say "It Ain't So"!?!?

Do they mount the same as the black ones? I don't take my fairing off the remove my black grills. RandyA -
Bump!!!!! Laura and I discussed during dinner about going over to KOA Sunday and seeing what we can set up for July 10/12 weekend. I would love to be able to get everyone around the pond like we did last year. We had sites from about 19 thru 25 or so. And, since these sites are so big, it would not be a problem to put a tent or two extra on each site. Last year I wanted site #22 as it had a perfect place for my little camper and was told it was reserved. No one ever did show up to take it unless they drove by and decided they did not want to be in the middle if that bunch. Anyone want to let us know how many sites we may need? My only concern is this will be the week that ties into July 4th weekend and I hope we are not too late to get what we want. RandyA

Greasing the shaft
Venturous Randy replied to MikeM8560's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The trick is to take Vise grips and put them on the bell of the big end. You just need it tight enough to be able to hold up the front end of the shaft up and it will not hurt the splines. Normally the u-joint will drop down and all you have to do is put the nose into the u-joint hole and lift the front of the shaft up until the splines are straight. Twist the drive shaft slightly until the splines line up and it will slide right in. It took me a lot longer to type this than it does to put the shaft in. Unclamp the Visegrips and make sure the spring is still in the coupler and slide the rearend in place. I have heard stories about how you are supposed to torque the four nuts in place evenly, but I have never worried about that. RandyA -
I used to work for a company that had a plant in Sneedville, TN and that is in the middle of nowhere. I would spend one day every other week there and when driving around in a cage, everybody waves at you. It might be a real nice looking woman in an old pick up truck, but she will give you a BIG wave. Anybody standing in their yard will throw up their hand at you. Now, if they did not like the way you looked at them, they may pull a gun out of their pocket, but they would wave at you. RandyA

When I tow my camper with LED lights, it does not trip any icons on my 83 dash. I did the battery resistor a while back when I did the Oddesy battery and that has worked perfect. RandyA

With all the voice recognition stuff like on cell phones, I wonder if it will become available on hearing aids where it can recognize someone's voice and automatically mute them? I can see it now, someone sees this post, develops it and makes a gazillion bucks and I am still setting here broke. RandyA

In 1987, I believe the quickest American production vehicle you could buy had a 3.8 engine in it. It was the Grand National Buick. It had quicker quarter mile times than the Corvette. The GNX version is highly sought after. RandyA

It runs in spurts. I generally always wave, even if I don't look to see that I am waved at. Sometimes I will meet several where it is obvious I am not acknowleged and I will tell myself to just quit waving and then the next several bikes will give an obvious wave. I guess the time it is irritating is when a biker pulls up beside you when stopped and will not even look over at you. Sometimes that is when I leave him by himself. RandyA

water pump tick...
Venturous Randy replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One thing you might do is with the waterpump cover off, start the engine and see if you can isolate the tick closer. RandyA -

Your garage must be about as organized as mine. RandyA -
I have had my 83 for over 13 years and have put 99,000 miles on it for a total of 122,000. I have done a lot of mods to mine and really do enjoy the bike. I started having the 2nd gear problem at about 40,000 miles and at 48,000 did the undercut on the gears and put 60,000 more miles on before I put a transmission in out of an 86 engine I had picked up. It was not jumping in 2nd gear but beginning to rattle while idling and on the side stand. If I had put the hardened thrust washer in, I probably would still be using that set up. I picked up a Corbin seat cheap that I cut down some, cut the centerstand down 1/2 inch and put a steel wheel on the outside of the right leg and routinely spin the bike around on smooth concrete with two fingers on the trunk. It has custom paint with ghost flames and I get a lot of compliments. It is neat to tell someone the bike is over 26 years old and they can not believe it. Tim made some real good points about having an "old" bike. They are not for everyone. I could not imagine having a bike like this and not being able to do my own maintenance. It breaks my heart to see someone buy one of these bikes and not only know nothing about them, but never have had any mechanical exposure on anything. When I am helping someone on their 1st gen, my motto is to "help them work on their bike". As has been expressed, these Ventures are great bikes. You would just have to figure out what fits you physically, financially, mechanically and asthetically best. RandyA

trunk reflector
Venturous Randy replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe it was bigbikes.com that used to sell the lighted reflector for about $50. I put one on a friends 89 and also put strobes in it that activated with the brakes. I just checked both bigbikes abd JC Whitney and did not see it listed. RandyA RandyA -

Jardines are sweet and I love mine, but they are getting harder and harder to find. RandyA -
A Maxima I bought had to have the clutch pedal pushed hard to the floor to start when I bought it. Rather than adjust it, I put a simple jumper wire across the two wires that went to the switch. I put about 200,000 miles on it after that and it worked fine. RandyA

Road Trip - Help me get Miss Venture home!
Venturous Randy replied to GaThumper's topic in Watering Hole
The last I heard for this weekend here in east Tennessee, you better have some good rain gear. Good luck. RandyA -
Several weeks ago I was in the left lane of a four lane that had an island in the middle. I noticed a older small pick up in front of me that caught my attention. All of a sudden he slammed on his brakes and turned partway into the opening to make a u-turn. I had time to slow down or even come to a stop, but an SUV coming up behind me did not. I was able to quickly cut around the guy, almost into the other lane and I believe the SUV may have hit him. I was paying so much attention to getting away from them that I did not see what happened, but over the hill is a redlight and none of that traffic caught up with me when I stopped. I hate to pick on SUV's but I routinely see those drivers doing the stupidest things and it is like the road belongs to them. It's like "Get out of my way!!!" RandyA
