As for your trip down now, make a detour over into Cherokee, NC and pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway and you can ride it all the way up into nothern VA, along with the Shanandoa Drive. RandyA

  7. First of all, thanks Dan for your addition to this thread and glad you are up and thinking, as compared to the alternative. In the case of lubing the tach moving points, you will want to use a light lubricant on that as it is not a rotating contact point, like the speedo bearing and you can still use this fixture I made with the dash and speedo out. I may have missed in your post about the crash, but what vehicle were you in? RandyA
  8. Well, it looks like in this endeavor of eating the elephant, you are down to the part near the tail. I believe the best thing to do is bite the bullet and pull the carbs back off and go thru them real good, from the needle valves to cleaning and inspection of each jet, particularily the pilot jets. I am not sure what you have done in cleaning these carbs, but I have had people tell me they cleaned out their carbs and what they did was take the bowls off and wipe them out and blow air thru any exposed jets and that was it. Obviously, if you are not getting fuel into a carb, you need to backtrack all the way to the tank. Does the filter have rust in it? Do the fuel lines to the carb look like they are breaking down and getting rubber into the needle valve? I also agree with the carb sync issue. A badly out of sync set of carbs can run very bad, especially at low rpm's. You will also want to put a fresh set of plugs in and make sure your caps do not have corroded resistors in them. Don't let this get you down. You have already done the hard part, now you are just working out the minor tuning issues. Good luck and keep us posted, RandyA
  9. Steve, it does sound like you have found your problem. Just remember, Liquid Wrench is not a lubricant as much as it is a cleaner. Your speedo is a definate candidate for pumping grease into. RandyA
  10. Another thing I forgot to mention is before I screwed the cap on, I took a small wire brush about the size of a tooth brush and went around the outside of the lip. This opened that area up a little more and kept from pushing in the dried grease. When doing this, don't be afraid of putting some firm pressure on the grease gun. You will be pushing grease into a pretty restrictived hole. It also helps to have a good fitting on your grease gun where the harder you pump, the better it seals on the grease nipple. I just made a correction in my original post as that was a 1/4 inch, not an 1/8th inch pipe cap. RandyA

  13. I am trying to be nice here, but I am one of those people that does not believe in accidents. To imply someone had a crash due to them not being diligent enough to observe what is going on around them is not an accident, no matter how much they did not mean to do it. If a cop does a u-turn into a motorcycle and said sorry, I was obeying state laws and the laws of physics do not apply to me, something is really wrong. I am not trying to bash LEO's, but I have seen many cases of "target fascination" where all their focus is on the person they are going after, and they rely on their lights and sirens to take care of getting everyone out of the way, whether these people are able to or not. We had a case locally a couple of years ago where an ambulance went thru a red light with lights and sirens on and t-boned a car in the intersection. The driver of the ambulance was convicted of manslaughter due to the crash. RandyA

  16. I have also heard of the tube that goes across the front of the motor getting clogged up. If I were you, the next thing I would do is turn the bypass valve to the on position and see if it makes a difference. It may help you isolate the blockage if there is any. RandyA
  17. On the bright side, your bike is really going to run good when you get these bugs worked out. When I got my 83 over 13 years ago, it had a lot of Markland upgrades, but the bike itself had not been molested. I did work on a friends 89 that when I pulled the top cover off, there must have been about 150 feet of extra wiring stuffed around the battery. It looked like spaghetti, if you know what I mean.   18. I have greased several of these speedo's and have never had one that was stiff internally, but the bearing was rough and greasing seemed to solve it. Can you tell what part of the speedo is stiff? Does the needle assembly move easy? If you have some old grease that is dried, it might help to spray some brake cleaner around the bearing area before pumping in new grease. RandyA RandyA
  19. Unless the battery was fairly new, I suspect that a complete drawdown on the battery may have ruined it. Also, a trickle charger will not charge up a dead battery. As far as starting, since he did not have any experience starting this bike, he may have flooded it. Once flooded, he may have to replace the spark plugs. The first thing he needs to do is make sure the plugs are getting fire. RandyA

  22. I have used the el cheapo Autolites from Advance Auto for years and they seem to do real good. Yes Jason, I would suspect you had a bad plug. RandyA
  23. As one who many years ago had the speedometer squeal about scare me to death and then not do it again until I was 400 miles from home, I think I have a good fix. First of all, the only way to do it right is get grease INTO the bearing area where the cable goes into the housing. In the past, I would take the speedometer out of the dash and try to get grease way down in the inside and hope enough grease got around the bearing, and it usually did, but not always and it was a bit of a PITA. I went to Lowe's and got an 1/4 inch pipe cap, which screws several threads on to the back of the speedometer. I drilled and tapped a hole to accept a grease fitting. I screw the cap on finger tight, as this is a pipe thread fitting, and pump in grease. You will need to get most of the grease out of the cable hole so the cable will go in. What you are trying to do is get grease around the center piece where the cable goes. The cable hole is a blind hole(not a thru hole) so the pressurized grease goes between the center piece and housing. I did it on an old speedometer I had and it made it smoother. By doing it this way, you do not have to take the dash out, just take the cable housing off and screw on the fitting. I bought a tray of grease fittings from Harbor Freight a while back and it has different angle fittings if the straight one does not work best. I will attach some pics. RandyA
