  1. I just had a conversation with the rep from the local Bank of America. She said if you do not want to chance getting a $75 or $100 transaction hold put on your checking account (debit), as some gas stations do, use your debit card as a credit card. Evidently you may still get the $1 hold until it clears, but not the big one. The point is if a credit card is maxed out or behind on a payment, it is rejected, so if a debit card is used and works, it automatically assumes the money is there. Now, do I put any faith in a bank rep? No, but it does make sence to me. RandyA
  2. As I noted, my bike did not want to run good on two washers. Three did fine and changed the needle location about .030, which made a difference. RandyA
  3. This is interesting as I carry both and seldom use my credit card. Most of the stations I use locally always ask if it is debit or credit and if you say debit, you have to key in the four digit pin #. But it still comes out of the debit account either way you run it. I have friends that for years put everything on a credit card, even a $4 meal at McDonalds, but they pay everything off on the date the bill comes. There is probably more safety in using a credit card, especially like ebay purchases, just keep the balance paid off. RandyA
  4. I just confirmed this with the station that did the $75 hold and he also stated if you run it thru as a credit using your debit card that there is not a hold charge. Thanks for the input guys. RandyA
  5. Our Engineering Lab Manager just sent the guys in the lab an e-mail where he had filled up with gas and used his debit card. When he checked his bank account balance the next morning, he had a $75 hold for that purchase. He called his bank and they told him that alot of gas stations are now doing this for purchases at the pump. One of the guys in the lab asked his wife that works at a bank and she said she is seeing a $100 hold for each purchase from the pump at some gas stations. The last time I was on a big group ride with about 30 bikes and we stopped for gas, everyone did the "pay-at-pump" thing. If you were on a ride that had several fillups, you better make sure you have plenty of money in your checking account if you are going to pay at the pump. Otherwise those $10 purchases could end up being a lot more if the bank tags you for insuffient funds in your account because hundreds of dollars are on hold. I called our local tv news program and they were not aware of this, but were very interested in what I had to say. Also, the banks are not interesting in doing anything about this as they are making easy money from insuffient fund charges on each transaction involved. It also appears that purchases paid for inside are charged only for the amount of the purchase. RandyA
  6. Yep, that is new to me too. Never heard that one before. RandyA
  7. Dave, I was just about to do a post on my adventure during a lunch ride today. As I was coming back to work, I go under a bridge that is Interstate 26. There is a light on the other side where the exit ramp comes to the street I was on. I had the green light and this guy comes down the ramp and makes a turn on red with out even looking. I hit my brakes and the airhorns and did not let off them. It startled him so bad that he ran up on the sidewalk and stopped. I went by him and he followed me at about 5mph under the speed limit, but would not pass on the two lane one way street. When I had gone about 10 blocks and put my signal light on to turn right, he slowly passed me and cautiously waved at me. I do believe I got his attention and hope he thinks about me when he gets his front end realigned where he ran up on the curb. RandyA
  8. Sounds good to us mini. Laura is thinking about making a pot of nacho meat sauce for one meal with chips, cheese, salsa, lettuce and tomato's. We can also do a hot dog grilling for a meal like we did last year. Would you like to do the pancake fixing for breakfast? There is a Denny's in Black Mountain also if anyone wants to do that on any morning. There is also a place called My Father's Pizza in Black Mountain that we like. We will be bringing our canopy again so we can set up some meals under it with some extra chairs. When are you planning on being there? We are planning to come down on Wednesday morning before noon. We need to start thinking about what we want to do. We only have about two weeks to get it rolling. Thanks for posting this as Laura and I were talking about Asheville this afternoon. RandyA
  9. Hey Andrew, just curious, did you take the switch apart? RandyA
  10. Let me throw you another ringer in here. I thought I had a kill switch problem that actually turned out to be a side stand switch problem. When I was having a problem with it running bad and not starting good, I would flip the hill switch on and off several times and it would start. But, when I checked resistance through the kill switch, it was fine. I found the resistance was in the side stand switch and when I was flipping the kill switch, I was evidently shocking the resistance through the side stand switch and it would start. It is easy to check the side stand switch resistance, just remove the left side panel and trace the wire from the switch to the connection. On any combination of the three wires with the side stand up or down, there should be no resistance or a complete open, nothing in between. It only takes a minute and is well worth the effort. RandyA
  11. Actually Jeremy, I wondered the same thing, but as you can see from my update post, I am real happy with the change I made. RandyA
  12. It also helps if you liked playing with a Jack-in-the-Box as a kid. RandyA
  13. No, I did not. I put new plugs in it only a couple of weeks ago and the old ones looked a bit sooty. I will give these some miles and see how they look. I bet you that you can bump up to at least 43 and the bike run better. Mine does require a little choke now that it was not require earlier since the weather is warmer. I tried first with only two washers and the bike did not like that at all. RandyA
  14. I have run the Silverstars in my bike, and our Caravan and Maximas and even though the lights were brighter, the lifespan of any of the bulbs was poor. I ended up going back to stock on the cars, but I now have a PIAA bulb in my 83 bike after I upgraded to the 86-up headlight assembly. RandyA
  15. Nope, sounds like the perfect reason to go to the Elite 3 for the 1st gen. Of the Metzlers, Elite 2's and Avons I have run, I feel the most stable I have had yet is the Elite 3's. Not as nimble as the Avons but a lot more stable. Your wear pattern was typical for me on the Metzlers. RandyA
  16. And, make sure you fix the leak!! RandyA
  17. Can you put your shoes on by yourself? If you can, you got it made. RandyA
  18. Sounds alot like being married, sometimes you are the hero and sometimes you are the zero and in both cases you may not have the foggest idea what you did. Since you did go thru some connections, you may have corrected the problem, but I would make sure I had a volt/ohm meter on the bike since flowers don't help it any. RandyA
  19. As long as they're the same ratio as what? It will be about 10% lower than the rear end in your Venture. Are you saying the same ratio as the FJR1300? RandyA
  20. Condor, your thinking backwards again. By putting in a thinner washer, you are extending the needle out more with it sticking into the jet more. The washer goes under the clip and spring. I bought three bags of washers at Lowe's for $.80 cents each and I bet I paid for them yesterday with the savings in ga$. Plus, the bike ran better for me. RandyA
  21. Just take the dash out and remove the speedometer and look inside and see what is not working. It is pretty easy to pull the dash out and look at it. I would go thru the steps but it has been noted several times on how to take the speedometer out. You may just need to do a search. RandyA
  22. Like several on here lately, I replaced my diaphragms and even though the bike ran stronger under wide open throttle, my low rpm torque seemed to go down some and my gas mileage seemed to drop a little also. I was getting around 38 to 41 with the old diaphragms and the next two fillups after the new diaphragms were about 37-38 and that was 1-up. Yesterday I replaced the .123 thick washer on the needle with three #4 washers that came to about .093 and made a 250 mile ride today, 2-up. Before at about 140-150 miles, the red light was blinking on fuel. Today at 150 miles I still had two bars left. I should have filled up at that point, but I then did a twelve mile pull up the mountain from Morganton, NC to the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped and filled it up. At the top of the mountain I had 162 miles on it and had just dropped to one bar. When I filled up and put all I could get in it, it only took 3.6 gallons, so that works out to 45 miles per gallon. And, not only did my MPG's go up over ten percent, but now I feel I have the low rpm torque back. So, if you have not considered making the change on the needle valve adjustment, I am strongly suggesting that you do it. It only took me a few minutes to do it, but I don't run the lower fairings anymore and all I had to take off is my bikini side panels. Even taking all the lower fairings off, it is not a big deal and well worth the effort. RandyA
  23. Yep Thom, I know what it is like trying to do a rebirth after getting backed over. I still need to get my paint work done. Your bike is looking real good and are you going to be able to come to Vogal? RandyA
