I wondered about that also. I bet, as a general rule, these guys are not much in to mods and changing things as some of us are. I know that if my 1st gen was parked with a big bunch of other MK1's, I would not have a problem picking it out. Either it is because I am unique or odd. RandyA

Defective Radiator Cap????
Venturous Randy replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pressure causes the boiling point to increase. If you do not have adaquate contained pressure, you may be more susceptible to boil. I would replace the cap and see what it does, or at least check the tabs and seal and make sure they are ok. RandyA -
After market TCI ?
Venturous Randy replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had enough resistance in the side stand switch that it was causing the side stand relay to be intermittent, causing the bike to stop running and have poor starting or if the resistance would drop and the side stand relay would work properly, the bike would run ok. What I am trying to stress here is before someone automatically assumes the TCI is bad, check for resistance in the side stand switch to make sure the side stand relay is working as it should, therefore providing correct output to the TCI. This should also apply to resistance in the kill switch. If there is no resistance in the side stand switch, that area for a problem can be eliminated. It may not be directly connected to the TCI, but it is directly connected to the side stand switch relay, which alway has to work correctly for the TCI to work. RandyA- 33 replies

Yesterday while coming home from work there were two city cop cars with lights on with a BMW pulled over. About 9 oclock this evening I rode out and there was another BMW pulled over by a city cop. I would expect this at "The Dragon", but around here with BMW's? This surprises me. RandyA

After market TCI ?
Venturous Randy replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I want to again note that if your are having poor running, starting and other issues on your bike, check the resistance readings thru your side stand switch. I was ready to start looking for another TCI after I removed the connectors and cleaned and tightened them good. I eventually found my side stand switch had high resistance readings and needed cleaning. I took it loose and sprayed contact cleaner in it several times and quickly operated the plunger and my resistance went to Zero and now my bike is running the best it has in a looooong time. Not to hijack your thread, but I hope others will do more research before hunting for another TCI and I do hope another source becomes available for us. RandyA- 33 replies

I am suprised you have not had a comments back yet. There have been a lot more than a couple have problems with Metzlers coming apart and they have not had any good response from Metzler reps. I ran one set of Metzler 880's on my 1st gen and did not have problems, but they got as noisy as a tractor tire with some miles on them. RandyA

Wow, I believe a person would just about have as good or better chance on a motorcycle. At least the momentum would most likely take you over the car. RandyA

Muffinman is in the house............
Venturous Randy replied to DragonRider's topic in Watering Hole
OK, I am going to start this now. Next year, I want to look at scheduling Asheville for right after the Muffinman gets home and is able to come. We had a "Going Away" for him this year and I want to have a "Welcome Home" next year. When we get closer to knowing when he will be home, we will set the date. Next year, I hope we can fill the whole area around the lilly pond and have the biggest and funnest Asheville ever!!! Laura & I had a lot fun with Mini and Muffinman this year at Asheville and we will miss them and hope we can at least see Mini some. One thing I did get to do this year was a little "green light to about 90mph run" with him and that was interesting. RandyA -

And you are checking the oil level with the bike on the center stand? RandyA -
We are having a BMW rally out at the fairgrounds and they expect about 10,000 BMW's to be there. I rode to the fairgrounds this evening and it was like going back to the nest with a whole bunch of bees. They have huge tents set up for vendors(I guess) and for some of the campers, they have identical blue and white two man size tents set up in long rows, in perfect alignment and touching each other. I wish I had taken my camera with me, it just looked so different than what we had at Asheville. I hope they have a good safe time here and I am sure they will be bringing major bucks to this area. We are expecting thunderstorms to be moving through the area for the next several days. RandyA

Brad, I would love for you to find something in east Tennessee for you and Lonna. You would love it down here and your personality would fit right in. I will do some searches and let you know if I find anything. I wish you all the best of luck in dealing with this and if ever there was anyone that deserves good karma, it is you and Lonna. RandyA I just went to this site on Tricities.com and checked jobs and noted welder and it said there were 610 jobs available matching my search in this area. I did not fill in the blanks, so I have no idea what it will show. www.workjobs.net

Maybe the fender is off centered. I think most of these bikes are like that, I know my 83 is. RandyA

Did not take Freebird long to figure that one out. RandyA

I have been on blueridgeparkway.gov and it appears that the closure from Asheville up to Mt Mitchell is now open. They are in the process of paving most of that area, which was the worst condition of any part of the parkway, but traffic is moving with some occasional waits. There is also an 11 mile detour near Boone for a landslide that is closed, but detour signs can keep you on track. RandyA

Great pics David. It was great having you and Laura there(can you imagine having two Laura's camping next to each other?) RandyA

While we were in Asheville across the mountain, we had three crashes that killed four on motorcycles and it appears all may have been the fault of the motorcyclists. There was a 13 year old with a 12 year old on the back of a trail bike came across the road in front of a Jeep, killing the two kids. There was a 40 year old that lost control and in another crash, a 22 year old on a sport bike that was speeding hit a guard rail. That is the basic info given at the moment. My first thought when the first anouncement was made before details was the people from our group going north. Then with the BMW rally here with an estimated 10,000 bikes, I thought about them. When the news guy finally came back and told what he did, I realized it was local people. RandyA

Actually, out in the sun there is a touch of orange in it. I think he really wanted to paint it Tennessee Vols orange, but I think he will do that to his 86!!

Hey you goofball, your bike really looks great with the new paint job. Yes, it is only 24 miles for him. RandyA

Rear end noise
Venturous Randy replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Given the rear wheel always turns part of the gear set, even in neutral, on mine I doubt I could get it to make one revolution as hard as I could spin it by hand. This is the way it has been for the 100,000 miles I have had it. RandyA -
Even though the Asheville Rally is a lot more laid back than the Vogal event, it still takes a bit of work and coordination and $ to put it all together. When I posted the original question 12/7/08 about doing another get together in Asheville, which I suggested as an extended Meet & Eat, we did throw out some dates to see what people would be interested in, and got good feedback. In fact, my original suggestion of what would have been next week, was given up for this week because that is when others wanted it. And, the biggie for us was that we were able to have Mini and Muffinman before he left for the sand box. So, now that you are going to skip next year for Vogal, how about we officially look at doing another Asheville sometime next summer? It really is a motorcyclist paradise and the different roads and ride possibilities are endless. For those interesting in camping, the area by the lilly pond basically ends up being us and has a tremendous amount of room for many tents. RandyA

Had a nice ride home across the mountains, took a little over an hour. Laura just yelled down at me to come help unload everything. What an absolutely super bunch of folks. This was another great get together in Asheville and it seemed everyone had a great time. We had great food, a little rain, great rides with LOTS of twisties, a little rain, great visiting around the campsite, a little rain and more good food and the loudest frogs in the lilly pond I have ever heard. I was not sure at first how many were going to be able to show up, but we had a bunch of people and bikes there. I will check back later and hope I can get the pictures out of the camera. Thanks everyone for helping Laura and me have such a great time!!! RandyA

what a surprise after work
Venturous Randy replied to EddyG's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have made comments on this several times to try to get folks to check the condition of their side stand bolt. It is an easy thing to check and can save a bunch of grief. RandyA
