  1. Great answer Squeeze. In laymens terms on cams, the difference is lift and duration. Two cams can have the same lift, but when you start lifting the valve earlier and holding it open longer, as in duration, that makes a big difference in power and streetability. Extended duration is where you get much of the lope on high performance cams. Too much duration and bottom end torque will suffer and can make a vehicle almost unstreetable. RandyA
  2. Wow, I envy you folks. Are you going to post more pics, those were great!! RandyA
  3. With the bike at idle, spray some starter fluid up under the carbs around the runners into the heads. It sounds like you may have a vaccum leak to me, even though the carbs synced. RandyA
  4. After Yammer Dan had his 1st crash and found out the guy had minimum insurance, I went back to my insurer, Allstate, and upped my coverage just to have a little more for those "under insured" guys. I hope I never need it, but if I do, it's there. If you guys are running on minimum insurance, it can bite you. RandyA
  5. For east Tennessee, this may be close to one of the coolest July's on record. Even though we are not a lot ahead on rain, we are not behind like last year. For the time being, we are pretty much out of the drought situation. And, we have some rain predicted for the next ten days. RandyA
  6. From my 1st try, .070 would have been too little on my bike. I believe I ended up with about .093 to make my bike happy. Thanks for the note and look forward to the update. RandyA
  7. As the beer comercial said, "It don't get any better than that". RandyA
  8. Be cool man!!! Actually, just try not to roast. Glad you are safely and keeping you in our prayers. RandyA
  9. I think my 2nd gear problem started in the 40's, but I tend to do a bit of WOT thru the gears a lot. RandyA
  10. It was rare that I got 40mpg. After the three washer change, The last three tanks have been 45, 48 and 45mpg. The 48 was 1-up and running from 40 to 55, thru the mountains last weekend. I put new plugs in about 1,000 miles ago and have not looked to see what they look like. The bike is running strong, it is running smooth and I have not noticed the fuel smell when it is idleing, like I did before. With today's gasoline, I doubt the plugs will give as good a reading as they did years ago, unless you are running very rich. RandyA
  11. 16 miles north of Mt Mitchell on the Parkway, you will cross highway 80. From the BRP down to West Marion, going east, that's the Rooster's Tail. Or maybe that should be "Rooster's Tale". RandyA
  12. The Rooster Tail is a great ride. You just have to watch out for poison ivy on your shoulders when you go around the curves to the right. It is much more curvy than The Dragon and the speed limit is either 45 or 55mph. I have made some hard runs up the mountain, but the last few times have been with folks that needed to go slow. RandyA
  13. I am really looking forward to the next Asheville Rally when you get back. We gonna have a good one. I wish you the best of luck Jeff and you and Mini will be in our prayers. RandyA
  14. Are you going to be camping? If you are I have a good suggestion. The BRP really is an exceptional place. I hope you have the time to meander along and enjoy some of the side roads and overlooks. There are many things to see and enjoy. RandyA
  15. After ordering Rider about 2 months ago, I finally got my first copy yesterday and it was August. I understand this is Sept copy and maybe I will get it in a couple of days. RandyA
  16. Just so you know Thom, your coffee pot was used and your name came up several times. We missed you. RandyA
  17. I think of the BRP as my "Magic carpet ride". I feel very fortunate to just be a hour away from it. RandyA
  18. Several years ago I picked up a Corbin seat off ebay that needed a little work. I took the cover off and scooped out about 1 1/2 inches of foam on the driver seat and it not only lowered it, but it made it real comfortable for me. You could probably do that to the stock seat also. It is not a big deal to take the cover off, just a bit of work. And, welcome aboard!!! RandyA
  19. It is my understanding that NC, just like TN, now allows motorcycles to go thru a red light under proper conditions. RandyA
  20. If you take the lever off and push on the piston, does it come back all the way? I have seen them get a lot of slop in them from not being lubed and maybe binding in the bushing, but have not had a problem with the piston not returning. RandyA
  21. So we are saying the two washers and wavey washer are there for the anti-dives? I just replaced my fork seals and now am bottoming out bad, like my anti-dives are not working at all. I put it back together like it was before and it was not bottoming out before. My 83 has the brake activated anti-dives. And, no, I have not put progressive springs in it yet. RandyA
  22. Hilton Head SC is not a biker friendly place. There are restaurants there you can not get to if you are on a bike. If you have never been on the BRP, there are many campsites along the way. My favorite is Carolina Hemlocks Park between Mt Mitchell and Burnsville, NC on HW 80. This is especially if you like to swim and snorkle in cool clear water. It is about five miles off the Parkway. RandyA
  23. Even with the latch undone, there should have been some resistance in pulling it off. You may need to tighten the terminals some to slide back on the spades. That is where the contact will make or break it. RandyA
  24. My 1st suggestion would be to check the carb sync. My 2nd is to get a throttle rocker where most of the time you are using the palm of your hand. My 3rd would be to think about how tight you are holding on to the grips. My 4th would be to think about what kind of grips you have. Mine are the foam type and work good. RandyA
  25. I have also found the copper wires at an auto store that sold spark plug wires for farm tractors. RandyA
