An 850 Triple Special was what got me back into riding. I found one in very good condition that needed a clutch cable and starter clutch. It had the Yamaha hard bags and fairing. The bike was surprisingly strong. The only problem I had with the bike was it was very tall for me. I was on that bike when I saw my first Venture in the fall of 95. I sold the 850 for twice what I paid for it. RandyA

Just out of curosity, is that engine a 3.0 or 3.3? Before I would spend that much, I would look around for another engine/trans package with a lot less mileage on it. I would also try to keep the old stuff for extra sensors and stuff. I have never heard of that rebuilder. RandyA

Our prayers will be with you and Susan. Hope you have a good and fast recovery. You are part of this family, which you were the one that introduced me to it, and we all care. Is the avatar picture the one I took of you at Chiminey Rock? RandyA

computer reset weirdness
Venturous Randy replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Jim, there are several posts on CMS repair. That's the readout unit you are refering to. Not a major job. Another suggestion is to check associated grounds as it sounds like a ground problem to me. RandyA -

Even though rain was predicted, I woke up to beautiful sunshine. Made a 140 mile loop through the country on some roads I have never been on before through east TN and western NC. It was like riding through a moving postcard. There were several times I wish I had brought the camera along. RandyA

Lew, we are on the same rain track you are, but even though we had rain predicted for all day, I woke to beautiful sunshine. I took a ride alone down through the country on roads I have never been on before and it was like riding through a moving postcard. I ended up making a 140 mile loop and as I neared home, the gray clouds started moving in, but never got rained on. For us to have had drought last year, and you were worse than here in east Tennessee, we are now above average in rainfall. July was the 4th wettest one on record and I don't know how August was, but it was wet. It looks like September is going to follow the same as we have rain predicted for the next week. I know one thing, we have had a cool summer and if this is any indication of what winter is going to be like, it might be a good time to hunt a snowmobile, at least up here in the mountains. RandyA

I joined before the 1st Vogal and have not had a life since. Now, all I want to do is ride my bike and see what is going on at this site. RandyA

Wow, that's bad. I personally find riding near many SUV's more scary than a bunch of bikers. RandyA

Meet my bike
Venturous Randy replied to TIMEtoRIDE's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Two suggestions: When using the liquid tape, make sure the area you are fixing is very clean. Use alcohol and Q-tips or alcohol swabs. When changing the plugs, spend a little more money and get new spark plug caps. There is a resistor inside that will corrode. Good luck and keep us posted. RandyA -
Handling problem
Venturous Randy replied to VENTUREMAX's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not sure on the MK II's, but it is my thinking that about 14psi in the front shocks is the max on an MK I. RandyA- 26 replies

Rear caliper seal question
Venturous Randy replied to Yamaha4ever's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No, the 83 does not have the frame neck bleeder. One of the functions of the seal is to slightly distort with the piston moving forward and the seal pulls the piston back slightly when the pressure is reduced. Putting silicone on the seal may have hurt that. In bleeding the brakes, I have found that since I have not bought speed bleeders, that I just loosen the bleed valve on the front caliper and have someone pump the brake lever as I use my finger as a check valve. This allows a lot of fluid movement and helps push the air to the caliper. Just keep the reservior full. When I believe there is no air in that system, I will go to the back and do the same thing. Then I will go back to the front and use the pump up, release pressure with the valve method a couple of times. I then do the same thing on the rear. As far as rear reservior fluid level, it is important not to have it too full. What I have been doing is when bleeding the rear that last time, I will turn the ignition on and bleed it down until the low level icon comes on and then add a little to make it go off. This keeps me from having too much fluid and shows me the low level warning works. RandyA -
Well, with leaving Tennessee, everywhere from there is going to be downhill. One of these days I am going to make a WV tour myself. RandyA

I have twice encountered Venture riders lately and neither were very friendly. I met two guys from IL at a local McDonalds and one was on an MK II and the other I believe a KAW 1400. I swung around and stopped and introduced my self and asked if the guy was on VentureRider.org and was told no. I suggested he check it out as there was some great info on it. He said he has had five 1st gens and he knew everything there was to know about them. I suggested that if came on the forum, he could share some of his knowledge with the rest of us, but I doubt he will. The guy on the KAW noted he had recently bought an 84 Venture and he was having problems with the brakes locking up after riding for a short time. I gave him some suggestions and our website, but I have not seen any posts that sound like him. I also encountered a couple on a white 2nd gen last weekend down in SC. I came up beside him and asked if he was on VR.org and he said no and turned his head like he was not interested in talking, so I gave up. So evidently I am stalking and scareing the hell out of them, as Squidley stated. RandyA

Laura made a beef pot roast in the slow cooker yesterday and I made cornbread patties when I got home. I make good cornbread from scratch. Laura makes it from the little pouches. I also make muffins and pan and sometimes add corn. There have been a couple of good cornbread salad recipies floating around lately. Have you had cornbread salad? RandyA

I worked on a friend's 89 and found a dead cylinder was a corroded resister in the spark plug cap. If your caps have not been changed, it does not cost that much and would be a good place to start. Randya

I did not realize when I painted mine that I had so many seperate pieces, plus two extra side panels, until I had it all laid out. Lew, it is looking good. I am sure you will have a nice 1st gen to really be proud of. RandyA

At the 1st Vogal, when I met these guys for the 1st time, we had a discussion and someone suggested "Purple Haze", but even though it fit, I never got into it. When I did a repaint a couple of years ago, I noticed that one of the names for the same color was "Twilight Royal Plum", so I am thinking more along the lines of "Plum Crazy" or "Plum Wild" and it would really fit either one. Good question Kevin. RandyA

I can understand what you have been through. But, keep in mind, this is just one of the things you pay your insurance for. I know you felt is was not fair to your insurance, but they have much more means to recoup the money. They do this kind of stuff all the time. RandyA

MK 1 vs. MK 2
Venturous Randy replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I suspect electrical anti dives work better as far as brake action, but I hear they take a lot of power when you are usually idleing. MK I calipers are different from MK II's. Randya- 7 replies

That is a shame, but as you know, it could have been SO MUCH worse. Just out of curosity, how did the guy in his state steal a car? Did someone at the hospital leave the key in it? There may be some liability on their part. RandyA

After doing the needle adjustment on my 1st gen, I am seeing at least a 10 to 15%improvement or more. I am also paying more attention to it and I am routinely getting 42/45 with as good as 48mpg. It really does make a big difference, as expected, on how I ride. I am getting about as good 2up as 1up because I tend to crank it on a bit harder when alone, especially with as good as it has been running lately. I have not made any long 70+ interstate trips in a while, but even though I am probably better than before, it does drop when I run at that speed and above for long periods. I am still wondering if there would be any improvement in that range if I replaced my trans with a 2nd gen trans and installed a V-Max rear. I know that it would drop my rpm's in 5th, but that may not help as I would still be pushing the same air. But, I hate seeing that 4,000 rpm,s at a little above 70mph. RandyA
