  1. I have absolutely no doubt I would not be sitting here if it had not been for my air horns. I encountered several that were absolutely committed in pulling into me and my air horns saved me. One thing to consider about air horns is that the big name horns are nice, but for years I have had horns I got at harbor freight for about $10 a set. Given I have bought several sets over the years, I now have a compressor for each horn, rather than splittlng them up. I used to get the chrome horns, but now I just get the red ones and pull the horn part out and paint them gloss black. They fit real nice under the fairing on a 1st gen. If you care about yourself, your rider and your bike, you had better do EVERYTHING you can do to help protect yourself. RandyA
  2. I don't have a problem with the side stand, but I did take 1/2 inch out of my center stand and it makes it alot easier to get it up on it. RandyA
  3. Never heard if it. RandyA
  4. Actually, I hope he does see his shadow. And, why do you think I would say that? According to the research, he is wrong 60% of the time, So, if he sees his shadow, then statistically we have a better chance at winter being over sooner. Either way, I can not remember a winter in my lifetime I want over more than this one, and for all the other stuff I am dealing with. He sure would not see his shadow around here, we have freezing rain. But, "This too shall pass" RandyA
  5. Ditto for me too. RandyA
  6. We have had the lime beer for a while now. randyA
  7. No, it is not normal. Given you should have reduced the thickness from about .120 to about .070 using only two washers, you should have even more play in the needle spring movement. I also suspect if the #4 washers you are using are about .032 in thickness, you will probably need one more washer for the bike to run right. Can you measure the washer thickness? And, you did use flat washers? RandyA
  8. Was this just a one man shop? Give us more detail about the shop. And, I would not touch anything more before I got a good clear understanding of what is going on. RandyA
  9. Thanks for such a great update. Summer is going to be great for you two. RandyA
  10. I am about an hour from Little Switzerland and feel blessed to call this area home. RandyA
  11. One oddity that has popped up for me is only on VR.org do I have to click the back arrow twice to get it to do anything. Anywhere else and one click does it. Not a big deal at all, but was curious as to why here. And, I am getting used to clicking twice and not just sitting here and waiting for it to do something, duh. RandyA
  12. So, Dan you are saying that WV needs a good ironing, eh? Even though Tennessee is considered to be in the south, from my house to Memphis, I am actually closer to Canada. RandyA
  13. I am not talking about the center strip of the lens horizontally, but vertically. The top center of the lens is in good focus for distance, but anything slightly off center when moving my eyes to the right or left goes out of focus very quickly. RandyA
  14. Barend, to add a little Dano's comments, cleaning out the carbon dust is a big help and particularly checking the bearings. On two starters I have had apart, both bearings in the bottom were a very dry. I did not see any damage, but putting in some good lube was a good thing. Probably one of the best things I did on a battery and I have had my 83 almost 14 years and have put an additional 108,000 miles on it, is to goet to the Oddesy battery. I have also heard there may be a better option in the Deka, but I already had the Oddesy and it is working great, hot or cold. In fact, the other day when it was about 22º and had not been above freezing for about ten days, it started very good. A lot of it has to do with starting technique and bikes do differ. When starting mine after it has sat a little while, I will turn the ignition on and flip the kill switch about a half dozen times. This activates the fuel pump, and you will hear the clicks. Some people use the ignition switch to do this, but I feel using the kill switch may keep the contacts clean, and this is the only time I use the kill switch. I will pull the choke lever, which is actually enriching valves, about 3/4. I DO NOT move the throttle. My bike does not like the throttle touched when starting, whether hot or cold. As the other day when it was so cold, it cranked over very good for a second or so and fired up, ran a couple of seconds and died. I again hit the starter and it fired and ran surprisingly well. I reduced the choke some to bring the idle down and after about 30 seconds or so, the throttle became responsive without hesitation. RandyA
  15. The more I hear these horror stories, the more I like living in Tennessee. We do not have to put tags on a trailer if it does not exceed 16 feet. We can register it if we want. We also do not have an automobile state inspection where you get ripped off coming and going and we also do not have a state income tax. We are just a bunch of rednecks that don't know we need these things:cool10: RandyA
  16. Well, on a positive note, in another week and a half, we will be at the midpoint of winter. Now, don't that just make you feel real warm and fuzzy? RandyA
  17. Thanks for the update Lew. You know I am thinking about you two. RandyA
  18. Nancy, thank you so very much for sharing all this information with us. As I noted, mine come through to local Veterans Administration, and I have no idea which lab they use. It does sound like the concern of having a very narrow band down the middle for what is in focus at the top, may be typical with these type glasses. RandyA
  19. I am not having a problem finding the sweet spot in moving my head up and down, my frustration is if I am looking distant, I have to move my head if I need to look as little as 10º off center and stay in focus. RandyA
  20. Think of it this way. What would you say if you went to the dealer and had new tires put on your bike, brought it home and checked date codes and found them to be four years old. You would go back. If nothing else, consider you are buying four year old tires, along with everything else. RandyA
  21. Not springs, glasses. I know there are several on here that as part of the maturing process have gone to wearing glasses. For a long time now I have used reader type glasses and they work good at that narrow plane of focus they are designed for. I have again decided to try progressive lens as I really don't care for bi-focals, not because I am vain, but they are aggrivating and after some minor tweeks in my cataract surgery, my distant vision is very good. This is actually the third time I have tried the progressive lenses in about 12 years and have not done too good so far. One of the problems I had was due to me picking out a larger frame with bigger lenses and I seemed to have to do too much tilt to get into the bi focal part. This time I got smaller frames and it seems better. The problem with these glasses is I seem to have a fairly narrow strip up the middle that is in focus for distance. If I look just a little off center, I am out of focus, and remember, this is across the top, and normally to me the entire area across the top should be in focus for distance vision. so, I am looking for a little feedback for those that may be able to help. I am going back by the VA in the next day or so and talk to them. RandyA
  22. If I ever win the lottery, there will be a 1987 GNX Grand National in my garage. RandyA
  23. At the moment I have four, two male, two female, all fixed. My future ex may be able to take one when she gets her appartment, so you can have all you want. RandyA
  24. Several years ago I took the cover off my stock seat and took it to an upholsterer and he replaced the front section near the tank cover for $5. I put the cover back on and it did fine. It was not hard to do, just a bit of work. RandyA
  25. I did finally replace the front springs with progressives last summer and I did not use any spacers. With the shocks topped out with the front tire off the ground, without a spacer, the height of the spring was about where the threaded insert bottomed out. This is in essence no preload. But, it still has the front of the bike higher than it was. I have thought about sliding the forks up some now that I do not run any air pressure and I can remove the air sleeve, but there is very little room before the fork tops start to hit the grills above them. I am also concerned about losing shock oil through the air hole in the fork tube. As I am losing more weight, I need to start looking for a bigger girlfriend to equal things out on the bike. RandyA
