2nd gen gear ratio is: 1st 2.437:1 2nd 1.57:1 3rd 1.160:1 4th 0.906:1 5th 0.750 As you can see, 1st gen 5th and 2nd gen 4th is same. RandyA

All I know is mine was doing ok until the Norton download and in the middle of it I got the "low on memory" box and now it is real slow. RandyA

Actually, it is my understanding that the whine comes out of the clutch basket and should not have anything to do with the actual trans set up. I have also thought about just swapping gears on to my shafts to keep all the spacing with the pertinent shims in place. But, I did think about that. RandyA

I have not set it in with the forks and drum in place yet. At this point, I was just wanting to make sure that mama Yamaha did not open the case up more for more needed room. It is my desire to couple this trans with a V-max rear so it will actually be a bit lower in 1st gear and it will just increase the gear spacing between gears. I still suspect that an 8,000rpm shift out of 1st gear to 2nd will still be well within the power band. I have heard that those with the V-Max rear in their 2nd gens are a lot happier with the set up. RandyA

I have an old HP Pavaillion computer that the only thing I have done to it is add a memory card. Well, my internet provider Comcast has a free download of Norton antivirus. I decided last night that I would try it and now my computer is really screwed up. It takes about 5 minutes just to download the Comcast homepage. Then, to go on any site, like VR, takes several more minutes. I have rebooted it several times and it does not matter. I am at work now and when I get home I am going to see what I can do with it and am open for any suggestions. I am not very computer literate, so any instructions need to be pretty basic. I need to upgrade the whole computer, but that is not on my budget priority list right now. Thanks for any help. RandyA

Bad motorcycle crash in Phoenix, several dead
Venturous Randy replied to FutureVentures's topic in Watering Hole
That last link says he was "fishing for papers". We have a local trial going on where a guy was trying to reach a CD he dropped and crossed the centerline in a curve and hit a car head on. One killed and several severely injured. To some, driving is the last thing some of these people have on their mind. This is so sad. RandyA I just read the local paper and the guy was aquitted yesterday on everything. The jury just said it was human error, like he did not break any laws. The DA did try to convince the jury that it is against the law to drive on the wrong side of the road. -
I guess with the right homemade brackets, you could put 1st gen plastic on it. RandyA

I have set the 2nd gen gearset into the old 86 1st gen block that I have and so far I do not see anything that looks like it would not work. With some larger diameter gears due to the 5th gear overdrive, I was concerned about clearance problems, but so far, so good. I have set the gears in both halves and will post some pictures. RandyA

I have found that in the 106,000 miles I have put on my bike and several sets of tires, the weights on the wheels always stay in the same spot and usually don't need much change. Maybe it is my wheel that needs the balance? RandyA

Water heaters, man that's all I mess with all day long. Actually, I work in the Product Engineering Lab for the largest water heater company around. It would be interesting to me to know what brand you have and what type it is. To be in manufacturing in the USA, this is not a bad business to be in. First of all, tank type water heaters are big, therefore we are not going to get over run with heaters from all over the world. Next, people have gotten used to having hot water, and when there is a serious problem, they go buy another one. For a major appliance that is used everyday, they are not very expensive. Of our business, 80% is replacement and 10% go in to new home construction. Therefore, the drop in new home construction has not had a major impact on our sales. And about 10% is shipped to China. Yep, shipped to China. Anyway, wished you lived closer and maybe I could have gotten you a test unit or something. RandyA

Hey Goose, with some extremely technical assistance, he was able to resolve his problem. Evidently you missed it. RandyA

I used to have a reverse gear, but she don't ride with me anymore, but I am going to be getting another one with a lot less miles on it. RandyA

Even though I am very familiar with most of it, The Blue Ridge Parkway is my favorite place. Not only because of the maginificant scenery and the sweeping curves, but no commercial traffic really makes it special. And, given that it is special, I have noticed that other riders on the BRP seem a bit more friendly. What also makes the BRP very special is the many places that can be visited that are near by, whether it is a ride to a neat mountain town, a good hike or visiting a waterfall. I am about an hours drive to the parkway near the Little Switzerland area. RandyA

If you want the best of both worlds, get you a V-Max rear end as it is about 10% lower geared. Actually, both 4th and 5th is an overdrive as 4th is about .906 and 5th is about .750 with the lower the number, the higher it is geared. RandyA

Yes mick, but it is supposed to be about 69º today here in good old east Tennessee. RandyA

This is definitely an area that scares the crap out of me. It is bad enough to try to keep up with all the stuff you are coming toward, but those idiots behind you can get you quick. I know it may not help much, but I have two strobes inside the trunk lights and a 9 bulb LED on top of the trunk under the rack that oscillates from one side to the other when I put on the brakes. I feel it is probably even more effective at night when people have more of a problem with depth perception on a narrow vehicle. I used to have strobes mounted inside the tail light lens, but I was pulled over by a Tennessee State Trooper who advised me that I could not have strobes behind a red lens. He was real nice about it and understood my concern about getting run over, but he said he just wanted me to know that it was illegal. RandyA

The only thing that I have seen change is if I add more weight to the bike, passenger/stuff in bags, I need to air up the suspension some or I will drag easier. There is not any difference than I am aware of about obvious lean angle, but simply that the bike is riding lower to the ground. A little added rear shock air corrects that for me. RandyA

Have 83 VR handlebar options?
Venturous Randy replied to OldBull's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My risers look like chrome. Several years ago I stripped the clear coat and polished them and now, ever month or so I will use a little aluminum polish, like Mother's, and they look great and it only takes a couple of minutes. This is not a hard job and you don't have to take them off, even though I originally took mine off and polished them with a buffing wheel. RandyA -
Enjoy an hour longer of daylight in the evenings!!!!!! RandyA

This month, my bike is 27 years old and this month I will have had it 14 years. It has about 129,000 miles on it and I have put about 106,000 on of those miles. I too, bought the bike from an owner that had done very little to it as he had it a little over a year and had put 109 miles on it. I also have a fairly unique bike and have made a lot of changes, such as plastic mods and paint. It fits me very well, given my short inseam and is a strong running bike. The down side of all this for me is as I am going through this divorce and now paying immediate spousal support prior to the divorce and then alimony after the divorce, along with the tax changes in going from married to single, I have had about $350 a month take home come out of what I am living off of. Now, to some of you that may not be a big deal, but with all the other stuff I am paying for, like a big credit card bill she run up that I am currently making the payments on, the $12,000 second mortage loan I got a couple of years ago that paid off a credit card she ran up(see a pattern here?), it is going to get real tight. But, in the theme of this post, is it worth it on the bike? I can not imagine going through all I have since mid November and what I know I will in the future if I did not have this bike to look forward to, plain and simple. I have almost wondered if this has helped keep me alive. I just really hope that in the future, I will not only be able to keep the bike, but I hope I will be able to enjoy riding it. Good post snaggletooth. RandyA This is the picture from our 07 calender. Since then I put on the Corbin seat and armrests.

Does it matter whether it is on the side stand leaning over or sitting up straight? RandyA -
I guess I am pretty lucky as my cholesterol has never been over 140 and the last check was about 120. My triglycerides were 57 and 60 was the bottom of the normal range. My last heart check turned up clean in all the plumbing. I don't know why I am like that as I eat all the wrong things and get very little exercize. My problem has been diabeties and my hemoglobin A1C went from 11 to 6.6 after I quit loading on sweets routinely. I weighed 200 this morning and in mid November I was about 242. RandyA
