  6. You may be right condor, but I believe I have fixed both the hi and low beam thru the CMS. I have fixed several of the CMS's over the years, but my memory is a lot older than my bike. RandyA
  7. I recalibrated my 83 many years ago and knew it was close. Last week with a friends GPS on my bike it was 70 indicated on the bike with the GPS going from 70 to 71, so I got it pretty close, or the GPS is off. I also did mine by moving my needle from a known point to how much it was off. I just pulled mine over the stop pin and marked where it was when it was relaxed and then moved the needle how much it was off, but mine was only about 5mph off to start with. 15 to 20 mph off it a lot. The squeal is almost always from the bearing at the base of the speedometer being dry and will fail or break the cable if you keep riding it. RandyA
  8. Yeah, it keeps going up. I paid about 14.99 for the large can last time. But, I notice that Advance Auto has Sea Foam for $6.99 a can after it went up a bunch. Maybe people starting looking around and sales went down after jacking the price up so much. RandyA

  11. It may help to put a little penitrating oil around it. What I would do is take a small hammer and tap on the top of the fitting. With two different metals, corrosion is somewhat normal over a long period of time and by tapping it, it may break the corrosion loose between the threads. You might even peck on it while you are twisting it. RandyA
  12. It sounds like you have been thru everything, but one of the things that has worked for me is I take the banjo fitting off at the master and use my finger as a check valve. This way, it seems to do a better job of filling the void in the master. After I do it a couple of times, I will get better fluid with each movement of the lever, then I put the banjo fitting back on. RandyA
  13. Since you are new at this, and welcome aboard, these bikes do not run too good with the airbox off, if you have not put it back on. The next big thing that can have an effect on the running is if the pilot jets are blocked. The Sea Foam may help that. RandyA
  14. My dad went in the Navy at 16 before Pearl Harbor and finished up on Guadalcanal at the end of the war. He was a good man and I lost him 10 years ago this coming August. Thanks Aussie. RandyA

  16. I have borrowed a friends GPS and one thing I thought it would have is elevation. My son bought my grandson a GPS several years ago and it was pretty basic, but it had elevation for the location you were. Evidently, this Garmin does not have that feature. Do other GPS's have the elevation feature? RandyA
  17. Having been thru the undercutting on 83 gears and later on replacing them with an 86 gearset, I will tell you what I encountered. First of all, I strongly suspect your 2nd gear fork is bent. Not a big deal and you can straighten it if you would rather not buy a new one. When you take it apart, you will see score marks on the tips of the forks on one side and in the U of the forks on the other side. You can pull the forks back in place, but you will need something to be able to verify the forks are perpendictular with the axis of the shaft. You can use the gearset itself to see how it is making contact in the slot, but that is not easy. Before you disassemble everything, see if you can lock the nut that sticks out where the cover is, I believe it is refered to as the middle gear, so that does not turn. Then if you can put an indicator on the u-joint and rock it back and forth you can determine how much play there in in that gear. When I put mine together, I used the the 86 output gear and it was not as quiet as the 83 setup and it also leaked around the shaft seal. I ended up putting the 83 output shaft back in and it was quieter than ever before. I now have a 2nd gen RSV gearset that I want to upgrade to and will be revisiting this again. I have also thought about just swapping the gears from one shaft to another and keeping all the shim spacing I now have. Keep us posted. RandyA
  18. I have two small strobes mounted in the lenses on the trunk lightbar and I also have a small LED under the grill on the trunk, both wired into the brake circuit. The only time a LEO took issue was when I had strobes inside the tail light lens and he said I could not have a colored strobe. I showed him the strobes I had in my headlight and he did not take issue with that. RandyA

  20. I have put over 106,000 miles on my 83 with many tires. I found that the Avon Venom X's were by far the best low speed handling of the bunch, but at anything over 65mph I began to have a tail waggle, and so did others have this problem. When I replaced the rear with an Elite 3, the bike still handled pretty nimble. When the front Elite 3 finally became available, I put one on. Even though the Elite 3's were not as nimble as the Avons, the neutrial feeling and stability was was noticeably improved. In reality, I believe the best combination for handling was the Avon on the front and the Elite 3 on the rear. RanyA
  21. In the last 15 years I have put about 115,000 miles on a motorcycle. Most of these were with my wife. We were lucky and other than a few tip overs, one at low speed while making a u-turn while on a slope going too slow that caused some skint knees, we did very well. The bike has been a big part of our entertainment. But, I must admit that the fear of hurting her was always in my mind. Now, as several of you have noted, I too am going through a divorce and will have to deal with what my future holds with a passenger. In the future, would it be a dealbreaker to meet someone that refused to ride with me? I don't know, but it would be something to think about. I know there are some wonderful places I would love to share a ride with someone, especially with someone that appreciates it and enjoys it. I do know that I sure have had some requests to take some for a ride. Yes, getting on a motorcycle is obviously more exposed to danger than most any other vehicle. But the exposure and openness is the very thing that makes riding so special. Does luck have anything to do with surviving? Probably, but being deligent, having loud air horns with my thumb on the button, a strobe in my headlight and strobes across the trunk when I apply the brakes seems to help too. RandyA
  22. My 83 is like an 89 because I changed out the whole thing to an 89 unit and am very glad I did. That was one of the best upgrades that I did. Thanks for the post Carl as I was just about to say the same thing. RandyA
  23. What I do is get some one inch planks and rock the bike to one side and put a plank under one foot, then rock it to the other side and put a plank or two under the other side. By doing this a couple of times, you can raise the back of the bike up some and get more clearance and it still be stable. RandyA

  25. I have had several of the small dial gages that have been close and way off. I agree that they should be verified. I do have a digital "no air loss" gage that I use when checking the rear shock as my bike is a standard and does not have the class system. I have progressives in the front and no longer run air. RandyA
