  1. Remove all of the YICS stuff and plug the ports with good caps. The bike does not need it and many have problems with all that stuff being old and cracked. I removed mine a couple of years ago and it runs great. RandyA
  2. I was getting about 38/40 before replacing diaphragms and doing shim mod. Now, if I don't do much 70+ interstate runs, I am getting from 46/49. The diaphragms may have helped a little, but the biggest difference was the shim mod. The 46/49 I am getting has been mostly two up and not being babied. RandyA
  3. Is there gonna any be reruns to keep us going in the meantime? Can you forward any interesting texts you may get from her? Your not just gonna leave us hanging are you....are you....are you? RandyA
  4. Another easy thing that can be done on the needle shim mod is to take the stock shim and remove the raised bump on one surface. This will change it about .020 or so and will help without getting into the area of being too lean. We did this with Elmiko's bike, rather than putting in new washers and it worked great. RandyA
  5. I always look at the rotors. With over 100,000 miles on the bike, there should be some noticable wear on the rotors. This is usually easy to check. RandyA
  6. Yeah, this is better than a soap opera and survivor combined!! RandyA
  7. Well, like several other encounters on here lately, I had mine tonight. I was on a two lane 45 mph highway about 100 to 150 feet behind a car. He suddenly braked and I did also and I saw a deer move from the front of his car off to the right. Then, I realized there was another deer that was now going from my left to right between the car and me. I was already slowing some, but had to jump on the brakes real hard. I could not have missed this deer more than a couple of inches. Then out of the left corner of my eye, I saw another deer coming into the road that ran between me and the car behind me. Fortunately, the car behind me was not tailgating, but I am sure he saw everything. This is the closest I have ever come to hitting anything on this bike in 110,000 miles. I really don't see how I missed it. I did sideswipe a deer that was coming up into the road several years ago in my wife's Maxima and then two weeks later t-boned a black bear in my 280ZX that ran across the road. I have enjoyed riding at night, especially after upgrading to the MKII headlight with PIAA bulb along with some good driving/fog lights along with having successful cataract surgery that has helped my night vision tremendously. But, I must say, this one scared me. RandyA
  8. All though I have not made it offical yet, I have said I would rather be cremated and my ashes thrown to the wind at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Maybe even invite some of my Venture buddies to be part of it. RandyA
  9. An oily/wet looking plug may indicate a bad carb diaphragm. Make sure he checks his oil level on the centerstand. Sure is nice to have one of you highly mechanical 2nd genners help us out with our poor 1st gens. RandyA
  10. Sounds to me like you have something grounding out. RandyA
  11. Ok, I am curious, since you had the yellow and she had the red, was she sited for failure to yield? And if she was, her insurance would be responsible for fixing your vehicle. That is the way I see it in my book. RandyA
  12. After Metzlers, Avons(rear end weave) and Elite II's, I am loving the Elite III's from Dunlop. RandyA
  13. George, it isn't a low voltage problem as much as having voltge when the brakes are off. I suspect he has a ground problem on the light wire and it is feeding back thru the brake wire. RandyA
  14. In the last week I also have had at least three cages try to change lanes right into me, along with a couple pulling out with me a bit too close. I have gotten to the point that I generally ride in traffic with my thumb on the horn button and my old air horns from Harbor Freight are still plenty loud. In all cases but one, the cager quickly pulled back in their lane. One time, as I was on the four lane going around Bristol Motor Speedway, I had a woman in a big Lincoln just change lanes with no signal or anything. She was about half way over when I hit the air horns and she kept coming. I hit the brakes and was at about her rear bumper and she barely cleared me. I stayed on the horns as I moved away from her then she turned her right signal light on and moved over after she passed the other car. I immediately shot up beside her and gave her a good look and she knew what she did. The next light caught us and I guess I am glad there was a car in front of her that caused us to be staggered so I was not beside her. Thanks for doing this post as I am always telling other bikers how absolutely important loud horns are. RandyA

    Fathers

Thanks for both of those videos. I had the "Father" song by Chet Atkins on a tape somewhere and have not heard it in years. My son gave me a CD the other day with 50 Chet Atkins songs on it and I was hopeing that would be on it, but it wasn't. My last name is Atkins and my dad and I both were big Chet Atkins fans. My dad died in 2000 and I sure miss him. RandyA
  16. Yep and it was a wonderful weekend. RandyA
  17. I gassed up just outside Breaks State Park on the KY/VA border Saturday afternoon and got 48.9mpg on my 83. Some of that was running a lot in 3rd and 4th gear thru some of the mountain roads. RandyA
  18. After loosing 55 pounds so far, I am finding it a lot easier to jump up on the seat and stand up(Yammer, if you try this, don't take pictures). As I get better at it, maybe I will take the bike off the center stand, not! These pictures were taken in front of a beautiful wall mural in Burnsville, NC as part of a great ride yesterday. RandyA
  19. Thanks, I needed that, I really did. RandyA
  20. Curtis, there should be a small spring on the plunger when you take the lever off. You may have to stretch the spring a little before it will keep the lever pushed all the way out. RandyA
  21. Sounds to me like you may have too much fluid in the rear master. RandyA
  22. Last summer I went to Breaks State Park, which overlaps KY and VA. I came in from the KY side and met many riders without helmets. Just before I got to the VA line I was passed by a couple of loud HD's with riders with no helmets. Just after passing into VA, I rounded a curve and there in a pulloff was the two HD's with VA State Troopers doing a license check. The troopers had the HD's pulled over to the side and as I pulled up to the trooper checking the line of vehicles, he was nice to me as he could be, even joking a little. I would say the HD riders got nailed for several things as you could hear them coming from a mile away. So, if you do ride in KY or SC, make sure you put your helmet on before crossing the state line as the LEO's are looking for this. RandyA
  23. I don't know brand names, but I use the one on my 83 all the time. I did have to do some work on it as it was not wanting to latch good. I tweaked on it a little and it works better then it ever did. RandyA
  24. For many years on all my vehicles, I have kept a small notebook that I keep maintenance notes and other pertinant data. Sometimes I may just make a note as to where I was on a given day and what was going on. It can make for interesting reading on a cold snowy day. The notebook in my bike is over 14 years old. The one in my bike is about 3 by 6 inches. I don't keep gas records in it, but I may make a note after I have done a mod that has affected gas mileage. RandyA
  25. Yeah, I was introduced to a lady a while back and after some interesting conversation, she reached over and whispered in my ear that she was bi. I thought, this could get interesting, until I figured out what polar meant. RandyA
