1983 carb trouble?
Venturous Randy replied to RonE's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My first suggestion with you running a bunch of stuff thru your carbs is to put in new sparkplugs and check the caps and wires. The caps have a resistor in them that can get corroded and cause all kinds of problems. RandyA -
Wow, that's interesting. Looks like you may have been the first one to go into that area of the bike since it was new. I cannot imagine getting that tape worm in that area any other way. I am surprised the thing did not make a bunch of noise before. As far as your current noise, it could be the nut is now being broken off the pinion, but I would think that would be more pronounced during decelleration than what you are describing. RandyA

flb_78 keeps saying this is fake because the lines on the road moved. The scene is being recorded by a camera on a tripod that swivels. When the impact occured, it appears to me that the cameraman was simply surprised and it cause him to move the camera more. It may be staged, but the lines on the road comment does not hold water for me. RandyA

Several years ago I went to Walmart and picked up an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer or about $9. The outdoor part has a wire on it with a small thermocouple on the end. I mounted the thermometer above my left vent, which now has a radar detector in it and run the wire up under my mirror boot and it sticks out just below the mirror. I like this because it is in the shade and still well out in the wind. I have had it on my bike for many years and it still works well. I have also have the same thermometer in both of my cars. I may try to post a picture when I get home from work. RandyA

There are some Jardines on ebay right now starting at $100. I think that is about what the last set sold for. I have had Jardines for about 12 years and like them. RandyA -
I know who they are!!! RandyA

Replace lights in dash
Venturous Randy replied to joyride's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not a big deal to take off the windshield trim and windshield and top of dash cover. I hate to say it, but if this is a big deal, you really don't need a 27 year old motorcycle unless you have plenty of money to pay someone else to work on it. RandyA -
How do you know the modulating headlight did not save your life? What if that was the one thing someone noticed that was going to pull out in front of you, but didn't. You would not know this unless they ran you down and told you. I am not a big fan of modulating headlights and have run strobes in my headlight for about 14 years. Yes, I have had people tell me that they noticed them and made them look twice. But, strobes are technically illegal. RandyA

Follow-up to motorcyclist killed in Indy in police crash
Venturous Randy replied to Mel's topic in Watering Hole
Several years ago we had a cop out of Boone, NC on the lake one night run over another boat and killed a friend of mine. Even though he was way over the legal limit, because the deputy gave him an alcohol test, rather than the game warden, it did not count and he walked. RandyA -
I thought it may have been the spacer dropping a little, but I see you spread the slit at the pinch bolt and it went in. RandyA

My 83, which was made in May, 83, has the rubber straps. Not sure if it was originally that way. RandyA- 14 replies

Welcome Back Muffinman................
Venturous Randy replied to DragonRider's topic in Watering Hole
It was really great to see Muffinman and Mini show up unexpectedly in Asheville. I was sitting there lounging and saw a couple of bikes pull in, but I did not realize who they were. Then here comes Muffinman and it made my day!!! I knew he was tired but it was obvious he was glad to be there. RandyA -
I don't know how I managed to do it but the large sleeve my canopy goes into disappeared. I did not realize this until I was packing everything up. I even checked the two large trashbags and did not see it. So, if anyone has any idea where the sleeve went, please let me know as I borrowed it from my son. Thanks, RandyA

For those of you that have been to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, you may know that they have their own winery and do tours of the winery and give taste tests. Well, to maybe add to the culture of the early Asheville folks and especially since we had twelve bottles of homemade wine, we had a wine and cheese tasting session. What made this even better was Woody (SylWoody)and his wife Katrina brought some really good tasting wine, and I mean really good tasting. It really started out nicely in being able to taste the richness of the flavors and compare one particular wine against another. But unfortunately, after a few samples, I believe we may have lost some of the tasting abilities as I think some of our taste buds begin to loose their effectiveness. It was also a bit of a problem as some seemed to not have any interest at all in tasting any of the cheese. So, any way, I thought I would post some pictures in this endeavor to add some class to this group, but I am not sure how effective this was. RandyA

problem
Venturous Randy replied to chefjim's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Another thing is having a big vacuum leak on the YICS ports. It takes overcoming the leak to have enough vacuum to open the carb slide up. Wide open it can run strong, but drop it down and that cylinder falls out. Another thing it sounds like is a blocked pilot jet or two. RandyA -
I will need to get your emergency info if you want to be listed on the ICE list and get a copy. I will need it it before I go to bed tonight. PM me here. RandyA

Ignition coil question
Venturous Randy replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The first thing I would do is check the basic tune up items. I would also take a look at the spark plug caps. They can get corroded inside in the resistor and will fire intermittenly. RandyA
