  1. Yeah, since I won't be making those huge 2nd gen payments, I'll treat you to a hot dog at DQ!!! RandyA
  2. Earl, I figured you would enjoy the jab. My bike has about 142,000 miles on it and really runs strong, but I am beginning to get more oil into the breather area that I figure is ring blowby and I run the oil level in the middle to slightly lower. My bike does not seem to use any oil, but as you say, this would be an excellent opportunity to build another 83 engine with all the things I want to do, such as solid motor mounts(hint SGN) and just do a swap out. Actually, I was considering a re-ring as part of the trans swap, but I really did not want to. Thanks for the encouragement guys and I do hope it works out for the good, RandyA
  3. For many of you that are not of the southern persuasion, this means you are buying something you know very little about and not real sure what you are going to get. Anyway, yesterday I bought another 1st gen. It was listed on Craigslist as an 86 with needing some work for $600 and it was about 85 miles away. Thankfully for me, Skydoc did the last run for a bike that was not worth going after, so to say the least, I went into this with very little expectations. See Skydoc, you did a good thing for some of us and may not have realized it and no I am not going to contribute to your gas fund. Before I decided to take off, he did agree to come down to $550 so that helped a little. When I got there the first thing was that it was an 85 instead of an 86 and I let him know I was disappointed in that and the 85 may still have the 2nd gear transmission problem, which by the way, with his experience with 1st gens he was aware of. I did mention that the problem was apparently solved in the 1450 range on the serial number on 85 models . This one turned out to be 1588. The bike is a Royale and complete as best I can tell, but had an electrical problem that he said was an igniter or whatever. I suspect a TCI, but won't know for sure until I get into it. While discussing options, his buddy also mentioned there was an 83 engine in their parts warehouse that only had 30,000 miles on it. We took a look at it and it looked pretty good and with me planning on converting my 83 engine that has an 86 transmission over to the 2001 Venture transmission this winter, I was thinking I may be able to convert that one and replace the engine in my bike. So, I asked what he would have to have for the 85 bike and the 83 engine and he said I could have it all for $550 and I took it. Again, all this is a pig in a poke, so I won't know how well I did until I start going thru everything after I get it home. I did notice that the 85 had a real nice backrest on it. RandyA
  4. I don't remember seeing any pictures of your bike other than your avatar, so if you haven't posted any, you NEED to. Say hi to Glenda for me and she's right purty too. RandyA
  5. Got to meet up with Elmicko and his wife Saturday for an absolutely beautiful 70º ride thru the country. Not only was the ride great, but the 2nd gen he just got is stunning with the paint job it has. It has been painted deep blue with blue flames and it is beautiful. Now, I could fall in love with a 2nd gen like that. Wow, did I really say that? Anyway, it was great, even though when I met up with them I had just dropped a cylinder and had to go back to Advance Auto for some spray I used in the jets in the top of the carbs and a can of Sea Foam. Once I did that, I was back to running good again. Mick, ya done real good. RandyA
  6. The driver that run off the road has now been charged with DUI and was from Mexico driving his girlfriend's car. I bet there was not a penny's insurance on the guy that ran into them. Can you imaging how stupid someone would have to be to pass that many motorcycles at one time and i bet they get him. RandyA
  7. That's cool Thom and fits you. I bet your bike pulling the scooter behind it will still outrun most 2nd gens. RandyA
  8. Been down that road more than once in my life and it is not fun. I have always managed to get by until something comes along and have always been able to stay in this part of the country. I will be thinking about you buddy and maybe can get over to see you sometime. RandyA
  9. Just had a discussion with my lady on how much I would love to take a trip to Key West. We even talked about trailering the bike down into FL and maybe finding a VR member that would let me leave the car and trailer and ride down from there. This just happened this morning before I left for work. RandyA
  10. Would you take $400 for it like this one went for? RandyA
  11. I bought one at $44,99 plus $5 shipping. It will be something to play with. Thanks for the heads-up. RandyA
  12. I passed this site around to several friends and one of them sent me this back. Looks like there may be varing opinions. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/online/1saleaday.html RandyA
  13. Little middle age crazy going on? RandyA
  14. (but the cable has been replaced by the shop last year and I know what a squealing speedo cable sounds like.) But, do you know what a dry bearing in a speedometer sounds like? Ditto on what Jeff said as that was my first thought also. You may be just before the squeal stage that can just about scare the crap out of you when it squeals. RandyA
  15. It is located above the front cylinders between bottom of the battery box and steering. The best thing to do is just remove the hoses from the ports where they go into the heads below the carbs and put some heavy duty caps and clamps on them. It is easy to do except for one that is hard to get to. I took my YICS off a couple of years ago and wish I had done it sooner. RandyA
  16. We needed this to kill the mosquitoes. About 28 this morning, but near 70º in a day or so. Can you say that? RandyA
  17. You are bad, Gerald!!!! RandyA
  18. During Linda's and my trip to the Outer Banks during my birthday weekend in late September, we had one of those momentary encounters that made me think. I missed the turn that would have been toward the northern strip of the Outer Banks where Kitty Hawk is located and ended up going up toward Chesapeake Bay, Va. When I realized what had happened, I made a u-turn and came upon a rest area. The interesting thing was one side of the rest area was the highway and on the other side was a canal with a dock. When we pulled in, I noticed there was a sail boat docked there that was probably between 35 to 40 feet long. A real nice boat. The couple on the boat was waiting for a lock or something to open and had several hours to kill. I went in to use the rest room and Linda, being the friendly person she is, had walked over and struck up a conversation with the couple and was admiring their boat. They were both very friendly and seemed to appreciate having someone to talk to during their wait. The wife was more of the quiet type and the husband was more the type A personality. After we got back on the bike and back on the highway, Linda mentioned that while the husband was showing me the boat, the wife had moved closer to her and in a low voice, mentioned that she used to ride. It was like she did not want her husband to hear her say this. Now, this made Linda and me both wonder what this was all about and was this with a previous marriage, or boy friend or what, but Linda felt like it must have been something she had enjoyed doing with the way she said it. It also made me wonder if the woman would have rather been on the back of, or even driving a motorcycle, than to be confined to that sailboat. RandyA
  19. Actually, here in the mountains of east Tennesee, our weather is more moderate. We have cooler summers and warmer winters than most of the country north of us and a lot cooler summers than the country south of us. Even in the middle of the summer, an hours ride may get me in the lower 70's or even upper 60's, but we are at elevations over 6,000 feet. It is a beautiful place to live if you like riding in the mountains. RandyA
  20. From 11am until dark, I was outside in shorts today and tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful also. I feel blessed I was born here and call this part of the country home. RandyA
  21. Right before I turned 14, and all my friends were starting to smoke, I got a motorcycle, a 125 Ducati. A pack of cigarettes and a gallon of gas were about the same and I felt I could have a lot more fun on a gallon of gas, than a pack of cigarettes. Just keep in mind, smoking is not a natural thing to do and you had to teach yourself to smoke. Cigarettes are simply a drug delivery system. RandyA
  22. Ditto. They can be removed and some probably come off easier than others, but they are also easy to crack or chip when trying to get the lens off. The headlight unit shows up on ebay fairly routinely and sometimes go cheap or they get bid up a bit. If you don't need it real quickly, just watch ebay and see what pops up, or we may have a member on here that has one. RandyA
  23. First of all, welcome to the site and it will be the best $12 investment you will ever make in your bike. Next, when asking a question, please make sure you note what particular bike you have, such as in your case, an 83 Venture. Now for your question. Can we assume the left side engine cover was removed? I ask this because our intrepretation of "shift pin" may be not be what you meant. Can we also assume you did not put a new gasket on? Another area for a leak is where the stator wires go thru the grommet. Can you tell where the leak is actually coming from? To actually answer your question, you can get the gasket from Yamaha, or there are probably several others on here that stock that gasket. RandyA
  24. Carb syncing should be done on ocassion, even if the bike is running fine. It is easy to do and if you check around, you may find a local member that will be delighted to do it for you. If you wanted to come toward Johnson City, I can do it for you. I also suggest that you check your carb diaphragms and your fuel mixture settings. All of this is in here and if you have not figured it out yet, this will be the best $12 you will ever spend on your bike by joining this group. RandyA
  25. I also came out of the Venturers group, but never felt at home there. I made a trip to Birmingham on the bike and while there ran into Don Harrell and his wife, who asked me if I was going to Vogal and my response was "What's a Vogal?" I went on Ventureriders and have met some really great folks and feel truly blessed to be here. Not sure when I joined, but it was just before Vogal 1. RandyA
