Well, I got my $44.49 Motorola GPS in the mail yesterday. At first, I was a little concerned as when I turned it on, I was about a half mile from the house. But, in a couple of minutes it had me spot on. I programmed home on it and went for a ride and at about 7 miles away, I asked it to take me home and it worked perfectly. I also compared the speed and it seemed right on and it gives altitude/elevation and that seemed real close. So, even though I am not much of a GPS person, it may come in handy when I am looking for something. It also has two mounting systems, one that works good on the windshield and one that had a stiff but flexible extension and I can make that work real good on the bike. I just wish now that I had bought two of them. RandyA

Be careful of any parts listed by "absolutecycle09". He will list a part that might bring $30 to $50 in an auction with a starting bid of .99. But when you look at his shipping cost he may have $100 on that item. I called him on a rear shock he had $125 shipping on and asked why the high charges and he said I have to make my money someway on it. I asked why he did not just raise his minimum bid and he would not answer. He is just looking for someone that does not look at the shipping charge and will buy something. RandyA

I can truly understand how you feel. I can honestly say that with going thru a divorce after a 41 year marriage and all associated with that, I don't know how well I would have survived had it not been for the therapy I got from the time on the motorcycle. In fact, I put 50% more miles on the bike this year than any in the 15 years I have had this bike. Whether it was a sunny day or not, there were days when I took off that I just seemed to be riding out from under a big black cloud into beautiful sunshine, and you can't get much better therapy than that. I hope you get in a good ride into a sunny and bright day. RandyA

A nasty sound

Earl is right on this one, as usual, it is the bearing in the speedometer where the cable goes into. I usually have taken the speedometer out of the dash and lubed the bearing from the inside, but I now have a fitting I made to not have to do that. The hole where the cable goes into does not go thru so any lube needs to go between the bearing and the housing. For anyone else that may experience this, don't keep riding or you may ruin the bearing. If you have to, take the cable housing loose at the wheel and pull the cable out and put away somewhere so it will not slide out of the housing. Earl, I figured you would enjoy the jab. My bike has about 142,000 miles on it and really runs strong, but I am beginning to get more oil into the breather area that I figure is ring blowby and I run the oil level in the middle to slightly lower. My bike does not seem to use any oil, but as you say, this would be an excellent opportunity to build another 83 engine with all the things I want to do, such as solid motor mounts(hint SGN) and just do a swap out. Actually, I was considering a re-ring as part of the trans swap, but I really did not want to. Thanks for the encouragement guys and I do hope it works out for the good, RandyA

For many of you that are not of the southern persuasion, this means you are buying something you know very little about and not real sure what you are going to get. Anyway, yesterday I bought another 1st gen. It was listed on Craigslist as an 86 with needing some work for $600 and it was about 85 miles away. Thankfully for me, Skydoc did the last run for a bike that was not worth going after, so to say the least, I went into this with very little expectations. See Skydoc, you did a good thing for some of us and may not have realized it and no I am not going to contribute to your gas fund. Before I decided to take off, he did agree to come down to $550 so that helped a little. When I got there the first thing was that it was an 85 instead of an 86 and I let him know I was disappointed in that and the 85 may still have the 2nd gear transmission problem, which by the way, with his experience with 1st gens he was aware of. I did mention that the problem was apparently solved in the 1450 range on the serial number on 85 models . This one turned out to be 1588. The bike is a Royale and complete as best I can tell, but had an electrical problem that he said was an igniter or whatever. I suspect a TCI, but won't know for sure until I get into it. While discussing options, his buddy also mentioned there was an 83 engine in their parts warehouse that only had 30,000 miles on it. We took a look at it and it looked pretty good and with me planning on converting my 83 engine that has an 86 transmission over to the 2001 Venture transmission this winter, I was thinking I may be able to convert that one and replace the engine in my bike. So, I asked what he would have to have for the 85 bike and the 83 engine and he said I could have it all for $550 and I took it. Again, all this is a pig in a poke, so I won't know how well I did until I start going thru everything after I get it home. I did notice that the 85 had a real nice backrest on it. RandyA

Got to meet up with Elmicko and his wife Saturday for an absolutely beautiful 70º ride thru the country. Not only was the ride great, but the 2nd gen he just got is stunning with the paint job it has. It has been painted deep blue with blue flames and it is beautiful. Now, I could fall in love with a 2nd gen like that. Wow, did I really say that? Anyway, it was great, even though when I met up with them I had just dropped a cylinder and had to go back to Advance Auto for some spray I used in the jets in the top of the carbs and a can of Sea Foam. Once I did that, I was back to running good again. Mick, ya done real good. RandyA

5 dead in major motorcycle crash
Venturous Randy replied to midnightventure's topic in Watering Hole
The driver that run off the road has now been charged with DUI and was from Mexico driving his girlfriend's car. I bet there was not a penny's insurance on the guy that ran into them. Can you imaging how stupid someone would have to be to pass that many motorcycles at one time and i bet they get him. RandyA -
That's cool Thom and fits you. I bet your bike pulling the scooter behind it will still outrun most 2nd gens. RandyA

Been down that road more than once in my life and it is not fun. I have always managed to get by until something comes along and have always been able to stay in this part of the country. I will be thinking about you buddy and maybe can get over to see you sometime. RandyA

Just had a discussion with my lady on how much I would love to take a trip to Key West. We even talked about trailering the bike down into FL and maybe finding a VR member that would let me leave the car and trailer and ride down from there. This just happened this morning before I left for work. RandyA

What's that sound??
Venturous Randy replied to barend's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
(but the cable has been replaced by the shop last year and I know what a squealing speedo cable sounds like.) But, do you know what a dry bearing in a speedometer sounds like? Ditto on what Jeff said as that was my first thought also. You may be just before the squeal stage that can just about scare the crap out of you when it squeals. RandyA -
Just woundering
Venturous Randy replied to bull463's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It is located above the front cylinders between bottom of the battery box and steering. The best thing to do is just remove the hoses from the ports where they go into the heads below the carbs and put some heavy duty caps and clamps on them. It is easy to do except for one that is hard to get to. I took my YICS off a couple of years ago and wish I had done it sooner. RandyA -
We needed this to kill the mosquitoes. About 28 this morning, but near 70º in a day or so. Can you say that? RandyA

During Linda's and my trip to the Outer Banks during my birthday weekend in late September, we had one of those momentary encounters that made me think. I missed the turn that would have been toward the northern strip of the Outer Banks where Kitty Hawk is located and ended up going up toward Chesapeake Bay, Va. When I realized what had happened, I made a u-turn and came upon a rest area. The interesting thing was one side of the rest area was the highway and on the other side was a canal with a dock. When we pulled in, I noticed there was a sail boat docked there that was probably between 35 to 40 feet long. A real nice boat. The couple on the boat was waiting for a lock or something to open and had several hours to kill. I went in to use the rest room and Linda, being the friendly person she is, had walked over and struck up a conversation with the couple and was admiring their boat. They were both very friendly and seemed to appreciate having someone to talk to during their wait. The wife was more of the quiet type and the husband was more the type A personality. After we got back on the bike and back on the highway, Linda mentioned that while the husband was showing me the boat, the wife had moved closer to her and in a low voice, mentioned that she used to ride. It was like she did not want her husband to hear her say this. Now, this made Linda and me both wonder what this was all about and was this with a previous marriage, or boy friend or what, but Linda felt like it must have been something she had enjoyed doing with the way she said it. It also made me wonder if the woman would have rather been on the back of, or even driving a motorcycle, than to be confined to that sailboat. RandyA
