For those of you that are doing some major repairs on your 83, such as transmission repairs or whatever, I suggest you think about doing what I did as a frame repair, even though you have not experienced a frame breakage as I did 4 1/2 years and probably 35,000 miles ago. Even though I don't feel it is a common problem of frame breakage, I do feel that if you are serious about keeping your bike on the road and having the structural integrity it needs, this is something I think you should seriously consider. Considering a 1983 venture with sidecar this week
Venturous Randy replied to Firebrick's topic in Watering Hole
Actually, I suspect frame breakage is pretty rare. I have noted a post I did about four years ago and I have put about 35,000 miles on my bike since I had my problem. As you can see, it is not something you can run by the welding shop and in 15 minutes you are on your way. To be done right, I think the bike needs to be turned upside down or at least laid over on it's side and that would only be if you were having rods welded in like I did and the frame was still in it's original place. Also, as you can see, my bike did not break from being rusted. I believe my problem was from spinning the bike around while on the centerstand and some less than adaquate welds from the factory. I still spin the bike around with it on the centerstand, but now I have a steel wheel mounted on one of the feet and it works very good on smooth concrete. Thanks Margret for the update. I was wondering how you were doing. I talked to Arthur and he told me yesterday he thought you were mostly just going to get rain, but it looks like you got more than that. We got about four inches here as most of it went south of us. RandyA

Brad, I wish you and Lonna the best and feel personally blessed to have met the two of you. You have been a true inspiration for many of us. RandyA

Thanks Lew and I hope to see you and Charlene this coming year as I believe this is the first year since Vogal One I have not seen you. Hope you two have a great Christmas and New Year. RandyA

I have been part of Venturerider since right before Vogal One as I was so fortunate to run into Don and Susan Harrell down in Birmingham, AL. I was part of another site that was just not working out for me and am very happy to be part of this one. The tone of caring and helpfulness on this site is nothing less than remarkable. With what I was going thru this time last year and how far I have come to this point, there is no doubt in my mind that my several times a day dose of this crazy bunch has been a big part of my success and I will never forget it. Thanks to everyone and I hope next year will be a great New Year to everyone. RandyA

Replacing Oil Pan on 86 VR
Venturous Randy replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You need to get yourself in the frame of mind that if repairs are needed, do it yourself or get help from friends like us. Very few shops will want to touch these bikes. You will be surprised at how many on here will be glad to help, especially in helping you do things. RandyA -
Woman killed from debris from pothole
Venturous Randy replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
For some reason, people think that a mattress and box spring set will stay in the back of a truck without being secured. A couple of years ago we had a death locally from a mattress and about two years ago my ex was coming back from Alabama and hit a box springs in the middle of the interstate that done a bunch of damage to her Maxima. That was a wonderful video to watch as I am sitting here at work eating lunch counting the minutes to get out of here. I am really getting to the point of suffering from PMS and I know that now the days are getting longer and spring will get here one of these days. RandyA

If you go the Blue Ridge Parkway in the spring, keep in mind that the crest of the mountains run a bit behind the valley. You will have trees budding out in late May that will bud out in April in the valleys. If you have never spent any time on the BRP, it is one of the greatest motorcycle rides around, especially if you take the time to get to see the local areas. RandyA

Less than three months ago I was divorced after 41 years. We all make mistakes and sometimes try to make things work that were not ment to be. This great family was very important to me and I will never forget them. I have also been fortunate to have met a very special person and look forward to the future. Hang in there and be positive, you may be surprised some day as to how good life can be. RandyA

This is something I don't think we think a lot about, having debris thrown into us off the road from another vehicle. This is one of those random tragic events of life. RandyA http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/12/20/alabama-mother-killed-pothole/?test=latestnews

Water pouring out of the bottom of motor
Venturous Randy replied to bnice273's topic in Watering Hole
My first question is did you have adaquate anti-freeze in it? Not sure about the 2nd gens, but most engines have a freeze plug if it does not freeze too solid to do damage. Do you have any idea where the leak is coming from? RandyA -
By blocking off the anti-dives, would that not be like having the anti-dives engaged all the time as far as how the suspension works? I have thought about doing that, but I am afraid it would make the suspension too stiff. RandyA

Did you see the 1st gen over in Richmond that had an opening bid of $99 and was suposedly complete less motormount bolts? There was not a single bid on it and it was said to have only about 13,000 miles on it. RandyA

I do believe I would take it all apart and sell every piece if I could get the prices being noted on ebay. I would then buy me another 1st gen, a 2nd gen and pay my house off. I have never sold anything on ebay, so I don't know the particulars, but does it cost anything to list something if it does not sell? I am seeing things like $164 for one mirror off an 87, and we aren't even talking new here. I am also seeing many parts that most just throw or give away because there is so little need for them with outragous prices on them. Normally, when I am surfing Venture parts on ebay, I always go "auction only" and "ending soon". Usually this sorts out most of this stuff, but being bored at lunch here at work and looking at all catagories, I am astounded at what people think they have. And, if thay are not asking rediculously high prices up front, they are wanting extremely high shipping costs. OK, I will quit venting as I did get a TCI last week for an 84/90 1st gen for $16.50 and about $6 shipping. RandyA

Weepy Water Pump

That's a great response Earl! RandyA -
One of the things I plan on in the future, given that my divorce is over with and I have a four bedroom house, is to offer my home as a stopover for those traveling. I did this a couple of months ago to Slywoody and his wife Katrina, who I had only met at Asheville, and we had a ball. I do have a ways to go on getting some good bedroom suits, but it is in my plans. Most of the furniture I had is now in a storage building down in Birmingham, AL, but that's ok with me. I'm doing just fine! RandyA Oh, and this is a PRIME riding area as I am about an hour from the Blue Ridge Parkway and great riding in about every direction.

Don, your local weather banner says it is 10º in Oberlin and it is 7º here in east Tennessee. We are about 20+ degrees below normal. Best to you. RandyA

I will be surprised if you are able to get the headlight back in place. I would try to mount it before putting any fairings on. RandyA

Ken, those were good cameras, but in today's world, they make a good paperweight. You might be able to post it on a local swap & shop, but unless you have someone specifically looking for a film type camera, it won't sell for much. The first thing you need to do it to remove the battery cover and make sure the battery is not corroded. If that area is corroded and eat up, there is not much you can do. That series of camera dates back to 1966. I have a Canon AE1 and I really do enjoy the varity of pictures I can take as compared to my Nikon L110 digital. RandyA
