  1. I suspect that the slipping comment referring to 2nd gear actually is the worn thrust washer problem. It was noted as occurring in 2nd gear at WOT when a clutch problem would be occurring more in the higher gears. I suspect what is happening is 2nd gear is jumping and staying in gear and not actually going to a neutral condition. There is an 87 transmission on ebay with 23 hours left that is at $9.99 with no bids. If you are going to fix the transmission, this is the best and cheapest way to do it. Shifting forks are also listed for $9.99 and I suggest getting them also. 2. Well, I missed it. That was about the time Linda and I left the Chinese Buffet in Boone, NC and was getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a beautiful ride. RandyA
  3. Dear Diary, Just moved to Texas! Now this is a state that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here. June 14th: Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper. June 30th: Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here. July 10th: The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected. July 15th: Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this. July 20th: I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and $hits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again. July 25th: The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts. July 30th: Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here? Aug. 4th: Its 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state. Aug. 8th: If another wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!! Aug. 9th: Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my ass was on fire. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat. Aug 10th: The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do •••• for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn state? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat. Aug. 14th: Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Texas . What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.
  4. Yep, with you having an 83, about everything needs greased and Skydoc covered it. One suggestion, in your information it really does help if your bike year is noted. As in the drive shaft requirements, there is a difference in an 83 and an 86-up. RandyA
  5. Running on one cylinder? Wow, I have seen them run on two, but not one. Yep, once you get the bugs worked out, you are going to find the bike almost scary fast up to about 8,000 rpm's. I suspect you not only have electrical problems but carb problems, especially plugged pilot jets. Just keep us posted on your findings and you will get lots of help. Also, with carbs messed up the bike may run a lot hotter. RandyA
  6. Neat-o Dingy, you done us proud!!! Glad to see you out on that thing. RandyAS
  7. Wow, that brought back memories from my US Air Force tech school even though the "R" and "O" were a little different. RandyA
  8. Craig, Is the crankshaft actually rotating when you hit the start button? RandyA
  9. It may be the angle, but the trailer looks bigger than your Venture. RandyA
  10. I looked at downloading some of these programs and it appears that none of them are free. In each case, when I looked at downloading one, I had to buy something else first. Ok, so much for free. Any other suggestions? Thanks, RandyA
  11. Stuart, not to be unfriendly, but I think you are making the right decision in not buying an older bike. There are some people, and I have known them personally, that just don't need to be on a bike like this. First of all, they will never enjoy it and will never trust it. I personally have had my 83 for almost 16 years and I have put over 125,000 miles on it and I love it. My son just got an 86 and we are currently working the bugs out of it and it too is going to be a great bike. We wish you well and you are welcome to stop in any time. RandyA
  12. Lee, I looked at your location and unfortunately you are on the wrong end of the state for me. When you cleaned the carbs, did you take off the little manifold that has the rubber plugs in the bottom of it? Inside where the plugs are is where the pilot jets are and if you did not get them cleaned out, the bike will run terrible. You may need a smaill piece of wire to clean them out. RandyA
  13. When I put Progressive springs in my 83, I used zero preload spacers. On mine, the springs were about even with the top of the tubes and had to be compressed slightly to screw the caps in. I run zero air in the front and so far all my bottoming out has been eliminated. It still raised the bike some in the front and I would not want it any taller. I also found that clear scotch tape worked good on the ring grooves to not chip the seals. RandyA
  14. One thing that also needs to be mentioned is when you get it running good, they can almost be scary fast. These things ran the quarter mile in the mid 12's and many of them still run about that good. In fact, there have been some ride around on three cylinders and not even realize it. When you get it running good, don't worry about running up to the redline. These motors seem to love it a lot better than being lugged around. RandyA
  15. Yep, I kinda liked my cool ride last Sunday when I rode up to about 6,200 feet and this was in the afternoon. But, it was a little warmer when we came down. This is what I like about the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. RandyA
  16. Hey Dan, I know the frustration. For sure, you need to check it in the morning and see how it looks. RandyA
  17. Yep, green is pretty natural around here. But, due to the heat and humidity we have been having, it is a little more hazy than normal, but this is also why this area is called the Smokey Mountains range. We did have some fog roll in on the morning the picture was taken of the camper. RandyA
  18. I called this up and it is $24.95. I know this stuff costs, but was checking free stuff first. RandyA
  19. My Compaq Presario lap top has gotten real slow. I did the disc cleanup and defragged and restored to an earlier point and it is still slow. I went on to cccleaner and did a scan and it did the usual 3,000+ problems found and it said it had a free download. But when I installed it to do the scan and it found problems, it requires me to purchase to do the fix. Is the free download just for the scan? Any other suggestions? RandyA
  20. You poor thing, but you are really doing good on your new to you place. RandyA
  21. Well, with this heat, Linda and I again took off to the mountains. With some great curvy back roads thru NC and TN, we ended up on Roan Mountain and the low temperature we saw was 64 degrees. We did a little hiking out to the point to walk off some of the great meal she treated me to at Western Sizzling in Burnsville, NC. I took a picture after I parked the bike and it was 66 degrees. We did encounter a hard rain for a few minutes while we were eating, but it was no big deal, but it did keep us grazing at the buffet longer. RandyA
  22. One thing I forgot to mention, on Thursday night a little before dark as I was taking a shower and when I came back to the camper, Linda was standing beside it. She then proceeded to tell me that while she was sitting in one of the cloth chairs beside the picnic table, she heard a noise and a bear about two feet long was about ten feet from her trying to get into a plastic bag she had hung on the bushes. It scared her and when she jumped up it took off. She asked me what I would have done and I said I wasn't scared as long as I could run faster than she could. Mark, I wish we could have met up with you. RandyA
  23. Hey rooster, ya couldn't by any chance let me in on what the Lotto numbers are going to be, can ya? RandyA
  24. If anyone is wondering about all the joke comments, this was originally posted in the Joke section. RandyA
  25. With the miserable hot weather we have been having, Linda and I decided to load up the little camper and take off to the mountains. We ended up staying at Mt Pisgah Campground, which is about 5,000 feet up and about 25 miles south of Asheville, NC. The temps on that part of the parkway were about 75 degrees and Thursday morning temperature was 58 degrees. We did get into some heat when we went down to Brevard and ate on Thursday evening and again when going to Cherokee, NC yesterday. We had a little rain shower in Cherokee and it cooled off then we headed back up the mountain. We are supposed to have rain tonight and tomorrow and being up there with it being cool and wet was enough for us to come back to Johnson City for the weekend and maybe we will go somewhere again Monday if we can find someplace cool. The only downer was two couples that came in Thursday night and set up their tents next to us and they were loud and about every sentence had the F word and the women were worse then the guys. As we were packing up to leave this morning, I mentioned it to one of the maintenance men picking up trash and within about five minutes one of the Rangers were giving them a little visit. There were several families close by that had small kids that were easily within hearing them. I am always a little anxious pulling the camper as it weighs about 450 pounds loaded. The bike pulls it fine, even up the mountains, but slowing it down quickly would not be fun. Fortunately, everything went good. RandyA
