  1. Prayers sent from east Tennessee. We do appreciate the updates as this has been very saddening and has been very much in our thoughts. Randy & Linda
  2. Good for you Jeff. I wonder if he had one of the cables not slide back up into the housing where the cables come together under the fairing. That almost always happens to me when I am trying to put carbs back on, RandyA
  3. You may want to add about 10 more pounds to the rear and see how that does. Good luck on your ride getting your wife on with you. I know how much my lady friend adds to my rides. RandyA
  4. Linda and I are having a discussion about pulling the little camper down to the Franklin, NC area for Monday and Tuesday and then to Vogal for Wednesday and Thursday night. Linda has to be home Friday evening so we would be leaving out Friday morning. At this time we have not tried to reserve a campsite so we don't even know what is available. So, if anyone was interested in sharing a site for Wednesday and Thursday night, I may be very interested. RandyA
  5. Wow, I was 53 a long time ago. Happy birthday Oldgoat!!! RandyA
  6. A needed up grade is # 4 wires from battery. That helped my hot starting issues several years ago. RandyA
  7. The reason I suggested buying the forks also is because if the transmission is jumping in 2nd gear, usually the fork is bent some too. This guy may also combine parts and save on shipping. There is 3 hours left at this time. RandyA
  8. I suspect that the slipping comment referring to 2nd gear actually is the worn thrust washer problem. It was noted as occurring in 2nd gear at WOT when a clutch problem would be occurring more in the higher gears. I suspect what is happening is 2nd gear is jumping and staying in gear and not actually going to a neutral condition. There is an 87 transmission on ebay with 23 hours left that is at $9.99 with no bids. If you are going to fix the transmission, this is the best and cheapest way to do it. Shifting forks are also listed for $9.99 and I suggest getting them also. 9. Well, I missed it. That was about the time Linda and I left the Chinese Buffet in Boone, NC and was getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a beautiful ride. RandyA
  10. Dear Diary, Just moved to Texas! Now this is a state that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here. June 14th: Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper. June 30th: Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here. July 10th: The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected. July 15th: Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this. July 20th: I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and $hits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again. July 25th: The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts. July 30th: Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here? Aug. 4th: Its 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state. Aug. 8th: If another wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!! Aug. 9th: Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my ass was on fire. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat. Aug 10th: The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do •••• for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn state? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat. Aug. 14th: Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Texas . What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.
  11. Yep, with you having an 83, about everything needs greased and Skydoc covered it. One suggestion, in your information it really does help if your bike year is noted. As in the drive shaft requirements, there is a difference in an 83 and an 86-up. RandyA
  12. Running on one cylinder? Wow, I have seen them run on two, but not one. Yep, once you get the bugs worked out, you are going to find the bike almost scary fast up to about 8,000 rpm's. I suspect you not only have electrical problems but carb problems, especially plugged pilot jets. Just keep us posted on your findings and you will get lots of help. Also, with carbs messed up the bike may run a lot hotter. RandyA
  13. Neat-o Dingy, you done us proud!!! Glad to see you out on that thing. RandyAS
  14. Wow, that brought back memories from my US Air Force tech school even though the "R" and "O" were a little different. RandyA
  15. Craig, Is the crankshaft actually rotating when you hit the start button? RandyA
  16. It may be the angle, but the trailer looks bigger than your Venture. RandyA
  17. I looked at downloading some of these programs and it appears that none of them are free. In each case, when I looked at downloading one, I had to buy something else first. Ok, so much for free. Any other suggestions? Thanks, RandyA
  18. Stuart, not to be unfriendly, but I think you are making the right decision in not buying an older bike. There are some people, and I have known them personally, that just don't need to be on a bike like this. First of all, they will never enjoy it and will never trust it. I personally have had my 83 for almost 16 years and I have put over 125,000 miles on it and I love it. My son just got an 86 and we are currently working the bugs out of it and it too is going to be a great bike. We wish you well and you are welcome to stop in any time. RandyA
  19. Lee, I looked at your location and unfortunately you are on the wrong end of the state for me. When you cleaned the carbs, did you take off the little manifold that has the rubber plugs in the bottom of it? Inside where the plugs are is where the pilot jets are and if you did not get them cleaned out, the bike will run terrible. You may need a smaill piece of wire to clean them out. RandyA
  20. When I put Progressive springs in my 83, I used zero preload spacers. On mine, the springs were about even with the top of the tubes and had to be compressed slightly to screw the caps in. I run zero air in the front and so far all my bottoming out has been eliminated. It still raised the bike some in the front and I would not want it any taller. I also found that clear scotch tape worked good on the ring grooves to not chip the seals. RandyA
  21. One thing that also needs to be mentioned is when you get it running good, they can almost be scary fast. These things ran the quarter mile in the mid 12's and many of them still run about that good. In fact, there have been some ride around on three cylinders and not even realize it. When you get it running good, don't worry about running up to the redline. These motors seem to love it a lot better than being lugged around. RandyA
  22. Yep, I kinda liked my cool ride last Sunday when I rode up to about 6,200 feet and this was in the afternoon. But, it was a little warmer when we came down. This is what I like about the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. RandyA
  23. Hey Dan, I know the frustration. For sure, you need to check it in the morning and see how it looks. RandyA
  24. Yep, green is pretty natural around here. But, due to the heat and humidity we have been having, it is a little more hazy than normal, but this is also why this area is called the Smokey Mountains range. We did have some fog roll in on the morning the picture was taken of the camper. RandyA
  25. I called this up and it is $24.95. I know this stuff costs, but was checking free stuff first. RandyA
