  1. Another nice place to stay in that area, even though it is a little more east is Franklin, NC. We stayed at the Franklin Inn, a mom and pop type motel where you parked in front of your room. The staff were very frindly and helpful and we found a great restaurant called the Sunset. RandyA
  2. I had a follow up with my eye doctor today and he is saying everything looks good. Other than a little stinging the first day, I have not had any pain, so I have a bottle of Loratab I don't need. At this point, I can only see images of bright light, but the doctor is still telling me that the bubble in my eye is what is affecting my vision. So, I guess for now it is just a waiting game so see what I am going to end up with. RandyA
  3. Moved
  4. I was watching to see if anyone mentioned this. Due to it being thinner, I found that Scotch tape works good also and is tough enough for the seals to slide over without damaging the seal. It really is important to use some type of tape as the ring groove will definitely damage the sealing edge of the seal. RandyA
  5. A1C is the long term sugar test that shows what your sugar has averaged over a three month period of time. This one you can not fake by eating real good for a couple of days before you go to the doctor. It does concern me that you are being treated for diabetes and your doctor has not tested for A1C. I do appreciate the comments as this is why I started this post. I know there are a lot on here that are in the same boat and if I can do anything to get someones attention to help address their diabetes problem, it is worth it. RandyA
  6. I used to be on Actos for a while and was taken off it. I am now seeing Actos as one of the drugs that is ending up on the bad drug list with a lot of lawsuits. RandyA
  7. My bike has it's own turntable. I have a steel wheel mounted to the side of the center stand. RandyA
  8. I want to thank everyone for my birthday wishes. Last year Linda and I were down on the Outer Banks of eastern NC having a wonderful time with some great venturerider friends. I hope to maybe do that again next year. RandyA
  9. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 35 years ago and quite honestly did a poor job of controlling it. I took the pills prescribed, but my eating habits were terrible and was about 80 pounds overweight. I eventually ended up on insulin, but that did not help as my A1C numbers were from high 9's to about 11. When it became obvious that I was going to be dealing with a divorce after a 41 year marriage, I started getting serious about myself. I ended up loosing about 50 pounds and went off insulin and my last two A1C numbers were 6.7 and 6.4 which are very good. But, the problem with diabetes and poor control of it is damage done over the years just don't go away whenever you decide to do better. So, I am sitting here right now trying to type with one eye and hoping I will get some good vision out of the eye when it heals up. The hemorrhage I had was as bad or worse than any of the examples shown on the website about these things. About two years ago I was really happy with the results from my cataract surgery. Now I am being told that I have a lot of damage in both eyes and it will get worse. The reason I am writing this is I know I am not the only one in this bunch with type 2 diabetes and I hope some of you will start taking diabetes a lot more serious than I did, so maybe you can keep some of the damage to a minimum. It is a beautiful day outside and to be almost 80 degrees and I would love to be going for a ride. RandyA
  10. Glad you got to do the trip and yes, that part of the Parkway is really beautiful, especially if you can see it. Back in July, Linda and I camped across the road from the Inn and it was great. I really wish we had met up with you rather than the short ride we did. Maybe I would not have laid the bike down and then have the Vitreous hemorrhage in my right eye that was probably related to me picking the bike back up. Glad you made it back home and if you want to try this again in the future, please let me know and I will see, I hope, what I can do. RandyA
  11. And I bet this did not make you feel any better! RandyA
  12. If that does not help, take the line loose at the master and while using your finger as a check valve over the outlet, pump the lever. Once you get fluid pumping, hook it all back up and it may bleed. JUST MAKE SURE ALL PLASTIC IS COVERED WELL TO NOT GET FLUID ON ANYTHING. RandyA
  13. Next day follow up after surgery looked good according to the eye doctor. I was really concerned because earlier in the morning, I got sick and had some pretty severe heaves. Right now, about the only thing I can see from my right eye is some light, if it is bright. My depth perception is really screwed up. RandyA
  14. Well, I am home. From the doctors description, it sounds pretty serious. There was a lot of scarring and lazer work to fix some blood vessels. He did put the bubble in and I also had some retina separation. I am now starting to ache and Linda has gone to get the pain meds filled. If she wasn't gone, she would probably not let me be sitting here trying to type this. She is a real keeper. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. RandyA
  15. In looking at the pictures from inside my eye and the examples given when I looked up vitreous hemorrhage, mine looks as bad or worse than the worst example given. At least 1/3 or more of my eye is shrouded in blood. Well, we are off to see the wizard. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. RandyA
  16. Thank you very much Brian for the information you have provided me, both here and your phone call. This is really what the Venturerider family is all about. RandyA
  17. I was at the eye clinic at the VA at 7:30 this morning and they were able to work me in pretty quick. After a lot of very bright lights shining in both eyes, they sent me to our main civilian eye hospital. This was for a review with an eye surgeon. After another round of being dilated again and a lot more bright lights, the determination is a big time ruptured blood vessel. It is so bad that the doctor has me set up for surgery at 9am tomorrow. This will consist of having the gel taken out of my eye and the leaking blood vessel hopefully fixed. Then, a bubble will be put into the eye to give it the correct shape. The vision I end up with could range from one end to the other, but probably not as good as it was. So this is just another one of the things I am having to deal with after loosing my job at the end of June. Well, anyway, Sunday is my 61th birthday. Getting old ain't exactly being the golden years so far. RandyA
  18. I just got home from the VA eye clinic. I have a 1:00 appointment at the retina center, which is our local eye hospital. So far it looks like a vitreous hemorrhage and some blood around the retina, but not a detached retina. I will know more this afternoon as right now there is too much blood in my eye for them to see everything. RandyA
  19. As I noted in my post on Rick,s "Rookie Mistake" thread, yesterday while going very slow and coming to a stop while encountering some very fine gravel, I slid the front tire and went down. Fortunately, other than busting up my left fairing, we were able to get up and go on. It now appears I may have encountered a delayed injury. About 4:30 today my right eye went very blurry and I am also seeing areas of red. I went to the local VA because I was not sure if I had had a light stroke or what. At the moment I either may have a detached retina or a Vitreous Hemorrhage. The big question I got was have I done anything to exert myself and I said yep, yesterday I picked up an 800 pound motorcycle that I dropped. So, I am to be at the eye clinic at the VA first thing in the morning for an evaluation. RandyA
  20. Glad you all made it home ok and glad Linda and I could be a small part of your trip. Nice memories. RandyA
  21. I had my rookie mistake also yesterday and it was also related to the front brake. Linda and I took about a 60 mile ride and one of the roads we will occasionally ride is the original roadbed of the Tweetsie Railroad here in east Tennessee. We had been down most of it before and it is a really neat slow ride with most of it being a narrow one lane paved road with some narrow cuts through rocks. Where I got in trouble was there was a section we had never tried before because I did not think it was open. Well after a mile or so, it did come to a house and at that point the road went to gravel. As I was coming up to that point, just barely moving, I was picking a good place to make a u-turn. Just as I was just about stopped, using the front brake as I had my feet down, I came upon some very fine gravel. Yep, before I realized it, my front tire slid and instead of letting off the brake, I guess I squeezed it harder. There was a slight slope to the right so before I could save it, we were over to the left. Fortunately, neither one of us got any injuries, but my left fairing took a beating. I was real glad we did not get hurt, but I was real mad at myself for that moment of inattention that got my fairing busted. RandyA
  22. If they want to pick on your 1300 for being small, tell them to pick on a smaller 1200 Venture. My encounter with one of the Big Dog type Harleys a while back will make him think twice before he picks on a 1200 touring bike again. RandyA
  23. Wow Dan, what a way to spend a trip almost to the beach. You both will be in our thoughts and prayers. RandyA
  24. I would love to meet up with you Sunday for dinner, but it may be a bit cool riding back across the mountain at night. Linda and I may be available Monday if you would like to have a riding companion. RandyA
  25. I would have rather your wife taken the camera with her to the beach and brought back some interesting pictures. RandyA
