My rookie mistake may be more serious
Venturous Randy replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
I was at the eye clinic at the VA at 7:30 this morning and they were able to work me in pretty quick. After a lot of very bright lights shining in both eyes, they sent me to our main civilian eye hospital. This was for a review with an eye surgeon. After another round of being dilated again and a lot more bright lights, the determination is a big time ruptured blood vessel. It is so bad that the doctor has me set up for surgery at 9am tomorrow. This will consist of having the gel taken out of my eye and the leaking blood vessel hopefully fixed. Then, a bubble will be put into the eye to give it the correct shape. The vision I end up with could range from one end to the other, but probably not as good as it was. So this is just another one of the things I am having to deal with after loosing my job at the end of June. Well, anyway, Sunday is my 61th birthday. Getting old ain't exactly being the golden years so far. RandyA -
My rookie mistake may be more serious
Venturous Randy replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
I just got home from the VA eye clinic. I have a 1:00 appointment at the retina center, which is our local eye hospital. So far it looks like a vitreous hemorrhage and some blood around the retina, but not a detached retina. I will know more this afternoon as right now there is too much blood in my eye for them to see everything. RandyA -
As I noted in my post on Rick,s "Rookie Mistake" thread, yesterday while going very slow and coming to a stop while encountering some very fine gravel, I slid the front tire and went down. Fortunately, other than busting up my left fairing, we were able to get up and go on. It now appears I may have encountered a delayed injury. About 4:30 today my right eye went very blurry and I am also seeing areas of red. I went to the local VA because I was not sure if I had had a light stroke or what. At the moment I either may have a detached retina or a Vitreous Hemorrhage. The big question I got was have I done anything to exert myself and I said yep, yesterday I picked up an 800 pound motorcycle that I dropped. So, I am to be at the eye clinic at the VA first thing in the morning for an evaluation. RandyA

I had my rookie mistake also yesterday and it was also related to the front brake. Linda and I took about a 60 mile ride and one of the roads we will occasionally ride is the original roadbed of the Tweetsie Railroad here in east Tennessee. We had been down most of it before and it is a really neat slow ride with most of it being a narrow one lane paved road with some narrow cuts through rocks. Where I got in trouble was there was a section we had never tried before because I did not think it was open. Well after a mile or so, it did come to a house and at that point the road went to gravel. As I was coming up to that point, just barely moving, I was picking a good place to make a u-turn. Just as I was just about stopped, using the front brake as I had my feet down, I came upon some very fine gravel. Yep, before I realized it, my front tire slid and instead of letting off the brake, I guess I squeezed it harder. There was a slight slope to the right so before I could save it, we were over to the left. Fortunately, neither one of us got any injuries, but my left fairing took a beating. I was real glad we did not get hurt, but I was real mad at myself for that moment of inattention that got my fairing busted. RandyA

If they want to pick on your 1300 for being small, tell them to pick on a smaller 1200 Venture. My encounter with one of the Big Dog type Harleys a while back will make him think twice before he picks on a 1200 touring bike again. RandyA

Wow Dan, what a way to spend a trip almost to the beach. You both will be in our thoughts and prayers. RandyA

I would love to meet up with you Sunday for dinner, but it may be a bit cool riding back across the mountain at night. Linda and I may be available Monday if you would like to have a riding companion. RandyA

I would have rather your wife taken the camera with her to the beach and brought back some interesting pictures. RandyA

2nd Gear Kit
Venturous Randy replied to gaillarry's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe the best way to do it, and a lot cheaper, is get a complete trans out of an 86/93 Venture. They come up on EBAY occasionally. Before you order, give me a call. RandyA -
My 83 had about 23,000 miles when I bought it 15 1/2 years ago. Monday it turned over 150,000 miles and it is still running great. RandyA

If you can let me know when you are going to be available, maybe we can get together one day for a meal or something. If you had let me know you were coming this way, you could have saved some motel expense. Make sure you have my cell if you need anything. RandyA

Brake caliper froze

That is what the edit and advenced edit buttons are for. Even when I try, I still have to correct some of my words after I have posted. RandyA -
Installing progressives
Venturous Randy replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I put Progressives in my 83, the springs came to about even with the top, so when I put the caps in, that is all the preload I had. It worked perfect for me as it did raise the front a little and never bottoms out. I would not want the front raised any more. RandyA- 8 replies

First of all, welcome to our little family. Second, welcome to east Tennessee. Given we are now past Labor Day, I would do a search in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area and make some phone calls. You may be able to get some good deals and during the week there are many motels that have rooms in the $30 range. If, when you put some plans together, post them and we may be able to throw together a little meet & eat. RandyA

Cruising RPM
Venturous Randy replied to tz89's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On flat ground, my 83 will pull easily at 1,200 rpm's in 5th. I routinely ride at 30 mph in 5th and if I want to accelerate quicker, I will kick it down a few gears and hang on. In the 127,000 miles I have put on my bike, it has been in the 8,000 rpm range many, many times. My bike has very good acceleration in 5th at 55 mph and really don't understand why someone feels they have to keep it in 4th unless they are doing 70+ mph. RandyA -
Cylinder Temps??
Venturous Randy replied to easternrider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What does it do when you unplug the back sparkplugs when it is running? RandyA -
Good for you Jeff. I know that even if I hit the lottery and bought other bikes, I would still want to keep my 83. Linda and I put 330 miles on it this weekend just putting around and it only lacks 148 miles having 150,000 miles on it and we are talking about taking a ride somewhere tomorrow just to see that. Cruising RPM
Venturous Randy replied to tz89's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Start the bike cold and let it run from 30 to 40 seconds and check the pipes and see if you have a cool one. You can use your finger, but a non contact temperature sensing gage works better, especially on the back cylinders. RandyA -
If you ever ride the Lynn Cove Viaduct, take a few minutes to visit the visitor center there and see the model that was done of the mountain area and the building of the bridge. It really was a remarkable engineering achivement. It wa built from the top down with very little disturbing of the area under the bridge. RandyA

Has anyone noticed that the GEICO motorcycle commercial has a scene that looks exactly like the Lynn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway? For anyone not knowing of the Lynn Cove Viaduct, it was a great engineering achivement in building a bridge around a portion on Grandfather Mountain. RandyA
