1st Gen Engine removal
Venturous Randy replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can easily take the engine out and put it back in by yourself if you do what I did. I have a floor jack that is bigger that one of those that you can pick up and easily throw in the trunk of your car. The piece that swivels on the lift top will come out so there is a hole. Using a spare oil pan, I took two pieces of 2X4 and notched them so that when mounted to a one foot square board, the oil pan nestled snugly. I then put some holes in the outer corners of the board and one in the middle to mount the board to the jack. By placing the setup under the engine and seating the oil pan and then running a couple of narrow tie down straps across the engine and putting the hooks in the holes in the board, you can secure the engine to the jack. With the engine secured, you can wiggle it out and if you have the weight centered good, it is very stable to roll around. One of the small four wheel dollys from Harbor freight is perfect if you are going to turn the engine upside down and do transmission work. It also works good if you set the engine upright. While the engine is out, this is a great time to put in the solid motor mounts. If you contact SGN, Steve Neal, he may have some sets left. It is also a good thing to remove the right side upper fairing because if you don't it does get in the way and tabs can get broken off. It also helps if the rear swing arm is off to pull the engine and especially to put to back in. For sure, you should remove the rear end and drive shaft if you don't remove the swing arm. For those of you doing the 2nd gear repair, while the engine is out, this is a good time to check valve clearances and maybe replace the valve cover gaskets. This is also a good time to remove the TCI to relocate it either on top of the air box, or like I did, on the inside of the left fairing. If you do remove your swing arm, this is a great time to put Zerk fittings in the rear shock/swing arm pivot assembly. Reassembly is just remounting the engine to the board and strapping is down and putting it back in the bike and wiggling everything in place. RandyA -

In about 69 or 70 I was stationed in in the USAF in eastern North Carolina during an eclipse. I will never forget being in Wilbur's BBQ parking lot in Goldsboro. It was really neat and there were people from many parts of the world there. It really was a strange experience. I would like to see one again. RandyA

Couple questions
Venturous Randy replied to Rosie1965's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
First of all Rosie, welcome to our little group and we hope you join, It will be the best $12 you will ever spend. Second, it helps to get answers when people know what bike you are talking about. After looking at your profile, it looks like you have a 1990 Venture listed. There is a program on how to add that to your name at the top of the page. If you are getting flow through your radiator, it may not be a defective thermostat. Below your radiator, there is a hex head valve control that is a bypass on your cooling system. The easiest way for me to describe the closed position is the top of the letters on the face of the valve should be pointing toward the 5 O'Clock position. Otherwise, it will bypass the thermostat. Yep, that's how I took care of my phone. RandyA

Well, since this is the off year for Vogal here in the south east, I think we need to see what interest we may have in having another Asheville Rally. What I have done in the past is throw out the opportunity for everyone to let me know what interest there is and what dates people would like to suggest. Once we start getting this information, we can start putting something together. For those of you that have never been to the Asheville get together, it is really more like an extended meet and eat. It is very laid back and we have a great time. It is not real organized and so far that has worked real good. In the past we have stayed at the Asheville East KOA campground and have always been able to have the main congregation at the lilly pond. This is a great place in the campground as is is a bit off to itself and is also within walking distance to the cabins. There is not a registration fee and your costs are what you spend just having fun. We have always been able to double up on the campsites and this helps. We have in the past had about six or so campsites together and with these sites being large, we just kind of fill it up. For those that do not want to camp, there are nice cabins and a lot of motels close by. And, if you want any door prises, you will have to bring your own. As far as rides and meals, the opportunities in this area are abundant. You could spend a month in this area and still find great roads to ride and places to eat. We put together rides by asking "Who wants to ride where?" and go from there. Some may want to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway down to Cherokee, NC, which is the most majestic part of the parkway for running the crest of the mountains and is also the highest elevation on the parkway. Some may want to go to Grandfather Mountain or Chimney Rock. Some may want to go to the Biltmore house. Google these places if you don't know about them. As far as food, in the past we have gathered most at a particular BBQ restaurant on one evening and usually breakfast is fixed at the campground. We will make a run to the store for food and folks will chip in a couple of bucks. We usually have pancakes and bacon and sausage. To my knowledge, no one has ever left hungry. As far as dates, the times could probably be from June to September. We will just have to see how it would work best for the most people. Just respond with your thoughts and suggestions and we will see what can be put together. RandyA

In June 64 when 13, I got a new 125 Ducati Bronco. In Jan 73, when getting out of USAF, I bought a 250 Yamaha Enduro and kept about 8 months. In 95, after coming back from the Bahamas where I rode a scooter for two days, I bought a Yamaha 850 Tripple Special with the hard bags and fairing. I think it may have been in the "Ventura" family. In 96 I got my 83 Venture with 23,000 miles and now it has 150,595 miles. RandyA

Front Fork Separation..

Just make sure you wrap the groove on the tube with something like scotch tape to not damage the seal when you slide them over the tube. RandyA -
Just wondering about some of these profile pictures ???
Venturous Randy replied to FuzzyRSTD's topic in Watering Hole
My avatar picture was taken after I painted my bike and had the bikini side panels put on. I liked the picture as it emphasized the "V" of the engine. My profile picture was taken one evening while I was waiting on my grand daughter. Someone saw the picture after I had posted it here and submitted it to the Calender committee. I was contacted and asked for a digital copy and the picture ended up being the January bike. RandyA -
At this moment I have no idea what I will be doing. I do hope we can have a get together since this is an off year for Vogal. Would you be interested in putting something together in Asheville? RandyA

You could probably loosen the clamp bolts on the fork tubes and twist it a little. RandyA

Welcome to this crazy group. You might confuse them here with us both being from NE TN and your name. Yes, there is no doubt that we are blessed with many great roads to ride in this area. RandyA

I suspect Fuzzy may have been referencing avatar pictures. RandyA -
I think the real story here is how much junk we get from China. They already own us. I was in Auto Zone the other day and had a hard time finding anything on the shelf that was not made in China. I even saw that the salmon that is being sold at Walmart comes from China. RandyA

1985 Venture with 61k
Venturous Randy replied to sgilbert14's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have an 85 that has about 57,000 miles on that I need to sell. It is serial number 5200 or so and the trans is not an issue. I have the plastic off of it as my son and I were working on the carbs and TCI. I have another TCI, but I need to get the diodes replaced and I already have them. I just don't want to try to do them now with just one eye. RandyA -
Putting an oil pressure gauge on your bike would probably worry you more than make you feel good, especially at idle. The icon you see referring to oil is an oil level indicator, not an oil pressure indicator. These bikes usually don't use much oil and as you know already, you look at the glass. The best range is at the mid point down to the lower mark. If you fill to the upper level, you get oil being blown into your air box. Also, when you check the oil level, make sure the bike is setting level, as sitting on the center stand. It looks like you have your hands full, but when you get it done, you will have a great bike. Yep, I agree with your original post. There are a lot of people that are not in as good of shape as they thought they would be at this point in their life. I know that I can identify with that. Some are really struggling. RandyA
