We also have a lot of trees budding out. Got a while before winter is over. Biggest snow I ever remember here was in March 93. RandyA

Hey Dan, is there any prize for being the 500th poster on this thread? RandyA

In 1977, while in college, I went to work for a camera repair shop/photography studio and that was my first time being around quality cameras. I ultimately ended up with a Canon AE1 with a bunch of lenses that is now in the basement in the bag. I now have a digital Nikon L110 that is a nice camera, but I feel I have very little control with so many of the things like light control, depth of field, exposure length and other things that made those real special pictures. I know there are digital cameras that address these issues better than mine, but I do miss using my old film camers. RandyA

Heck, I probably still have scars on the back of my ankle from my 125 Ducati kicking back on me and hitting the passenger foot peg. Thanks Mark for bringing back some very old memories. RandyA

Lew, just remember, what Capt Whitlock and all the rest of us have served for, is Liberty. The only way that I can deal with the idiots from Westboro is to accept that with true Liberty, there will be those that use it wrongly for their own agenda. The only reason that this scum is doing this is because this has been the best way for them to get attention for them to get more money from their scum supporters. Yes, in my mind it is absolutely wrong to abuse these freedoms as they have, when they are simply too stupid to know that if it were not for the Capt Whitlocks of this country that gave some or gave all, they would not be able to do this. Last summer, we lost a local soldier and the Westboro group were supposed to be here. With the crazy bunch we have around here, The Westboro scum may have not made it back home alive. They did not show up. RandyA

Dingy, unless I am reading something wrong, my memory tells me that the RSV transmission ratio is slightly lower than the RSTD, especially in 4th and 5th. I do believe that when I was putting together the 2nd gen trans setup for the 1200 engine I have, I double checked the number of teeth on the gearset I bought to make sure it was an RSV version and with the data I had, and it was. I specifically wanted the RSV set because 4th and 5th was not as high geared as the RSTD. Somewhere I have the numbers on each, but at the moment I can not find them. But, my memory is telling me that on the second page (range) of this data that the RSV and RSTD data is backwards. RandyA I just looked at our Venture history and it shows the RSTD to have the .750 5th gear which is what this data is showing the RSV to be. It is my understanding that one of the changes to improve power on the RSV was to lower the ratios, as on the RSTD, 5th gear is only good at higher speeds as it is geared so high.

Motorcycle taillight downshift brakelight activator
Venturous Randy replied to PGunn's topic in Watering Hole
To be sensitive enough to work while down shifting, it would probably stay on a lot when going down a grade, even if brakes were not used to maintain the speed you want. The only way it would be effective is having an additional brake light that also came on when the brakes were used, like the third brake light in a car. I actually have a small LED brake light mounted on my trunk under the rack that comes on and oscillates from one side to the other. RandyA -
I may have one for an 86 if I can find it. It will be a day or so before I will be able to look. RandyA

1st Gen Engine removal
Venturous Randy replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would take a picture, but my son, Lil Venturous, borrowed the set up to pull a transmission in his car and when he took the pieces off the board that the oil pan nested in, he lost one of them. I have not needed to use it again, so I have not made another one. As far as this area, I feel blessed as it is a beautiful area and it is wonderful for riding a motorcycle. We have roads like the "Tail of the Dragon" everywhere. RandyA -
I do have to say that I believe the best handling my bike has ever been was when I had the used Venom on the front and the new E-3 on the back. I believe it handled even a little better than when I replaced the front with an E-3. My bike just did not handle good at 70+ mph with the Venom on the back. RandyA

I just realized this post is over four years old. RandyA -
OK Al, it's time you start getting your moneys worth on the $12 you spent on this web site. To think about spending $780 on getting the head bearings fixed just hurts to think about. I don't know how many miles your bike has on it, but for most of these bikes, the biggest problem with the head bearings is they need a good cleaning and regreasing. Yes, replacing the bearings and races is great and I hope that is what they did, but usually it is just dried grease that makes them feel notchy. I am fortunate that as a kid I was the neighborhood fix-it guy for myself and my friends. This has served me well in being able to maintain my 83 Venture that I have had 16 years and have put about 125,000 miles on since I have had it. If I encounter anything that I am not sure about, I start here with specific questions and to be honest with you, the LAST place I would consider is taking the bike to a dealer. Another thing I would do is start asking around about folks in your area that may be able to help you if you are not sure about doing things. But, at least let us help you if we can. RandyA

1st Gen Engine removal
Venturous Randy replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can easily take the engine out and put it back in by yourself if you do what I did. I have a floor jack that is bigger that one of those that you can pick up and easily throw in the trunk of your car. The piece that swivels on the lift top will come out so there is a hole. Using a spare oil pan, I took two pieces of 2X4 and notched them so that when mounted to a one foot square board, the oil pan nestled snugly. I then put some holes in the outer corners of the board and one in the middle to mount the board to the jack. By placing the setup under the engine and seating the oil pan and then running a couple of narrow tie down straps across the engine and putting the hooks in the holes in the board, you can secure the engine to the jack. With the engine secured, you can wiggle it out and if you have the weight centered good, it is very stable to roll around. One of the small four wheel dollys from Harbor freight is perfect if you are going to turn the engine upside down and do transmission work. It also works good if you set the engine upright. While the engine is out, this is a great time to put in the solid motor mounts. If you contact SGN, Steve Neal, he may have some sets left. It is also a good thing to remove the right side upper fairing because if you don't it does get in the way and tabs can get broken off. It also helps if the rear swing arm is off to pull the engine and especially to put to back in. For sure, you should remove the rear end and drive shaft if you don't remove the swing arm. For those of you doing the 2nd gear repair, while the engine is out, this is a good time to check valve clearances and maybe replace the valve cover gaskets. This is also a good time to remove the TCI to relocate it either on top of the air box, or like I did, on the inside of the left fairing. If you do remove your swing arm, this is a great time to put Zerk fittings in the rear shock/swing arm pivot assembly. Reassembly is just remounting the engine to the board and strapping is down and putting it back in the bike and wiggling everything in place. RandyA -

In about 69 or 70 I was stationed in in the USAF in eastern North Carolina during an eclipse. I will never forget being in Wilbur's BBQ parking lot in Goldsboro. It was really neat and there were people from many parts of the world there. It really was a strange experience. I would like to see one again. RandyA
