I ended up leaving the charger on 2 amps over night and when I looked at it at about noon, it was reading zero charge. I disconnected everything and hit the starter and it cranked over strong. So, I hope any long term damage was not done. The reason I do not have my running lights thru the ignition switch is a couple years ago for some reason I blew the main fuse that everything runs off of. To get home, I had to bypass the fuse and hope nothing shorted out. It didn't and I replaced thru fuse and it has been fine since. But, since then I decided to run the fog lights thru it's own fused circuit with a solenoid because if I ever had the main fuse blow again and it was dark, I would still have lights. Around here there are not a lot of straight roads and loosing all lights at night would not be a good thing. RandyA

It is also an interesting note that Tide was the major sponsor for Darrell Waltrip for awhile and he was one of the commentators. RandyA

A Different Look to my Wing - Waddya Think?

Personally, no matter how neat it looked, I would not do anything to reduce the effectiveness of the headlights. RandyA -
I hope you have a great birthday Don and that you have many more. RandyA

This is one of those "putting 10 pounds of potatos on a 5 pound bag". Basically, there is a very limited amount of space to encompass several different systems. RandyA- 8 replies

It has been charging for about two hours and I just cranked it over and it done fine. I switched down to 2 amps and was planning on charging it all night at that level. I think I heard that an AGM type battery should be charged different than an acid battery. I think I have read on here about an AGM battery being different when using a trickle charger or float charger. I may go out to the garage in a couple of hours and disconnect the charger. I do appreciate the comments. RandyA

When I took a ride the other evening, I accidentally left my running lights on and they are not wired thru the ignition switch on purpose. I have plugged up my battery charger that charges at 6 amps on the high setting and 2 amps on the low. I am currently on the high setting. Is it ok to charge a dead DEKA battery like this? RandyA

Yep, you just joined. This has been going on since they came out with the new and improved? 2nd gens. Don't worry about it as it is all in good fun. RandyA

The reason I wanted to do the swap was with the 2nd gen RSV transmission and the V-Max rear, 1st a 2nd were lower, 3rd and 4th were about the same and 5th was slightly higher. In other words, the spacing on the gear ratios were a little wider. That would give a little better 1st gear acceleration with a slightly higher 5th gear. RandyA

Just waiting on the storms to arrive, and pass

I just had a new roof put on a couple of weeks ago. It is after 10 pm and still 68 degrees. RandyA -
Yeah, I feel the same way. Actually, after putting all the transmission pieces in the 1200 engine, it went together perfect. But, I have yet to put the engine in my bike. I did find out that one of the cylinders had some rust in it and I never did try to pull the head to see if it was a problem. I also never put the V-Max rear end the bike that I have either. RandyA

I thought those were the holes for the oxygen sensors when they were going to put fuel injection on these engines. RandyA

We have been lucky here in north east Tennessee so far, but there is nothing on the four local tv channels but weather. Right now it is north and south both of me and at this time, I am in the window between the storms. This would be a good night not to sleep nekid. RandyA -
Do I have a problem?
Venturous Randy replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On our bikes, each carb linkage is spring loaded against a stop and the stop setting is what you are adjusting when balancing the carbs. There should be no slack in any of the linkage. There is only one carb that has an idle setting and from that point on, each carb is adjusted to load against the linkage from that first carb. The problem with adjusting to a particular RPM is it takes very little throttle to maintain 4,000 RPM's in neutral, but to maintain 4,000 RPM's on flat ground in 5th gear takes a lot more throttle. Wow, that was neat. Thanks for posting it. RandyA

Do I have a problem?
Venturous Randy replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I don't think some people actually realize that all you are doing is measuring vacuum in the chamber between the throttle plate and the valves and comparing the vacuum from one carb to another or to three other carbs. This is because an engine on the intake side is nothing more than a big vacuum pump. By adjusting the amount the throttle plate is open, you are adjusting the amount of vacuum by adjusting the amount of leakage you are allowing around the throttle plate. Given this, if you have even a small vacuum leak, when you are balancing the carbs, you have to adjust for that leak. The more you open the throttle plates, the less that small vacuum leak will effect the amount of vacuum you are reading on your meter for that cylinder. With a small leak, you are having to close the throttle plate to bring that vacuum up to the point it matches the other carbs. As you open the throttle, that small leak will cause the levels on the meter to become uneven compared to the other carbs. If you have a larger leak, you can completely close that throttle plate and the meter may still show you that you do not have enough vacuum, making you think you need to close it even more. Another thing that can have an effect on vacuum reading is having an intake valve that has a small leak. At idle with very little air flow, a small leak can cause a small spit back of air that disrupts flow into the intake manifold and appear to decrease vacuum. As RPM"s increase, that small leak becomes less of a factor as the valves are opening and closing much quicker and there is more air flow going through the manifold which somewhat neutralizes that small spit back. The first thing you need to do is to try to identify any vacuum leaks. I usually spray some starter fluid around the manifolds under each carb and around the YICS system if you have it still hooked up, which I suggest you remove and plug. If you do not detect any leaks, you can adjust each carb to be more balanced in the RPM range that you normally operate, even though theoretically, you would have to be under a load to truly be balanced. Strong Gas Smell
Venturous Randy replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Andy, I am afraid you may not have fixed the problem, you just fixed the symptom. If you had gas that was leaking from the carb and down the outside of the boot and then you tightened the clamp, the gas is now leaking down the inside of the boot and into the engine. This is not good either. You did good in isolating the leak to a particular carb, but you may still need to figure out where the gas is leaking from on that carb. RandyA -

Help,fork seal problems

Ditto on the Scotch tape. It is thinner than electrical tape and seems to be tough enough that the seal does not tear it. RandyA -
My girfriend has a Garmin, I believe, and it retains the top speed. I borrowed it for a couple of days to see if I wanted a GPS on my bike and I believe the top speed indicated when I gave it back to her was 94 mph. Condor, he is asking about the indicated memory that the GPS retains. RandyA

Setting the carbs
Venturous Randy replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Andy, after doing the needle/washer adjustment and new diaphragms on my 83, I have got as good as 49 mpg when running 2-up and running in the 50 mph range. Also, this has been with no loss of power. RandyA -
